if you are talking "most recognized rock song" kind of greatest then it would have to be something like stairway to heaven, like a rolling stone, imagine. a song that really has stood the test of time and people can still enjoy it. something that has a simple melody, catchy lyrics, and good musical accompaniment to back it up.


but if you are talking more "best instrumental talent" or "best jam" greatest rock song i'd say in my own opinion it would be something by led zepp/van halen/rush. first of all you cannot beat robert plants voice with jimmy page on guitar (arguably one of the greatest ever) and john bonham bangin on drums...that shit is GOLD! second van halen has some of the most recognizable guitar riffs (eruption for one) and an amazing drum sequence at the beginning of hot for teacher, pair that with some of the most recognizable vocals, david lee roth (hagar sucks), and it's magical. last but not least rush...some of you may disagree but thing about how much they can do with 3 guys. take tom sawyer for one, incredible beginning even though it's simple, throw in some nice vocals from geddy and it's money. neil peart also is considered to be one of the best drummers, i mean look at the frickin set that guy plays.

idk you guys may not agree but just my opinion.

If you know anything about guitar or drums you would never list Page or Bonham in the top ten. Also, so many better singers than Plant. Ever heard of Jeff Buckley? David Ruffin?

Page can't solo or improvise to save his life compared to the real greats.

two of my favorites:


I really like master of puppets and i think it could be considered one of the "best" because its really written about something important and it rocks HARD. metallica sucks now though. new CD has 1 dece song though. I like lots of rock besides metal, but stop saying aerosmith has created anything good.

Technique and expertise aren't always necessary for greatness.  Gene Krupa is a better drummer than Neil Peart, who is a better drummer than Keith Moon, who is better than John Bonham, etc., but Bonham is heavier than the rest, and IMHO Moon is the most fun to listen to.  Craft is important, but so is the final product.

Definitely disagree with this. Bonham is a beast. He may not have the greatest technique but he can throw down some crazy solos that actually tell a story. He also had great chops for a "rock drummer."

Tons better than bonham. Also much heavier. Buddy Miles was a much heavier drummer. Ginger Baker was just as heavy. Sunshine? huge drums, plus technical skill that made him one of the top 5 jazz drummers of all time. Mike Shrieve - just as heavy, also played jazz and latin percussion in circles around his standard kit that Bonham could never match. Nick Mason live at Pompeii? Watch the movie and tell me he's not heavier, more influential, and much earlier. Eddy Bayers, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones? All three higher or highest in technical skill and influence.

C'mon. Soooooooo many more influential, earlier, and better drummers than Bonham.

Honestly, I was just throwing together a list of more recognizable figures to prove a point, but I still think Bonham was the heaviest of the short list.  Not the best, but still one of my favorites.
