Wearing a helmer does it prevent injury or cause more injuries??

Obviously I expect this to generate a lot of responses of people saying "are you kidding dumb ass??"

That is not what Im looking for here! What I want to know is if anyone else who has not grown up riding with a helmet has experienced problems with them killing rotation or causing problems when spotting landings..... or various other issues that result in injuries that would not be caused if a helmet was not being worn.

If you have never ridden with a helmet like myself and switched to wearing a helmet I want to know how it worked out for you! Also I just want to know what the general feeling is about helmets and hopefully get some good support for both sides!

If your helmet is slowing down your rotations or getting in the way of spotting landings, you either suck at life or are wearing it over your eyes. There really is no down side to wearing a helmet unless you think you are steezier without one which is lame. I don't see why those things would have gone through your head...

I think sometimes wearing a helmet gives you a false sense of safety, kind of like a 4 wheel drive SUV in the winter. Helmets cannot prootect everything back, knees... I feel some people put one on and think they can do anything. I support helmets 100% though. I think they should be worn all the time skiing, even if you are taking a cruiser run down something easy.

i get the point of this thread: when i started to wear a helmet i found it a little awkward, limiting the way i could turn my head without it... it took me some time to get used at it, but it's just a short discomfort for a much better feeling of being safe, i can hardly ski without now
really, it takes just a little to feel it cozy, so have just a bit of patience and wear it every time

Yes, I can't set my rotation properly with my helmet on and it stops my rotation mid-spin due to some mechanical aspect of it I don't fully understand.

It is also so bulky and huge that it prevents me from spotting my landing because I can't see around its bulk.

Be careful kids, people are trying to trick you when they say that helmets prevent injury.

I i usually dont wear one on pow days,  i just feel better without it for some reason. But when im doing park it just makes me feel safer

My helmets got a lot of tree scars in it that aren't on my head. I haven't needed it in the park yet but I'm sure I'll bang my head on a rail one day so I usually wear one.

Well mine has saved my head from a couple smashes into the ice. And my friend cracked a helmet, which probably would have been quite the misfortune w/o a helmet. So...I'm gonna keep sportin my helmet.

i know that when you wear a hat that's big and put your helmet over it, its definetly not safe and A LOT OF PEOPLE  do this, so in that sense helmets if not worn properly can be dangerous

wearing a helmet sometime could actually be worse than not wearing one at all, a helmet it made to be worn flush against your head or only with a thin liner, most of us wear hats under out helmets which if worn incorrectly could cause more damage, there should me no "air room" betweeen the helmet and your head, if there if your head could hit the inside of the helmet when you fall which could casue damage just as if you werent wearing a helmet, under that pading in helmets (a lot of people including my self) take out the pading is hard plastic which could casue serious injuries

Helmets make a part in your cerebellum , next to the cognitive area of the brain stem, become over bearing with nerve messages because of the intense weight. This means that because you have a helmet on your brain says you cant get hurt, and that is why helmets are so much more dangerous than a beanie. In fact a beanie actually gives more protection to certain areas of the brain because of the light weight of the cotton on your head(this does not apply to wool), the nerve message is sent to the cerebellum, next to the cognitive area of the brain, and it tells you that your fine; because your not wearing a helmet, and to disregard the large pile of rocks that you are about to smash your skull into.

Just to let all of you kow Im not one of those guys that is out there thinking helmets are lame! I just started skiing before ski helmets were around! I have not swithed because after 19 years of riding without one the thought of wearing a helmet seems restricting! Also when they first came out and even some of them still look like they would limit periphral vision! Some of you may not know how body rotation works or ever need to spot a landing but periphral vision plays a huge part.

This is an accurate point, but we should all still wear helmets and attend avie courses.  A different way of looking at it is given conditions, people with training are less likely to make a mistake and be involved in an avie.  The reason training leads to more avies is that training also leads to people putting themselves in harms way.  If you take two people, one with courses, one without, and put them out in similar conditions,  the one wihtout trainning is more likely to get in a slide.  However, people with training are more likely to go out in the first place, hence the higher numbers.

The last quote is one to really think about.  I cannot stress enough how much I agree with it.  Do not allow a helmet to convince you that you are invincible.

yeah, peripheral vision does help... thats why some GOGGLES arent as nice and could be possibly more hazardous.

one thing i have noticed is when i have a helmet on i hit my head way harder becuase my head cant hold the extra weight up as well as when i dont have one on. there are other times were i know that i needed my helmet and was thankful i had it. it seems to go both ways for me.

That is an unbelievably true fact.  I do not know if I have ever seen a non 4wd SUV/truck that was off the highway in the winter.  It is always people driving jeeps or other large 4wd vehicles that think they can drive fast because they have 4wd.  Hence, more of them loose control.  I always wear a helmet.  I always have and it is not that noticeable.  Helmets are comfortable, warm, safe, and look good.  I see no reason not to wear one.

I guess I could see your point as far as its something new to you. But wearing a helmet does prevent concussions. As far as I know I would like to lessen the chance of getting a concussion cause then my brain could swell up and start bleeding in my skull and then once that starts to happen, well there is not much you can do beside call the funeral home. So yeah helmets might be wearing but, its the safe thing to do.

imo, wearing a helmet while riding is a sign of responsibility cause it reduce the risk of concusion or injuries and it keep your head warm and some companies makes some nice, steezy and light helmets !

I've skiing one time without my helmet... I haven't hit a jump this day.. I don't know why but surely the fact that I didn't have my helmet on my head and I have take a second to check what can going on if I miss my rotation ou whatever...

so for me, Always skiing with my helmet.. but everyone do what they want !
