So i've lived in Jackson my whole life, maybe this is just my preception of things, but no one in the ski industry gives a shit about Jackson riders. We have an abundance of them as well even though we might not all be park skiers. Its strange because it is a big place for snowboarding largely because of Travis Rice. But, being 4 hours north of SLC it really makes no fucking sense to me.
Nothing compares to JH. Totally unique. Makes/Demands that you're a better skier. Greatest place on Earth. I had 4 spring breaks in college, all of them were spent in JH skiing.
what, are you stupid? being from jackson hole, i'm sure you are aware of a little ski movie company called Teton Gravity Research... they're kind of a big deal.
and well, no... i won't continue, maybe you just need to check your ego at the door and realize, that yes, Jackson Hole is sick, but no, it is not the center of the universe. What, do you want the world to bow down before you? you're just one mountain in a world of mountains.
yea, it was 4am and i was really drunk when i wrote that... but i still stand by it, but i guess not as mean like.
So, everyone knows about Jackson Hole and what it offers, internationally, the gnar that has happened there, the fact that a pro film company that is also known internationally came from there, and has footage from Jackson Hole every year... what more exactly do you want? The Olympics?
Maybe Jackson keeps it that way. maybe its what makes Jackson, Jackson. Its more low key as far as huge events. I mean really, imagine there houndreds of thousands of people there skiing, taking all your fresh pow, making all that traffic, making it hard to get back to town from the mountain. Maybe Jackson is Jackson cause it does not have all that hollywood hype there.
I know what the OP means. For a sick mountain with arguably the most important film company in skiing, I am surprised there are not more big name skiers from their. Micah Black was the guy for a long time, but he is not on the film scene anymore. Most of the top big mountain people live in Whistler, Utah, or Tahoe.
When you really think about it, there is not very much heli opportunity for big mountain pros. Only a few companies go to AK, and they do not have very many slots in those helicopters.
I would think Jackson would have at least one guy who got major heli time with TGR and MSP. Dylan Hood is from Jackson, but I don't think he gets much AK heli time.
One of the draws of Utah over Jackson and Tahoe is the real estate prices. One can buy a house in Salt Lake for far less than either of those places. And the mountains are sick there too.
I dont know why, the only video worthy footage they got was in the park. At least that was the case in Slamina. The AVERAGE skiier at JH rips harder than the bc movie in their flick. That being said the 4bi9 dudes kill it in the park.
Jackson is so stacked with insane talent. 2 years ago in the town downhill ex olympian tommy moe got third place.
To the OP I've always thought of Jackson as a skiing mecca but then again I've never skied out side of Montana or Wyoming. I've also always wondered why Snow King doesnt build a banger park since obviously they cant compete with the gnar of the village.
sorry... i didnt realize that herniks tricks were "average" for jackson skiers... I'm not sure if you noticed... but the banger trick in the movie was a sw 12 by henrik... in the jackson backcountry... not to mention an ill switch 9 and stomped 180 by henrik as well. All which seems to be "video worthy." There were some big lines shreded in Jackson this year by Tim, Witt and Dave... buy "So Far So Hood" to see for yourself..
haha well that'll happen when its your first trip up there. im still not sure why you fucking care so much about riders in jackson and how much exposure they have... just ski. thats what they're seeming to be doing. who cares if they got energy drink stickers on their helmets. this is a really dumb thread.
JACKSON IS FOR RICH PEOPLE. good skiers tend to not be rich. who can actually afford a 700 dollars for rent and a 1900 dollar ski pass with out working 60 hours a week?
I like everyone else in this thread am unsure of what else you want to happen at jackson.....i would be super stoked that is so sick and is super low key if i were you, not pissed that you dont have a walmart at the base of the hill or whatever you are trying to get happen there......
Seth Morrison lives in Frisco, CO. That place is very high price also. Colby, Simon and a few others live in Summit Cove, CO. (both towns are in Summit County, CO). They all can afford to live there. The prices in Jackson are the very same in Summit County. I know, I use to live in both places and will be moving back to Jackson soon. The only thing cheaper in Summit is the ski pass unless you want to ski Vail and Beaver Creek, then your pass is the some cost as Jackson (about the same)
There are more good skiers ripping Jackson than AltaBird! I also know lots of people here who don't work 60 hours a week, and I currently pay $300/month. There are lots of ways to get a pass for less than $1,900.
Jackson is my favorite mountain ever. I've only been once for the 4bi9 trip for Slamina. And I do admit your average Jackson local shreds... maybe not park because there isn't a huge park scene, but the steep and cliff scene there is absurd.
I bet if you went to TGR forums you'd have way more Jackson Hole hype. And I feel like their is way more hype around park skiing, so places with dope parks get more exposure here. People that shred outside the park don't seem to be as scene as park skiers. Like, you don't see 10 threads a day saying "selling SAGE's goggles that he gave me at CAMP!!!!" or "WANTED: The North Face Jacket like the one Sage wears".
The thread isn't about how good the mountain or park is, or where people are skiing, it's about Jackson Hole being "the black hole of the ski industry".
