Food Inc. SEE IT!

I've had some experience in the industry, and right now I'm in grad school working on a food science degree.  Most of it is widely available information though, or just common sense.  Go look through the code of federal regulations, section 21 and you will be surprised how many aspects of food are regulated.  If one company, your monsantos, krafts, hormels... can make the best, cheapest product - shouldn't they be allowed too.

Yes the food industry will never be 100% safe unless you want to pay $100 for a head of lettuce, it's just to big.  So there are always going to be outbreaks of salmonella, e coli, etc; but most companies that are responsible for a big contamination episode end up bankrupt or hugely unpopular.  So it's in a companies best interest to do everything possible to maintain safe food.

I think you should watch this documentary, It seems that your just being naive about the subject or you infact are a lobbyist for the food industry.

The things that get me are the cows fed corn, or the fact that my burger could be from 1000 different cows. Plus the way chickens are bred, everything about that is disgusting.  Steriods for cows, chickens and pigs to make them grow bigger faster.  Scientifically formulated food to make them lay endless eggs. 

Then the vegetables that are shipped 4000 miles to a processing plant, then 4000 miles to sell.  I grew tomatoes this summer and regular fruit goes bad in like a week, not 3 months.

Your just accepting that this is probably just another movie saying why the government is shit and everyones gonna die.  But not everything is complete bullshit.  So pull that tiny little head o urs outta ur ass and start voting democrat.

And it shouldnt be in the companies "best interest" It should be straight illegal to sell shit with disease and the company should be shut down, this is food I dont wanna see mistakes

I have watched part, never made it though the whole thing; and if you take it as it's told the issue is scary...but that would be the naive thing to do.  Try thinking big picture.

If it concerns you to have a burger made from one cow, find a local butcher and buy ground beef from him.  Same goes for chickens, eggs, etc.  You have that option.

Studies on steroids have been extensive, and I'll admit I'm no expert but the majority of what I've read is that if anything residue is left in the meat it is either negligible or destroyed in cooking.  Hormones are the bigger concern but studies show similar similar results and many (dairy farmers at least) are finding them less cost effective and moving away from them.  Of course the food is going to be formulated for maximum production, that just makes sense.

If you don't like the idea of processing so that food can be shipped long distances I'm sure you won't mind not having produce for 9 months of the year.

Also it is illegal to produce contaminated food, however the fine usually doesn't matter compared to the public response.  That is a great thing about the food industry for consumers, because everything that happens becomes such a public event, no company wants the bad publicity.

I'm not lobbying for our food industry, I just think movies like this don't do a good job of portraying the reality of the situation. 

The government has no real regulatory control over the safety of our beef supply. The gov cant force them to due any thing they dont want to.

If monsantos product is best then why do they have to have all there washington lackys shoot down any bill that would make them be more accountable for there product. Basically instead of saying Americans are too dumb to decide if GMO are safe that they should actually show some proof. That and they get laws passed so that they can OWN seeds and can force farmers to buy them.

Actually USDA inspectors overview the entire operation and will shut the line down if they aren't happy with something.  No roll beef is not graded for marbeling but must adhere to the same safety standards.  When you realize that plants may be randomly inspected by federal, state, and sometimes local authorities inspections are not too infrequent.  Sure there could be more but it's all out of the taxpayers (your) pocket.

I'm not sure what your referring to with the milk.  You may have steroids confused with hormones, in which case see above, but human and bovine milk composition is substantially differential.

Also not sure what you're getting at here but GMOs bring up a whole different topic.  The Monsanto seed issue is that they produce a sterile seed so farmers have to repurchase every year.  A monopoly? Maybe due to the barriers to entry but I think that's in court now.   The fact is it has become more cost effective for the farmers to purchase monsantos seeds every year rather than their normal seeds every 3-4 years... Again a better product at a better price - and it's up to the farmer what to buy.

Your corruption theory could have some truth but is really just speculation you can make about any industry anywhere.

As for ammonia I think you are referring to BPI, a company that removes protein from true excess beef trimmings and then uses an ammonia injection to sanitize the meat.  Unfortunatelly the process is far from optimized yet but the school lunch program still purchases it... That is where the controversy comes from.  Less an example of the food industry failing and more an example of the government not being able to run a successful program.

 This help you at all mr speedy or are you still going to buy into everything a movie tells you.  Sure there are problems in the food industry but this movie is only giving you their slanted view.
