I usually start with lyrics and add them to a song, and the song builds from there, slowly evolving during the process. Or if you have a really good tune, you can throw in meaningless lyrics and then try and develop the lyrics. Id go for the first way though, usually comes out better.

Not doing too great with your band, huh?
You can't think of a name or lyrics?

I make beats and use samples and have been coming up with lyrics for it. What I do is like what Nipe said, you have to approach it with a theme or a point you want to make. If you made the instrumentals for the song first, think about how it makes you feel. Just relax, what comes to your mind when you hear the song? Start writing. Write whats on your mind.
But the best way is to just start writing first and the song will work from there. It all begins with one simple vision. Just take it one step at a time

^ that's how my band does it. i'm writing lyrics right now by the piano. See how it feels, what type of mood, and just start writing. But make the music first and add lyrics..i wrote freehand lyrics, about 13 full songs...and i haven't been able to add beats..it just doesn't work out too often, so start with the song, and then just start writing..take hints from bands you like with your 'style', watch what they do. improvise.

The 10 Commandments can in fact be narrowed down to only two:
1) Thou shalt be honest and truthfull to the one who gives you nookie
2) Thou shalt not kill unless the invisible god you worship is different than the invisible god they worship

I always have get my chords down, and then play around w/ progressions and then just overlay lyrics that i come up with as i go along to some theme I'm working with. I usually come up w/ licks after I have all those bases covered.

I normally download Lisa Loeb songs and Amy Grant songs and steal the lyrics from them. Like, I'll take a couple verses from one of Lisa's and mix it with, like say, a chorus from Amy's. Normally turns out great.

Why I do is try to establish a definite rythym or rhyme and then layer something on top. You have a riff or a tune, listen to it, what is the tone, of the song, can you associate any colors with that tune? Its really cool when you begin to write hit a topic and then wake up to see a page written before you.
Just write what you feel, don't falsify your work to fit with someone elses structure. And there are better things to write about then Teen Angst, use things like alliteration, metaphors and similes, it creates a deeper more meaningfull verse. Trust me this poop and puppy love craps is going to end soon.

If making coherent songs is your problem, i try to start every song with a theme, even if the end result is that none of the song really relates to theme. So even if no one knows what you're really singing about, you'll be singing about the same thing the whole way through. And don't be afraid to change a few words to fit lyrics to a song. You'll probably have to do this a few times if you're writing lyrics before music.