My response was meant to indicate that Jackson Hole is still recognized by skiers, and even more so, not just by TGR or MSP (people known for big mountain skiing) but 4bi9, obviously we are known for park/urban stuff. Jackson sponsors our movies and lets us ride there.
The whole point you tried to make wasn't even related to my response, really.
Every mountain out there has people who absolutely rip, but aren't noticed in the ski industry. Even SLC has a ton of kids kill it, but aren't recognized. I guarantee there are also plenty of kids in the PNW, California, Whistler Blackomb, and the East Coast who aren't getting recognized. Maybe Jackson has a higher population of them? I don't know. Get use to it.
appaaaaarently (and this is coming from my gf, so take it with a grain of salt) but supposedly if you buy one of those full price like 2000 dollar vail passes it's acually a lifetime pass
You don't understand at all what that person was talking about. Skiing abilities, as in being able to ski a gnarly line with style. Henrik can spin, sure, but can he ski sick backcountry lines? Stomp big cliffs? Ski spine lines? The list goes on, and I hope you get the point.
i hear you in that there are a lot of big mountain rippers in jackson hole who are incredible. but being park skiers and wanting/trying to be good in the bc is no reason to hate. theres a lot of respect for the skiers there which is just another reason why theres a trip there every year.
this has nothing to do with the thread, just some of my footage from the past winter in jackson. hopefully i didn't mess up the embed code...
jackson athletes are doing big things, just not in ways that always
show up on NS. i mean, the list is ridiculous. erik roner on nitro
circus, lynsey dyer getting crazy coverage (freeskier cover), crystal
wright winning the 09 freeski world tour, jess mcmillan winning the
world tour in past years, shro in TGR movies, etc etc. and obviously
the snowboarders, travis rice is travis rice and bryan iguchi is a
legend.
jackson will continue to support some of the standout am/pro-am companies like
4bi9 and stept because they're all groups of kids who have changed
their lives to ski every single day they can get out on the snow.
whether you're pro already or still unknown, all these people know how to market themselves. it doesn't matter if you're from jackson or the midwest or pennsylvania. you gotta love what you do and keep doing it regardless of who's watching or wanting to pay you. that shit comes later. it isn't about the
industry caring about you, it's YOU making the industry care. period.
this is the answer to this thread completely. places where kids get the most hype = mountains near cities for cheaper rent, or colleges. plain and simple jackson don't really fit into that equation.
i don't know why you're complaining about it, i wish i lived in a smaller ski town as opposed to a city.
i dont agree with you at all. theres so many good skiers that have loaded parents to fund their skiing. think about all the people that go to ski academies. those cost just as much as most out of state tuition at college does. i think there is definitely a good percentage of high quality skiers that get funded from their mommies. if you work all day everyday you dont have time to get good unless you are just naturally amazing at progressing
Dont get me wrong i love jackson. the only reason i am leaving is to go to college, and not having the hype of the ski industry is really nice as well.
As far as tgr, they are not concerned with any talent from jackson, and who know arguably maybe there is not, but i have grown up with some incredibly talented skiers, some never wanted to pursue it, but it still surpises me there is not really one pro from jackson.
Looking back, i kinda came off as bitching about the way jackson is in this thread. Thats not really my intention at all, i dont want it to change, and you guys are right there definitely is talented skiers everywhere... just havent seen any from jackson in the spot light for a couple of years
Sounds a lot like Whistler/Blackcomb. The amount of talent ripping around here is ridiculous, only the odd one or two athletes seem to be able to stick it out long enough to surface ontop and actually make a career out of skiing. For shits and giggles my room-mates last season wanted to see how much vert they could drop in a day each, they ended up bagging 600+ ft each, on a super casual day in april, to week old corn. At any big mtn comp odds are the top skiers are from whis, or at least thats the trend from the past 2 years that i've been competing. There's always someone gnarlier, than you here, or someone faster, or with bigger balls, you're never best and always pushing to be better.
It's a lot easier to suceed coming from a small resort where you may very well be that token "ripper" that they use in add campains, or win all your small local comps. You get a lot more exposure and its big fish little pond, as opposed to big fish in a fucking ocean full of sharks.
Wow, your right. Here at my 500 foot hill, Im one of the best skiiers. But If I went, with my current set of skills, to whistler or jackson, I would be just another average rider
This. If tons of sponsers tried to go there and pick up kids tons of people would wnat to move to jackson. and like he siad, No more fresh pow, traffic, lift lines.
Well, if it helps, I am putting Jackson Hole in a very prominent position in my next novel. The working title is The Devil Within. jh has long been the enclave of investment bankers and lawyers who do not care for the bright lights of the Hollywood crowd in Aspen or the rich politicos in Vail. Before it got too pricey for the average shlo mo rider, it was THE place and will always be THE place for me, when I can afford it.
Work for the mountain, and your pass is free. Many businesses in and around town have a deal with the mtn to make it $1,300. An Alta pass is $1,000. An AltaBird pass is around $1,500. Whistler is around $1,600.
Jackson does, however, need to bring back the locals weekday pass!!!
i dunno man, who can u name. people move here, we go lynsey, shroder, and dylan hangs out here which is cool. Sage is from targhee/alta area. Micah for sure but he's from way back, who can you name?
