Do you really have to wait that long to receive healthcare?

Does Canada use the metric system or inches and Fahrenheit?

What is Canada's economic situation? Like, would you say it is better or worse than America's economy?

I've been wondering these things for awhile

You cant simply directly compare the U.S.'s GDP to directly that of Canada's because Canada is much smaller in population so of course ours will be lower. Canada has 1 tenth the population of the U.S. right there

USA pop.: 305 million
Canada pop.: 33.6 million

33.6 million/ 305 million = .11

USA GDP: 14.1 Trillion
Canada GDP: 1.274 Trillion

1.274/14.1= .09

I take offense when people subtly insult my country with blatantly misleading/wrong facts.

I also take offense when Canadians put up their fantasy world barrier and somehow think their country is superior to the USA

First of all, you're an arrogant prick and you're not as smart as you seem to think you are. Who actually posts shit like this? It's great that you have the internet to entertain you because if you act like this in real life I'd be amazed if there's anyone willing to talk to you for more than 30 seconds. What I'm getting at here is, sweet mother of Christ you're a douchebag.

That being said you're 100% correct on this point. There is no comparison between the Canadian and US economies and GDP is clear evidence of that. It is a different ball game. Lower median household income also doesn't take into account the higher cost of living in areas of high population concentration compared to the US. In every industry up here we are playing beer league while you guys are in the majors, even the high paying ones; I'm in law and BigLaw up here pays pretty well but there's still no comparison. Your dollar gets you more down there, and you have more of them. Quality of living, meanwhile, is a whole other ball game, but that's not what the question was.

Really, the question should've been phrased, has the current economic downturn had a lesser or greater impact on Canada. The answer is that there has been a lesser impact on Canada and the recovery process will likely be smoother and quicker. To use a simple analogy this is largely because our economic pendulum doesn't swing as far out into prosperity as the US's does, so it doesn't go as far the other way, either. That being said it has had a very noticeable effect, particularly on people entering into the job market.

By the way free healthcare is fucking awesome. I, nor anyone I know, has ever had a problem with it. I have never so much as heard a horror story from anyone I am acquainted with. That being said, with any system there are definitely going to BE horror stories, whether it's the US system or the Canadian or the Cuban system or whatever. Harrowing anecdotes don't give a very good picture of what the average person's experience is. I think for me the thing that really sells me on our system is that I do not have to worry. I can go skiing and jump off a cliff knowing that if I fuck up and hurt my knee, it won't cost me tens of thousands of dollars.

Peace of mind is worth everything.

A: YES. I have never had to wait that long but i have never needed somethign major. My boss for example is waiting 3 months for an MRI to see one doctor, then wait another couple months to see another. It's just kinda dumb when peopel have the money and cant get services. Most Canadians believe that no matter who has money they shouldnt ever get better health than the person next to you. We stick to this rule for the most part but there are a few private clinics popping up in major citys that the law kinda ignores.

Q: Does Canada use the metric system or inches and Fahrenheit?
A: For weight/height i always say lbs and feet/inches. Lots of industry still uses your system. But on my drivers license its in metric.

A: Coming from an ECON major, i would say we didnt get hit as hard but we also are a drop in a bucket compared to the American economy. Is it over? The Bank of Canada has said its over, but things dont change over night. It will still be years before we get back to where we were before all of this. Time heels all wounds.

Actually I am one of those top-tax-bracket people who's going to be paying for others' health care my whole life. Don't care though, still love it. What marginal rate are you paying, by the way?

And you're different use of tenses is confusing me."I am" a top bracket tax payer coupled with "who's going to be paying", does that mean you're already in the top tax bracket?

The last remark is nice too, up to your superiority antics once again. I do property management for my parents, though I don't make anything from it except my bills and cost of living, so I guess my labor is being taxed at the highest rate as well. I just secured a year long rental with a nice Canadian family actually, so now that I have less to do I have an interview in a couple of weeks for a security job.

