Flying with skis

so its gonna cost 175$ each way to fly with skis on united air.  anyone know anyway to reduce this?  I think I might just buy skis when I get there and fly home with them and save 175$

United is ridic with their fees. I ended up switching airlines because of that. I dont think theres really anyway to reduce the fee. Rent while you're out there? Sucks but not sure what else you can do

tell them its for medicinal purpose and tell that your skiboots are anklebraces, your skipoles are crotches and your skis ar for spalting your broken leg...

perhaps fly a different airline? i know when i flew out to Utah is was $40 extra for a suitcase backpack and ski bag. I flew Northwest also.

I changed mine to southwest and didnt have to pay a dime AND my bag weighed more than their limit. They still took it, gave me a smile and sent me on my way. Stoked.

yeah. air canada lets you take ski bag, boot bag, your luggage. and 2 carry ons, all for free.

I flew NWA (now Delta, so I'm not sure if the policy changed) this past season and they allow you to check a ski bag and a boot bag as a single item, for $15. However, depending on the bag checker the definition of a boot bag varies. On the flight out they counted my giant duffel bag with boots in it as a "boot bag" but on the flight home I had to pay for two checked bags ($15 + $25) since it was more than just a pair of boots.

I know Frontier has pretty agreeable ski checking policies too, so definitely shop for a different airline. $175 is ridiculous.

yeah 175 is a shit load either ship them, or bitch and moan to customer service and threaten to never fly american again and that you want to cancel your trip. they usually will help you if you get into it like that

I was able to get by with just paying 15 to check my skis with united. I stuffed clothes in the ski bag and carried my boots and a large backpack filled with clothes as a carryon

i don't think you can avoid the ski bag cost, but a good way to avoid the other bag charges is this:

buy a wheelie snowboard bag.  use all your clothing (snowpants, coats, etc) to wrap around your skis.  This is great extra padding too, since baggage handlers are most likely going to toss your gear around a lot.  Pack a bigger carry on with some street clothes and then carry on your boots.  That way you only have your skis checked and a carry on.
