I just had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine
She competes in freestyle skiing and is very good. She goes to an academy over the winter instead of school to practice and what not. she used to have to go up to sugar bush EVERY weekend which is like a 5 hour drive

so basically, her life is skiing. now heres the thing
she said something about skier friends and i said "well im a skier" and she said i wasnt. i was just someone who skis.

her arguement was that because my life doesnt actively revolve around skiing, i am not really a skier, im just someone who enjoys skiing (first of all the just doesnt make sense...).

but here's my counter argument.
1. If i had the money, i would absolutely have a ski house and go up every weekend to ski
2. I would ski competitively if i could, but my parents never got me into it (like they sign you up for soccer when your little) because we never really had the chance...
3. i am basing part of my college decision on location. right now, i would love to go to colorado college. d3 lacrosse, great school, and GREAT SKIING
4. i spend hours on NS and backcountry.com and other sites looking at skking related shit and researching and what not.

so althought i dont actually ski nearly as much as her (she would be active), i care probably almost as much about skiing as she does. infact i know people who compete that care less about skiing than i do.
what do you guys think?

i go to CC and if you are really a skier you will most likely quit the lax team there after freshman year to ski. There is no way to do both and spend enough time on school to justify the 40,000 bones a year your parents will be paying for you to go there... i did that exact thing

fuck man. ive skied since i was three, so 11 years now..... ive never entered a comp but im a skier.... i dont go 5 hours to ski, i go 45 min, but im a skier..... if you love it your a skier in my opinion

I fully agree with this one right here. I know I would be insulted if somebody told me I was not a true skier just because I don't get out as much as they might. But yeah, its all said right here. Skiing is skiing and people who put in time to go out and ski are skiers. Just enjoy it and don't let others put you down.

agreed, most people probably wouldn't say i'm a skier either, I've only been like 5 times but I love it more than most people would belive but its pretty normal here

i consider someone who gets up at 5:30 and drives 3 hours to ski in a sheet of ice a skiier. more so than someone who lives in park city. and i think i would be skiing alot more if i was rich enough to go to a ski academy

You cant judge based on where people live, i've done it both ways, lived 15 mins from the hill and i've lived 2 hours from the hill, one just means getting up earlier its not that I like it more when im further away

someone who loves skiing as a passion. You dont have to be super good nor do you have to go to a school that revolves around skiing. If you love skiing as much as the majority of this site, then yes YOU are a skier.

I see where she is coming from, but she has no right to tell you what you are. Here is an example of myself and how she labels what people are. I am a skier. I play lacrosse, but it is my hobby, not my main sport. So I would consider myself a person who plays lacrosse rather than a lacrosse player. But I definitely am a skier, not a person who simply skis. Not question about that one. Anyone that regularly comes onto NS is a skier.

Oh and sorry to double post, but here are my thoughts:

Last winter, I didn't get many days in at all, I learned next to nothing, and I got pretty badly injured. And yet I came to love skiing more than I ever have, and this winter I am going to make the park my bitch or die trying. It's not about how many competitions you've won, how much better you are than everyone, where you ski, what you ski, who you ski with, or any of that. It's about how much you love the sport and the culture of skiing, and how much you would give for it, how dedicated you are. And people can judge your level of commitment to skiing, but in the end, only you know for sure how much of a skier you truly are. If your love for the sport and your commitment to it are sufficient, you'll find yourself skiing as much as you can, which you probably do.

So in short, you should tell your friend that with all due respect, she sounds extremely arrogant, elitist, and rude, and should understand that being a skier isn't about how much money your parents carelessly throw at you, or how much better you are than the other people that you know. And if she were a real skier, she would know that.

Well, if you read the original post, his friend says he is a person who skis, not a skier because his life supposively does not revolve around skiing, but she is a skier because she goes to an academy and everything is skiing to her. I play lacrosse, but my life does not revolve around lacrosse like ti does around skiing. Lacrosse is my hobby, I am a person who plays lacrosse. Skiing is my life, I am a skier.

I hear what you're saying, and I also see where that broad was coming from.....

In both cases, it just boils down to semantics; hyperbolic, meaningless semantics at that.

There is no definitive "criteria" in terms of being able to self-identify as a skier, other than whether you actually strap skis on to your feet at some point. It's totally subjective, and ultimately only determinable by the person themselves. A kid who only clocks 15 days a season but drools all over each and every vid posted on NS, is every bit "a skier" as the kid that logs 100.

If it's a passion, if you make some sacrifices to pursue it, and you consider yourself "a Skier",...you're a skier in my book.

This whole argument just sort of sounds like some lame "I'm more core than you" argument with a different haircut—a shitty one at that. Like a mullet.

its an interesting idea. i dont feel like an asshole saying that there are plenty of people out there who ski or have skied but dont "get it." people who ski 3 days a year and go in for hot chocolate when its below 30 degrees. people who are incredibly stoked for snow in the fall but cant wait for summer by the end of february. theres a skiing obsession that some people understand and others dont. skiing for me is a connection to a million things- nature, mental peace, other people, etc. there are people who cant call themselves true skiers by my standards.

at the same time i have every reason to believe you are, along with 99% of the people who are motivated enough to participate in a skiing forum.
