Do you really have to wait that long to receive healthcare?

Does Canada use the metric system or inches and Fahrenheit?

What is Canada's economic situation? Like, would you say it is better or worse than America's economy?

I've been wondering these things for awhile

Healthcare, it's not bad. Could be a lot quicker but at least it's free.

Metric, like every other country except the US pretty much.

Economy. USA debt of $8,000,000,000,000 (8 trillion) more or less, Canadian debt of $690,000,000,000 (7 billion). Ours is doing better than yours. Our recession was nothing compared to yours it seemed.

Do you really have to wait that long to receive healthcare? No, When i got knee surgury i had to wait 2 days to get an mri and then a week to get surgury. 

Does Canada use the metric system or inches and Fahrenheit? Do you seriously not know what YOUR OWN system is called?

What is Canada's economic situation? Like, would you say it is better or worse than America's economy? We don't give away houses, so better.

Do you really have to wait that long to receive healthcare? I waited 3 hours in an empty hospital to get seen for broken ribs. Generally it works, even when you go to Emerg you have to wait, it really depends on  where you are. In a more rural area it's less, in let's say Toronto, you have to wait a LOT longer.

Does Canada use the metric system or inches and Fahrenheit? We use the metric system, it is quite easy.

What is Canada's economic situation? Like, would you say it is better or worse than America's economy? It is about 10 times better than the American economy, our banks have always been fiscally conservative, the BoC(Bank of Canada) says that the recession is already over.

i actually have never had, or heard of anyone having any problems with the health care personally. ive been in the emerg for pnuemonia and treated within an hour, broken colar bone treated within an hour.


a lot of people use imperial here, but nationally we are suposed to use metric i guess...

and canadas economy is very closly linked with the states, so tourism is quite a bit down, as well as the auto industry and many others. but i dont think we had quite the same problem with mortgages.

Do you really have to wait that long to receive healthcare? yes, but not with like emergency stuff. they won't be like "you broke your leg? sweet come back in 2 weeks"

i read in business week i think that canada did the best job of managing/ avoiding damage pretty much anyone affected by the economy (north/south america, europe etc..)

but honeslty we don't wait that long for most surgeries but i have heard of waiting for a year, we use metric sysytem for everything but personal height and weight, and the recession didnt hit us that hard

Okay, guys stop talking about economics. A recession cannot "said" to be over. It either IS over or it is NOT over. They are predicting it will end this quarter, however that could be wrong. A recession is just two periods of shrinking. The recession in Canada is NOT over. Canada may be a tiny bit better off and I am talking tiny bit because Canadian unemployment is damn near what the US is. These are lagging factors though and if you look at the stock market which is a primary indicator you will see that growth is expected in both countries.

I really pity everyone that thinks banks lending to the wrong people caused a recession of the magnitude we are seeing. It contributed, but there are several other underlying factors.

They did a good job of keeping a safe financial sector. However circumstances are a lot different than from problems the US is facing and what the EU currently faces.

Longest I ever had to wait was two hours at a super busy walk in clinic just outside downtown toronto, I only had a sore throat though.

I cut my head open once and didn't have to wait at all. Same when I broke my finger.

Bump for a quality thread. I'm interested to get the Canadian perspective. Conservatives love saying that most Canadians hate their health care system, to help them in stopping the health care bill trying to be passed now.

Health care: only been to the hospital a couple times and its never been to bad

All packaging and anything important is metric, and in school everything is metric, but people still would say i way 100 pounds, and sometimes you would say small measurements in inches.

Economy: Im only 14 so I dont have much to say about it

dont know about healthcare

yes we use the metric system, the US is the only country that uses the imperial system. britain sometimes uses farenheit thought i think.

the recession is not half as bad up here, but its still affecting a lot of people. the biggest problem i've seen is people getting laid off, and lack of available jobs.

thats a double edge swored though...because in cases where, for example, someone would need cancer treatment, they could easily be $500,000.00 in debt after numerous treatments. This would feed money into the medicare, however people with colds, minor injuries, etc. would be less inclined to waste hundreds to thousands of dollars for something that isnt as serious.

personally i would rather keep the system we have now.

i walked to the clinic, walked out in an hour and a half with a cast on and all x ray'd up

didnt pay a thing

we use metric and celsius
but since you dumbasses decided to use imperial, which makes no friggin sense, we use it sometimes too
i.e. people still refer to their weight in pounds, height in inches, distance in feet usually
but we'll always use kilometer instead of mile, metre instead of yard, etc

I fucking hate it when people with minor problems like a small stomach ache or head ache go see a doctor. Especially when there is a shortage of doctors. I like the health care system in Canada but some people abuse it.

true enough,  its just very recent so it was on my mind

besides that, ive had to see several neurologists (sp?) for epilepsy and things like that
and ive had EEG's, cat scans, the whole shebang

never waited more than a week or two to see one of em
its just been pretty good i guess

the only bad experience i had was wehn i had to go to sick kids in toronto for blood work
and had to wait like 7 hours just for them to draw one syringe of blood
but its a really busy hospital sadly

Our health care system definetly needs some work, its getting worse but there are plans set up for the future. My mother very involved with several hospital in montreal and she claims that theres just not enough room in our hospitals.

where i live i've had friends wait upwards of 3 hours to get broken bones dealt with, thankfully my mom is a doctor so whenever i get hurt my mom just takes me through the ambulance entrance ahaha.

Healthcare is decent, if you seriously need something you will get it fast (and free).

We usualy use the metric system but everyone knows their height in feet/inches and their weight in pounds, and alot of people don't know it in cms and kgs. Also in construction we use inches

Our ecenomy is doing much better than yours unless you are just complaining abotu a small recesssion.

