- lets be real here- for the same price you can get mirage nano-0stats which are smaller- better acoustics- and a tad bit cheaper- and you can upgrade ur shit.

Bose is terrible. they're awful. they're disgusting. the VAST majority of all things Bose are a waste of your money. take that same amount of money and buy JBL.

if you want a truly quality speaker system that offers consistent sound reproduction over all frequencies, you won't bother looking at Bose, period.

Nobody fucking gets it. Bose speakers are pieces of shit for the price you pay for them. They use plastic pieces where most companies use metal or synthetic pieces too.

one reason among many. Bose speakers are TERRIBLE for accurately reproducing mid-range frequencies and make up for that with booming bass (which seems impressive to the average person) and piercing high frequencies.

notice that Bose is NEVER sold next to any other sound equipment. it's either found in a brand store or in it's own section if it's in a large retailer. Bose literally won't allow their products to be sold next to any competitor. wonder why? easy- compare a Bose system to a JBL system of the same price and you'll hear why within seconds. even, clear sound reproduction across all frequencies with dedicated mid-range speakers that don't get muddled up by the bass frequencies. not to mention the difference in construction... my parents have a "high-end" Bose system and every single piece is plastic. i have a high-end JBL system and every single speaker is wood... furthermore, i have two 3' tall towers containing two 8" woofers each, a 3" mid, and a really nice tweeter and two smaller speakers with the mid-range and tweeter for surround. my dad recently visited and had previously been very critical of me putting the money into the system... now he's planning to buy one.

only the foolish and uninformed buy Bose.

I was saying that it's nice to hear what better-than-average speakers can produce, considering most of my listening is done via a $70 Logitech 2.1 system.

I am not going to pretend that I can argue about speaker systems that cost 5-500k, I would look foolish if I did. That, or I could spend 5 minutes on google and pretend that I know something.

haha here goes: bose, like budweiser, is a product everyone recognizes. Both are seen, unfortunately, as benchmarks for there respective industry by a large majority of the american public. Or, from another angle, both are mass produced products, okay quality, but no substance or character. Bud is a bit better than natty light, just as bose is a bit better than what you can buy at k-mart. Hope that makes sense...

i am so glad at least a few people in here know their shit. bose is seriously a piece of shit. what jbl's do you have by the way, from the sounds of it the e90's or the es90's. if so i have the same stuff. got it all hooked up to a rotel 1069 prepro and a rotel rmb 1075. looking to add a 15" rythmik ds1500 sub soon and then eventually upgrade the speakers to b&w 804's.

and also to the people that say they have 7.1, thats cool and all but really not necessary yet since i have never even seen a dvd or blu ray that puts out 7.1, so if you like have 4 of the same back channels go for it, until then i will spend the extra money from amps and speakers for the rears and dump it into a nice sub or a better prepro.

here is my setup by the way, plus two rear channels. and no its not my parents i bought all of it with my own money, some through ebay or just waiting for deals at my local dealer on stuff.

well I see the bose really sparked off some debate- since were posting sound equipment ill post mine now- here we go- note- I found all the pics on google- I dont own a camera now- I will post pics up tonite with my phone hopefully-

for my front left and right we've got 2 martin logan sources

for the center Im rockin a martin logan feature

for my surrounds I have 4 martin logan vignettes

for my subwoofer 2 of the almighty REL t1's - with continous crossovers so it extremely efficent

ThaTS Wow, those setups are making me think a little.

I am going to have to do some hefty research to have a bad ass audio setup like that in the future.

How far could I go, in terms of quality and reasonable price, by making a home theater pc? I know I can put together a decent computer, that could have a blu ray drive, a decent video card for HD output, and a good soundcard, but what else would I need? Would I need an amp if I have a soundcard throwing the channels out?

thats a nice setup for sure man. martin logans are nice for sure. i would really try to get into separates though since those logans are really power hungry being stats and all. i think if you work at magnolia you should try to get a mac prepro and amp combo, that would be sick as hell. nice work on the setup tho for sure.

all my stuff i got at around 50% off. prepro was 1k, down from 2, amp got on ebay for about 50%, speakers at 50%. so everything retail would be about 4 together, so im slowly working up so i know what you mean with that stuff hahah, expensive hobby for sure.

you would want a soundcard that could output in either hdmi- fiber optic- or digital coaxial to get a full srround sound- they sell them for like 75 bucks

you would need as said above a sound card that could do hdmi audio which would be the best since hdmi can carry the new high def audio formats like dts master hd, and true hd (you would need a receiver that could decode these formats though so be careful). if not then get one with at least an optical or digital coaxial output so you can still utilize dts and dolby digital 5.1 formats.

then to put it to your speakers you are going to need either a pre amp hooked to a power amp or an all in one reciever that will decode and amplify the signal to your speakers.

for speakers i would go with a good set of tower speakers for the front since they will put out the best bass and midbass compared to smaller bookshelf speakers. then for the rears just start with something small since the rear channels rarely output much anyway. you can always upgrade those later, but i would spend the most money on a really nice center channel and front towers for movies and 2 channel stereo for music.

as far as a sub i prefer the sound of sealed subs but most out on the market are ported, and i think they have a tendency to sound boomy or muddy so i am going to make my own enclosure based slightly off of plans from the rythmik audio site. i have been researching subs for a bit and these seem to have a pretty good bang for you buck so that is the next thing im going to get. basically though any sub will work to start with as again you can always upgrade later.

just make sure you get a good sound card and a good video card otherwise it will be pretty pointless and you could save money and just use a separate blu ray player or something for cheaper.
