Where to Ski?

Terry Peak in Deadwood, SD is prolly your best bet. 1,000 vert ft. not a lot but its got all the terrain the big mtns have. just not as much

Hold on now, Terry does not exactly have all the terrain the big mountains do.  At least i think your comparing Terry to skiing in the rookies which are two very differnt things.  I personally have only skied at Terry in the 07-08 season and they had a good park for the size of ski area Terry is, I don't know what it was like last year.  The runs are short and other than very short sections hidden around the hill there is nothing steap to speak of.  I know there are some places in Minnesota that put up some really good parks for being in Minnesota.  There is some of the best backcounty in the states and some good ski areas in Montana too that put up good parks as well, such as  Big sky and Big Mountain, now called Whitefish i believe.  Look into drive times to Montana, Terry, and Minnesota to get some ideas.  Anyway u look at it theres nothing to good for day triping.  Also remember that with the current economy a lot of ski hills will be cutting costs and i know for some that will be cutting back their parks, so if your going somewhere for park be sure you know whats there before you go.

Ben Hur and holy terror get steep. and on a powder day they arent bad.  Next time youre back at terry check out maringo and avalanche.  the glades above millsite have some good stuff too.  Powerline is another good one. not super steep, but it gets pretty technical.  the trees above lil hope have good lines scattered throughout them.  420 bowl.  Definately some runs you should check out. the peak has got some good stuff.  you just have to look.  I have skied the 'rookies'.  for the price i dont terry is bad at all.  Granted the GM is a prick. but what can you do.

I pulled up a trail map to refresh my memory of the areas your talking about.  The glades areas after you drop in on maringo was the area i was thinking of.  I couldn't find powderline on a map.  I don't mean to sould like a jackass but i think were just having some confusion in the use of the term steap.  To me I would not say there is anything steap on terry.  When I say something is steap i think of a slope you look down and think crap I don't know if I can do this and you gotta get yourself to commit and drop in.  Runs such as the Big Couloir at Big Sky Mt.  The chutes and east face at steamboat are pretty steap, if you hike the ridge to the west on coppers back bowl is pretty steap as well.  Runs like Ben Hur and holy terror are steaper than most at Terry and have better fall lines making them more fun to ski.  Nothing really technical either because you don't have mandatory drops or lots of blind slope, tight features, or no fall zones.  I don't know man, like I said I don't mean to sould like some jackass on some high horse but I just think the words we use to describe terrain is different.  Anyway sorry for this somewhat of a rant, props to all dakota nebraska skiers.  Back to the thread title, Terry can be a fun hill for sure.

BTW when did they get that dfd box on their website, that thing looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

pretty sure that just showed up last year.  did you get to terry last year? im not a big park skier but i was impressed.

No I never got to.  I spent last season in Montana and talked about meeting up with a couple friends of mine that board and go to the school of mines but never got it done.  The news that the man that ran the park has left does not sound good.  Lets hope they will atleast keep it as good as it was.

i dont know who ran the park last year.  but i know in years past the guy that runs gets fired/quits a couple times a year.  either way.  timmy (head of grooming and snowmaking)  does a good job of listening to the ppl in the park and building features that they want

Avalanche is pretty steep, on Big Sky terms. I've skied double blacks all over the map and I'd say it's misrepresented on the trail map, especially with all the crap mixed in with the run.

And some of the inner glades are so thick that they are pretty dangerous. I personally hucked a 15 footer at Terry just a day ago, right off a glade run.

He's probably out of school by now.
