Letting go of your dreams, once you realize they are out of reach.

Growing up I always wanted to work in the media, making Ads for TV, mags, web, creating cool things.
I have spent years working on my dream. I started my journey early in H.S and went on to college and got a degree. I held a ton of internships and even volunteered at places to gain more experience. You think all of that would have helped me along my path, but sadly it has not. I have been out of school since May 08 and I have yet to get a job that works with media.
     I always thought all my internships would help me out, so wouldn't all the experience I gained from them and the references from the people I worked with. But after applying for jobs for over a year and half and having 5 interviews and no follow ups. I realized internships don't mean shit. You are just some chump that works for free, or for a credit.
       About a month ago I realized that my goals and dreams are out of reach, what I have worked so hard for is now something of the past. And now I work as a lift maintenance man for a resort.
  
 Its nice to dream when your young, but once you hit a certain age you find out life doesn't always go your way, and you need to let go of those dreams to make it in life.

It's just bad timing man. Don't give up yet. Jobs aren't exactly abundant right now, especially in graphic design. The economy is down, which means sales are down, which means advertising revenue is down, which not as much creative/graphic design work out there. Patience & try and stay positive.

man u gotta look at the times right now

the employment scheme of things right now is horrible. Don't stress it man.

you got the degree/you got the credential.

something will fall into place. You aren't going to be working at a resort you're whole life.  don't trip, someone will eventually need hire.

only thing you got to do is veer away from everything you just posted. Why would u wanna just say fuck it? esp. after all that work put into it

I guess this is what separates the people who actually achieve their dreams and the ones who don't. Who can stand up to disappointment and trial and still fight for what they want. Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself 100% fuck what everyone else has to say. Look at what some of the greatest minds/athletes/entertainers ect. have gone though. What seperates the good ones from the great is a willingness to push forward no matter what is thrown at them, to beleive in themselves when no one else would and fight for what they wanted. You will never achive anything by giving up.

Exactly. Don't ever give up man, you'll get your job, it won't be as soon as you'd like obviously but as long as you keep trying you WILL get it. It's depressing having to wait and not getting it right away but you obviously have the experience and surely the talent to succeed in doing it so just stick with it.

You've worked so hard up until now for it, it's worth working hard and having patience for a bit longer in order to enjoy the benefits of all of your hard work once you land a job.

man too many people i know come out of school and figure because they have their degree all the dream job companies are going to fight eachother to hire them and give them 6 figure salaries.

take your time, keep doing what your doing, and when the timing is right you will get your job. just cause your settling right now dosnt mean you have to settle for the rest of your life.

just dont give up or your never going to get it.

what do you mean creating ads? like ad copywriter? or the person who actually designs the ad that the ad copywriter made?

cuz my brother is an ad copywriter. He graduated from Univ. of Delaware, went on to grad school at the VCU Brandcenter

He intered at Crispin, Porter, and Bogufski last summer, now (graduated) hes in LA "interning" for 72 and Sunny. Hes getting job offers left and right from ad agencies. there are plenty of opportunities out there, trust me. hes litterally has 4 different agencies that want him

my old man has a masters in civil and mechanical engineering and his MBA. He headed projects for disarming weapons of mass destruction in Russia, developed the wing pattern/design for the Boeing 747, did consulting for the reconstruction of iraq, and now does business consulting for major companies involved in that area. He has been fired twice in the last year, strictly because the economy cant support so many workers. In my opinion, he is extremely qualified and still the times are fucking his shit up.
