Well, the consensus seems to be against having this argument... although I think it's all the 'creation' people backing out because they know they have no solid evidence... ;)

hahaha I got a lecture from a strict creationist in history because we wanted to look at both sides. He only said that 'God put it in the bible, so it is true' (which has a lot of things wrong with it) and 'Scientist have been wrong in the past'....

I believe in intelligent design, that god created us but more by starting the big bang and guiding evolution. But ya what ever.

yeah we evolved, but god was responsible for the creation of all life. i dont think god wants us to go to a stuffy church and couch up $$ to pay for some sex scandal cover up tho.

ok... my feelings are more toward the evolutionary side... but i dunno everything has to come from somewhere... but i dont believe in a god, a being... i believe that there is some greater force out there... not like a god or a being, just like an energy.
The main thing that keeps me from the god thing is that it all seems ridiculous to me... the strict ritualistic practices of all our earthly religions... the uncompromising beliefs... I dont get religion basically... Im one of those people that needs to form their own opinion on everything... And if everything has to be created, who created god?... Traditional relgion just seems to me like people trying to explain the things that they cant really explain... My philosophy is to not to take a completely firm stance in explaining things which i do not truly hold the answers to... but basically I believe in evolution but i do believe that there is some greater force out there, just not a god or creature or whatever... just some sort of energy

God(s) were invented because thousands years ago humans didn't have the science or technology to understand why the way things were. Some kid probably asked his dad 'why is the sky blue?' and since he had know way of understanding how light breaks through the atmosphere, he invented some sort of all powerful being that makes everything the way it is. Or, in places like eqypt...it would appear that gods were created to frighten people into believing if they didn't follow the rules of society, they would be banished to an afterlife of pain and suffering. That's why the pharoah was considered a god, so people would fear and respect him.
I believe that gods have served their purpose in this world, they helped to shape society's, create morals and kept order within communities. Now a days though...it seems religion is causing more problems then it solves (ie. al queda, ireland, sexually frustrated priests).
As for the creationism and evolutionart thoeries, creationism as the bible explains it, is only believable if you decide that dinosaur bones don't exist.

Right on man, religion was in the beginning, primarily a way to explain things that humans couldn't understand. Later on, people started catching on that it was a great system of control. It's my belief that it's all keyed into our trained belief that we are inferior to something else- it's this massive inferiority complex that the entire species has. We all have to believe that something is better than us, that we are DIRECTED by a higher power who makes the decisions; we believe this because we are too afraid to make the decisions ourselves, too scared to take the responsibility of living our own lives according to morals and values that we judge for ourselves.

Holy Shit, i love these philisophical threads! First of all, i agree with our Quebecois female friend, before you can evolve you have to be created. IT GOES BOTH WAYS!!! Secondly, organized religion isn't bullshit, there are just people who make it that way.

This is just my opinion, but religion has only brought us war, if you think about it, almost every war was caused by religion, If there is a god why must there be so much violence, with the amount of violence out there it is really hard for me to believe there is a god. The world will only be in peace when everyone settles there difference about there faith and all come together. Im probably going to make a few people mad by right this but i need to get it out

'you have to be created before you can evolve'
created? like..some all powerful dude who lives in the clouds waved a magic wand and *poof* we have a paramecium? Nah....that just isn't believable.
To comprehend evolution...you have to think big. Like 2 billion years big. Homo-erectus, or humans as we know them have only existed on earth for 80,000 years (or if you read the bible...7000 years). That is a very MINUT spec in time. That's like giving a millionaire a penny. It took 1,920,000 years for us to develop as such. If you look back 3.5 million years at at 'lucy' (she was an australapithicus afarensis), she is considered to be the oldest, nearly intact, upright walking human ancestor ever discovered. To go from this 'walking ape' to a walking human took 3420000 million years.
See the problem that people have is that they can't look at a single celled organism like a paramecium and don't see anything at all that could make us related. But, when you think about it, humans are made up of billions of cells that are constructed in nearly the same fashion. Like cells in all other animal life, we have a cell membrane (semi permiable), nucleus, mitocondria etc. Food and water is converted to energy the same way by nearly all animals in the animal kingdom. All plants also have the same way of converting energy (exception of decomposers). I also just can't believe that if everything evolved seperatly, that it's a coincedence that everything has a dna signature with the same double helix construction, made up of adenine and guanine combinations thiamine and cytosine combinations.
I find it funny that bible thumpers have a huge problem with thinking they are related to apes...when in actuality, we're related to everything from apes to the lowly paramecium.
Now...back to 'what created us'. I believe that given the nessesary means for life (water, minerals) it's not impossible that over, mmmm, lets say 500 million years, something will grow.