Im not canadian but i visited toronto 2 weeks ago for the indycar race, and it looked like they were in much better shape economically than the US. Tons of buildings being built. only problem was the garbage collector strike.


I cant speak for the healthcare lines, but here is a study that was done on them. Doesn't look pretty. the study is very long.

Ya there are head hunters sent all over Canada to recruit doctors to the US, and they offer incentives such as moving their family for free, free cars, pay bonuses and better facilities to work at.

i was just at hood and in general i found that Americans have no knowledge of anything outside their own countries. Being one of the only Canadians i was getting so incredibly frustrated with some of the questions being asked but I'm just speaking in general. Although these questions are not too stupid

1. i wouldnt know, ive never injured myself majorly and had to wait but i know some people who have had to and havnt

2. metric!

3. um i would say it isnt as bad, but i know alot of local stores (includ mine) are laying off part timers and cracking down.

A recession can absolutely be said to be over. The BoC is one of the best respected Financial institutions in Canada, and some would argue North America. They have some of the brightest economists working for them. I am going to go with them on that one. It is called negative growth, not shrinking. Canadian unemployment per capita is less, go look it up. We are better off because we do not give houses away for the simple fact that poor people don't know how to manage money..cause they're poor.

The subprime crisis DID have a major hand in the recession. Securitized mortgages, particularily subprime basically brought Bear Stearns down. It created a tsunami if you will of uncertainty in the financial sector, this along with the associated liquidity crisis. AIG for example was selling insurance on subprime mortgages without adequate capital to support losses. So in effect it was a house of cards, there was also a large concern that there would be a run on the banks. The Fed got involved to shore up the balance sheets and offer cash infusions to the most susceptible lending institutions to keep them alive. The recession was symptomatic of a lack of consumer confidence, as a direct result of the financial crisis(Consumers quit spending...manufacturers lost customers I.E. consumers and the economy shrank by 6 percent.) The manufacturing sector was hit hard, that lost a lot of jobs.

The subprime crisis and the Liquidity crisis were in effect the catalyst which started the recession.

There have been cases where people have had to wit ridiculous ammounts of time but thats in huge citys like toronto in my small city think we got like 17 000 people i've never had to wait more then 30min...  ive herd of people driving from calgary (an hour away) to use our hospital cause they might end up waiting 2-3hours in calgary to get looked at so it can be bad..If you come in on an ambulance and its that sirious, you dont have to wait at all tho obviously... but hey our health care is free

well said my dad still normally uses inchs and on the construction site I work at all the older guys use inchs

I have not felt the effects of the economy one bit some of my friends had trouble getting summer jobs but not me... I got my summer job back working construction and I noticed that a shit load of people I had worked with the summer before had been layed off and I meen like 70% or more thats the biggest thing I noticed but it was mostly people that were well paid and not really very important, and my parents are in the tourist industry one of the industries probly most effected by the recession for canada and i geuss its been a little slow.. ...I dono we defenetly got hit at least 10 times less worse then the states hasn't really effected me personaly at all.

the health care is wicked here, the waiting times aren't bad for most things ... in grade 11 my waiting list for heart surgery was like 2 weeks and my dad only had to wait 1 month to get a hip replacement ... all free!!!!

Debt matters obviously, but not when comparing economies as solitary means. The reason for this is because debt is already counted in GDP, the way a country is measured in a recession. So essentially if we were to say that the US has a higher debt that would be double counting the debt, thus including a number that has already been accounted for. Obviously debt is bad, but because we do so much more trading and have a larger scale economy than Canada, it is only presumable that we would have larger debt...

I can't believe you don't understand this. A recession is either over or it's not. It's NOT over YET. You are basically saying if two teams are playing a sport and they are winning the predicted outcome is essentially the already defined truth. Stop with this argument it's not even worth furthering.

Shrinking is exactly what I mean in negative growth. Same thing stop trying to pull my words apart.

Canadian unemployment is less, wow very good as I said. I said it was close to ours. Which Canadian unemployment is currently around 8.5-8.7% and American is about 9.6%.

As I said, it was a factor but the financial industry has more complications than you could ever perceive. Again I don't feel like writing my reports over again but just trust me when I say there is a lot to be talked about when the financial sector makes up such a large portion of the country.

A whole damn percentage point is quite a lot of people. If you know economics as well as you say you do, you realize how large a percentage point is.

As I stated before, the liquidity crisis and the subprime crisis were the straw that broke the camel's back. After that happened it was just a shitstorm of uncertainty. I do realize there are lots of factors, but IMHO those are the two issues which kicked off this recession.

If you want me to be not so flippyfloppy. The recession in Canada, IS OVER!

Your economic condition might be relatively slightly more healthy than ours... but even when were in the worst recession since the great depression our GDP is still greater than 14.1 trillion dollars. Yours is 1.274 trillion! bahahaha 1.274 trillion, thats like how much California produces!

Our national debt is 11.4 trillion not 8. Good thing our GDP is greater.

Your GDP is 1.274 trillion and your debt is 805billion USD

So your natioinal debt is only 63% of your GDP while ours is 80% but still, when you post absolute numbers you skew the data and that is irresponsible. Its not like our countries have the same production and your debt is 800 billion and ours is 11 trillion...

A recession is defined as 2 consecutive quarters or more where GDP falls. Your last quarter your GDP FELL 5.4% and the previous quarter it fell 6.1%%. Thus, you're still in a recession bud. And you're gonna be in one for a while as you don't make up 5.4% in one quarter.

I'm a 3rd year college student who goes to a better school than you can think to.

I am majoring in Finance and have completed my minor in Political Science.


If you want to take population into account, then here are our per capita GDPs:

USA: 46,859
Canada: 36,444
