Walla Walla

So I recently applied for a job in Seattle, and today a branch office in Walla Walla called to offer me a position.  Being right out of college, I was kind of banking on being in a legit city where it's easy to meet people and there's plenty of stuff to do.  I've never been to Walla Walla or know anyone who has... is there anything there other than a couple colleges and tasty onions?  And proximity to legit skiing?

went there to look at whitman college....i think. And walla walla is a small town, not much to do like there is in a city.

I'm considering Whitman too.

How good is Bluewood?

Is the closest good skiing Crystal Mt.?

Where is the good skiing around there?

Bluewood is and hour and fifteen minutes away. Honestly, it's shit. Lifts are slow, most of the employees are useless assholes, they've actually closed the mountain due to too much snowfall. (16" overnight)

But if you do decide to move here I can hook you up with some grade A bud...  ;-) haha

Also, MAD. Who do you know that taught at Bluewood?

haha to get to crystal youd have to go all the way around rainier to enumclaw and go back east on 410 since chinook pass is closed in the winter. the first two that come to mind tho are hood or mission ridge (i really have no clue)

Actually I live in Dayton, WA which is 30 minutes away from Walla Walla and only 21 miles from Bluewood. Bluewood isn't what you would call prime skiing but for the short distance you have to travel compared to others it isn't that bad. The runs are short and they don't have a speed chair only a normal 3 seater, but it still only takes 15 min. to get to the top. There are some pretty legit runs there you just have to look and in reference to what someone posted before i haven't ever heard them closed because of 16'' of fresh. They had to delay opening once because we kept getting some massive dumps couple years ago and groomers couldn't see in the blizzard. I'm not saying Bluewood is the most legit place ever I'm just saying for being as small as it is it's not to shabby.
There is also Mount Spokane, 49 North, about 2-3 1/2 hours away that are pretty good hills.

Big_Spence exaggerated a little bit.  Here is the low down on bluewood.  It's owned by an old man who doesn't care for it anymore, so it gets worse every year.  The trees aren't getting cut out any more, the terrain park decline every year, and so on.  But on the bright side the last 2 years they have gotten over 300 inches of snow.  It's not steep and is only about 1000 vertical feet but you can find freshies all day in the trees, and some people say it has the best tree skiing in washington.  Also there is a hiking spot called "vintner's ridge"  where you can get great pow, the wind blows it in.  It's about an hour from Walla Walla, everywhere else is about 4 hours (Hood, White Pass, Snowqualmie, Spokane area resorts)

As for Walla Walla there isn't much to do here.  We have a summer rail setup at Spence's house that is pretty sick.  There is a skate bowl, a skate park, a bmx track, and a nice downtown.  We usually have to find fun in our own houses, but longboarding can be fun around the area too.

Also they did close this year due to too much snow.  It was 26" overnight though, and they couldn't clear the roads.  I have gotten two days in the past two years with over 2 feet of new though, no exaggeration.

Everything has been said pretty much. Walla Walla is really small and has very little to do. Great town to longboard in because most of the roads are smooth (if you know where to go) and you can go pretty much across town in 15 minutes. All other mountains to go skiing besides bluewood is a good 4+ hours. Weather is rather good except there is rarely over an inch of snow on the ground during the winter and most of the days are fogy. It dose not get amazingly hot or cold like some places but the fall and winter seasons are long and very nice.

I just had to comment in this thread. Born and raised in walla walla. I love it. But if your a city kid your gonna hate it. I'm goin to school in tahoe now and i can say that even though bluewood sucks ass due to the management of it, im going to wind up back in walla walla sooner or later. oh yeah, im buying bluewood once i scrape up the money so it should be in tip top shape in about five years.

Keep in mind this is old men who are saying it.  When you know the resort and ski it a lot you can get fresh powder all day.  Not the steepest trees, or longest.  But you can get freshies all day long through the trees, which old men love.

Just stating the local's opinions man.

 IMO Bluewood does have great tree skiing though.  I've skied mission, white pass, and stevens.  I like them all, and they definitely have better steeps and terrain.  But I've skied Bluewood all my life, and really enjoy some of the tree runs I've found over the years.

then those people need to get on over to echo valley ski area. the number one resort in the state of washington for tree skiing.

Bluewood is pretty much an east-coast sized hill, with west coast sized snowfall (over 500 inches each of the past two years).