Jibs that was so true, to many people over look science, personally i would love to belive there is a god and an after life, but the more i look at it the more i realize how science proves so much.

Are you refering back to who created the universe and everything in it?
weeeelll.....that's out of my league..i'm mostly just down with evolution of earth and whatever...but if i had to guess.....i'd say it's just always been there...eternity. Hurts the brain to think about eternity like that..but it also hurts to figure out who created god if he exists.
I think humans need another couple million years of evolution to be able to wrap our minds around that one..

As you can see Im new to this site, but im quite taken away with the positive responce you guys give out, no mater what side of the argument you are on. I belive you have to be created inorder to eveolve, therefore I guess I sit in the middle ground round here, although I dont think creation happened the way it says in the bible, after all GEnisis was written over 200 years ago, we know much more today, and evolution is a big part of that modern knowlege, its a practical and fasinating concept which provides better or more advanced reasoning for the existance of orginisim, that we see around us to day, as well as those which bare similarities to us which existed in the past.

i know this might sound like a cop out but what is so weird about a collection of carbon and other atoms randomly coming together at some point in the past and producing a self replicating organic molecule? i know it is a million to one chance but it hasn't happened anywhere else that we know of so we could be the million to one

I look at it this way:
The odds of me winning the lottery are about 6 million to 1
Now, how do those odds change if i have a billion years to play?

jibs... everyone is on your side that we evolved.... I think the only question is eternity or creation at some point (i.e. the creation of a 'giant mass of matter' that started the big bang)

Not everyone agrees here. I beleive there is way too much going on for life on this planet to be a fluke, I don't beleive that everything just happened to work out.
1- the gases in the atmosphere are perfect for life. Nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, etc in the right amounts
2- the distance from the sun. any more and we would freeze, any less and we would burn
3- the axis of rotation. four seasons. ideal for plant life.
4-our sun. out of all the stars out there we got one that wasn't a super giant or a dwarf star. not too hot, not too cold.
5- water. earth has an abundance of water, unlike other planets that have none
There is way too much going on for life to be here by mistake. I'm not telling u all to become christian or anyithing, but simply deffending religion. I'm not defending people in the past that screwed up and created war based on religion. And about the all powerful science. There is soooo much that hasn't been explained. Wow, we all know that everything is made of cells. There is just way too much going on for life to be a coincidence.

Intelligent design isn't all mythological, it actually has alot of scientific proof, i forget what some of it is but it's fairly convincing. But there is so much more for us to learn before we can really answer this question.

well here goes....
1) there is no exact amount of each gas that we need to live. All we need is oxygen and all plants need is carbondioxide.
2) the distance from the sun doesn't even affect the seasons. The energy from the sun is travelling through space so it looses very little energy as it travels. We are closest to the sun in January. and then we are 3 million miles further away in June... but it's hotter in June. but planets that are extremely distant a) don't have an atmophere b) are so far away that the suns energy has deminished.
3) plants don't need to exist in a climate with 4 seasons, hence the rainforest.
4) there are trillions of stars..... I'm sure there are more planets and suns like ours.
5)We have water because we have an atmosphere.. relating back to #1.
I may be coming of as a pushy... but I just don't like to see misrepresented ideas... they lead to bad assumptions.

exactly, and about the plants, who says our plants didn't evolve to suit a planet with four seasons? all we know are plants that live on planet with four seasons. perhaps if Earth only had 2 seasons we would say that that is perfect for plant life because that was all we knew?