You're right the tenses are mixed up, my salary progression will put me into the top bracket in 3 years, hence I will be in there for the vast majority of my working life (3 years below it, ~30 years in it). Although honestly the increase in marginal rates is only about 7% (highest marginal rate is 39%) and higher income allows access to all sorts of fun little tax planning schemes to defer or drop so I'm actually kind of looking forward to seeing what I can make of it.

No superiority intended, I mean to expose hypocrisy. If you're going to tell someone off for leeching off the system, you'd better not be doing so yourself. Moreover being a knight in shining armor for the high-income earners doesn't make a lot of sense when not all high-income earners want you coming to their rescue. You're living off the 'rents, you aren't contributing anything, and your income taxes in your new job are going to be subsidized by others, so cut out the sneering sarcasm and try expressing yourself like slightly less of a dick. There are times when peoples' stupidity leaves the door open for abruptness but differences of opinion on tax policy are legitimate and do not invite your and ju's jackassitude.

I'd bet even you would be singing a far different tune if your taxes were upwards of 55% combined if not more, as its about to be for us under the great Obama.

If you want to call the legitimate work that I do leeching then you need to get down off your high horse. Its a job that if I didn't do we'd have to pay someone else with far less incentive than I do to get shit done. I'd hardly call securing an over 40 grand deal over the last month "leeching". You're going to be lawyer, so I'd say this is the wrong place for you to comment on "not contributing anything". I'm not an advocate for high-income earners, I've met plenty who are dumb enough to be happy to be working 6 months for the government. I'm against collectivism.

The difference being that our top marginal rate kicks in at around 130k and yours doesn't hit until 7 figures, so that would be why it is higher. Almost no one would be paying that and I am pretty sure that 55 is an inflated number that takes into account things besides income rates, while not factoring in credits. In the real world progressive taxation is far less slanted against the rich than it appears at first blush, because they have the means to use elaborate shelters, even legal ones.

I am not sure what you are saying with the lawyer comment, I guess I'll just assume it was a standard "lawyers suck" snark. Despite what I said just there, everyone who is in the lower income brackets is having their taxes subsidized by the people in the higher brackets and so is leeching to some extent. You are in fact leeching more than most in that technically you're evading taxes in that you're being paid strictly benefits (room, board, shelter) to work for your dad which is legally declarable income, it's just that revenue has an institutional policy of not going after that kind of thing; and they shouldn't, it's perfectly legitimate in our society to do what you're doing. That being said, you aren't paying taxes... I don't know much about tax credits in your area but you're probably not going to be paying much over the foreseeable future, either. Consequently your comment to me earlier was not particularly well advised.

You're welcome to be against collectivism and whether or not that's a straw man is another topic altogether, I'm just saying don't be a cock about it, which both you and ju have been in this thread. Ju particularly; for someone who likes to claim being smart and mature with his undergraduate poli sci classes (way to go, I went through arts, plenty of complete idiots in those programs), he sure sounds like a 15 year old with the "your country sucks" stuff, and you don't really need to fall in line. Garbage like that is a large part of what makes NSG as bad as it is, especially in the summer. If being right on the internet is THIS important to you don't distract people from what you're saying with the 'tude.

When all is said and figured in that figure is not inflated, it hasn't reached that point just yet but its just a matter of time. You have to remember that most states have their own taxes that form a percentage as well, highest in California is currently around 11%, that's why there's such an exodus of money from this state. Plus you have to figure in all local, sales, and property taxes as well.

Actually no, it's not. The natural unemployment rate is higher in the US than Canada. What that means is because the US has a much larger population and produces more, the natural unemployment rate will be higher. Since you can never have a perfect unemployment rate the US is about 3.5% and Canada I am not sure about but I guess around 2.5-3%. That is base level. So in relation to the actual unemployment rate the difference in this makes both countries quite similar. So Canada should always have a percentage point or so lower than the US.

I am agreeing that it was a factor and that yeah it may have been the last factor that broke through to the market. There are a lot more factors that go into it though. That's all I was saying on that.

Again, you can't say that because it hasn't happened yet. Once GDP has positive growth, then the recession is over, I am not sure why you don't get that.

