this is the free trip to israel for jews from ages 18-26, thinking about signing up for it anyone hear anything about this or have been on the trip?

my buddy and his sister both went this summer, but on separate trips

his sis ended up getting swine flu while she was over there, and had to stay in quarantine in Israel for 2 weeks...

but my buddy had a great time!

just did a little reading up on it and they said they prefer jews who know little about the heritage/religion so works perfect in my case

I live in a town with tons of Jews, majority of them have taken advantage of this opportunity. One of my good friends went this summer, actually left the day before the Gaza offensive, and had an amazing time. I've never heard of anyone having a bad time.

Do it! It's awesome. If you can wait till you are old enough to go, appreciate it all, and extend. But don't stay in Israel. Extend, travel through Europe, fly back to Israel, then go home.

I did that, saved like $2,000 on flights. Spent over 2 months traveling around Israel and Europe.

My GF staffed an Israel Outdoors trip. Said it was super awesome, I feel like NSers would enjoy the outdoor trip more than just the normal one. Tons of hikes and other awesome stuff. Look into it.

Do you have any Jewish relatives? My friend who's dad is Jewish but never celebrated anything Jewish in his life went on birthright with us. You have to at least have a relative that is Jewish I think.

Nah, on the other end of the spectrum. It's all good though. Eventually I'll knock europe off the list but probably not for a couple years. I want to hit some other spots first that happen to be dirt cheap which never hurts.

I was initially thinking of extending and traveling through turkey and the mediterranean region or up into eastern europe, but logistically I don't think I have the money or time considering I'll be working full time in the summer and I only have a small gap between when work ends and when I have to return to school

Same thing exists in France, but it's not even restricted to Jews here, anyone can join.

All you need to do is get in touch with the program, let them know you are interested in discovering their culture, etc. and you can go to Israel on an all expenses paid trip. You have to be under 30 I think.

A friend of mine did it, said it was a great experience.

Is this going to be the only opportunity you have to go on birthright till you hit the age you can't go anymore? Do you have friends goin on the trip with you this year?

If not, wait man. Make time and money to travel around beyond birthright. It will enhance your experience so much more.

Yes it's totally fucked but at least the program encourages American kids go to check out some new shit that might open their eyes a little bit

I wish i could go, I've been trying to convince my girlfriend to go since her mom is jewish but she wants to go travel europe together instead. Maybe i can find a way into the program, i think my great grandmother was jewish

The reason why Jewish people can do this is because super rich Jewish people in Israel sponsor these trips for Americans to go to Israel. Their hope is that they stay, feel more connected to Judaism, or just become pro Israel. Obviously they really want you to stay or move to Israel so that they can bring money into the country.

I don't think its retarded and I don't think everyone does it for an exotic vacation. Yes I am preaching that people who are eligible turn into an exotic vacation, but if that's your goal of the trip, usually when you're done it isn't how the trip played out. It's a great experience for Jewish people and maybe more countries/religions should do it.

Its the same way that israel advertises holy land trips in the bible belt, they need american $$ and support, all expenses paid vacations tend to sway people's minds.

My entire family has been on birthright / studied abroad there / vacation I refuse to go. They always tell me how safe it is , etc. I could care less that its a free trip which is supposedly pretty fun. NOTHING in life is free for one. Food/drinks/going out will cost a fair amount I assume not to mention the time cost of me just leaving work for 10 days.

My whole thing is that why would I voluntarily travel to one of the most dangerous regions of the world. Conflict can just explode there in hours. My sister was there and saw the iron dome rockets firing off. You know what...if Im going to take 10 days off from work I can think of a lot beter places I would rather go then the desert....skiing or one of those sick all inclusive tropical resorts sounds a whole hell of a lot better and free of terrorists.