No you don't. Sales and property taxes are on a completely different rubric and are different issues. They're independetly policy driven and property tax is capital gains based and hence indefinitely deferrable. It looks to me like at comparable income levels you're paying somewhat less there than here, which makes sense. If Cali state income tax is 11%, what is the national average?

In any case you'll never be paying the taxes you'd pay up here, you make more money and your cost of living is lower. We manage it with a very high quality of living. The alarmism over the spectre of higher taxes (an issue which no one really understands anyway) looks like parody from here.

waits depend on the severity of symptoms and amount of people in house

walk in clinic waits vary between 20mins-2 hours, i would say average is 30 minutes, you should always go as soon as it opens.
hospital emergency room waits can vary between 30 minutes(rare) and 10+ hours.
surgeries between a few days and a few months, depends on case, what you need, etc.

they often suggest you stay home if you have a cold or flu, unless it's really bad. a lot of waiting rooms get cluttered with annoying old people with the sniffles, or just aches and pains.

my friend got her breasts reduced for free because it gave her sever back pain, my other friend has to get hip replacements every ten years and it's not free because she was born sick. perks vs disappointments.

i've never had to get severe surgery, i've had some things broken and i don't think i was in for too long. i've had ekg's & eeg's done too and i don't think i was there for more than two hours and a few waiting rooms.(brain scans and etc)

we have private dental insurance and a private insurance also issued by my mom's work, so i'm covered 80% if the gov doesn't want to, and if i travel i'm safe for over a million, and i can have whatever done to my teeth sans too much monies. i would have to say it's the best of both worlds. i don't really have any medical complaints about canada.

I was talking about all combined taxes when all is said and done, not just income taxes. Cost of living in Canada might be cheaper than places like the midwest, but there's plenty of places in the U.S. where its just as expensive. I'm sure Manitoba or the Yukon are cheaper to live in than say BC. People that live in places where they earn higher incomes also pay a much higher cost of living.

Average overall state and local tax combined is around 9.7% nationally. California state income tax is not 11% by itself, I was mistaken, but combined with local taxes it is around that.

Just recently i had to go get staples in my head and was waiting in emerge for 3 hours before they got to me, but it didn't cost me a cent.

Metric system kicks ass way easier, you guys need to wake up and embrace the 21st century already your no more important than any other country.

We pay way more tax than you do in the U.S. and our stock markets are suffering a little less than yours but were still in dire straights.

Yeah, sure, but realize that there are 30,000 people in total living in the Yukon. What counts as the midwest, Ohio? 11,000,000 people there. Iowa? 2,900,000 people. Etc. Winnipeg's cost of living is marginally lower than Toronto's from what I hear from people going to school there. People are very much concentrated in the urban centres here. NYC average cost of living might be higher than Vancouver's or Toronto's but there aren't many more cities where you could say that, if any.

I'm no fucking economist. I wrote that half awake and in no seriousness whatsoever. Logic definitely escaped me there. Yeah I made a mistake in the #s and info, I looked it up in maybe 2 minutes and I guess I found the wrong stuff. Big deal. I wouldn't have cared if you just pointed that out, but no, you have to take your attitude of superiority and try to convince everybody that you and your country are the best. You're a hypocrite. You take offense to a misguided post supporting Canada but you post like you need to prove that the USA is the best place ever and is superior to the rest of the world. You represent the American stereotype that most of the world looks down upon and that gives a bad name to the rest of your country.

the fraser institute is a conservative based think tank and they are making the worst out of the situation. frankly, i would rather have my free healthcare and wait, because in really urgent situations you will get helps ASAP. alot of the time, especially in really big cities there are alot more urgent injuries such as car accidents and trauma, and when you have a unseriously broken wrist or arm, as long as its not a compound fracture you wil be seen. people are seen in order of the injury and severity not in order of when you came in. so if you came in with an infected sliver or something, you would be seen after all ther others because yours is not life threatening.

also, we learn both metric and imperial systems in school (like how to convert and such). metric makes way more sense, but when i asked my stepdad about it (we were building doors), he said that inches are better for things like that but i dont know really...

as for the economy i heard yesterday that the econmy is on its way up and will hopefully be over soon.
