Are you really a skier?

I just had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine
She competes in freestyle skiing and is very good. She goes to an academy over the winter instead of school to practice and what not. she used to have to go up to sugar bush EVERY weekend which is like a 5 hour drive

so basically, her life is skiing. now heres the thing
she said something about skier friends and i said "well im a skier" and she said i wasnt. i was just someone who skis.

her arguement was that because my life doesnt actively revolve around skiing, i am not really a skier, im just someone who enjoys skiing (first of all the just doesnt make sense...).

but here's my counter argument.
1. If i had the money, i would absolutely have a ski house and go up every weekend to ski
2. I would ski competitively if i could, but my parents never got me into it (like they sign you up for soccer when your little) because we never really had the chance...
3. i am basing part of my college decision on location. right now, i would love to go to colorado college. d3 lacrosse, great school, and GREAT SKIING
4. i spend hours on NS and backcountry.com and other sites looking at skking related shit and researching and what not.

so althought i dont actually ski nearly as much as her (she would be active), i care probably almost as much about skiing as she does. infact i know people who compete that care less about skiing than i do.
what do you guys think?

no offense but thats kind of a bitchy thing of her to say. what place is she in to say youre not a true skier? anyone who loves skiing is a true skier. gaper, backcountry shredder, rail rat. anyone who loves it.

I made a thread abOut this because i felt it would be interesting to show other skiers. i found it interesting and thought others might want to see it. if you don't care, or don't want to see if, you dont have to. you can go back to trying to get that stick out of your ass

and looking a websites like bc.com has a lot to do with skiing. im not buying shit necessarily. im doing research. learning about different skis, different products. I work at a ski shop im my town as well. your the one whos a fucking idiot...

you don't have to be throwing off-axis 9's and 10's or double flips to be a skier, theres a whole lot more about skiing then skiing itself.....

I think she was just bragging about her opportunity. tell her she is lucky but shouldnt blow people off like you because there are some people just like you that are probably better at skiing them her.

the fuck is she talking about?  i am a skier. i have been a skier for 13 fucking years and i am going to be a skier in the next 13 fucking years. just because i cant make a career out of it i am not a skier? bullshit. so if i make music, music that people like and will listen too, but because i have another means of income i am not a "musician"?

and you play lacrosse. mad props. i play d3 too... to bad it isnt as competitive as some of the d2 schools :(

but if you ski and you love it well then i guess that makes you a skier

I'd consider you a skier, but your counter argument is kinda weak.

For instance, if I had the money, I would absolutely buy a parachute and go BASE jumping every day. I would also have BASE jumped competitively if my parents had gotten me into it. Perhaps I also spend hours watching BASE jumping videos and researching parachutes. But that doesn't make me a BASE jumper.

You're a skier because you ski, not because you would ski more if you had the opportunity.

dude shes confused about the subject. Reference me if you want-  a kid who lives in Breck in the winter season and works in golf in the off season a CAREER. I work in my career so I can ski, but my profession is a GOLF. Shes is simply ignorant. I am 25 years old and I know am a skier. I work constantly with people who are not. In college people said they were " skiers" but they were not. You could tell this if you were a "skier."

I would say she is a confused and ignorant "competitive skier" and you are a "pasionate skier." Both of you are both SKIERS. So shes not an idiot, shes just lil ignorant and sheltered in her own skiing world.

is her parents didnt have the money to send her to a ski academy, she would be in the same place as you are. would she say that she is still a skier then? yes, she would, because she loves the sport.

all i have to say is thank god you spend tireless hours researching ski stuff..that definitely makes you a 'skier'...if you are a skier, then you know you are without having to justify it to anyone, and it doesn't matter what anyone else does or says...

well I drove up to mount snow every weekend slept in my car most of those days, but I think I'm a skier as much as anyone else on this site.

well, even then it depends on the situation.

the only time i ever get to ski is on certain weekends because i have class everyday, and live too far from  most mountains to go daily or midweek.

i dont get to go as often as i'd like, but i still consider myself a skier. i've been doing it for 16 years and i still really enjoy my limited time on the slopes. I am by no means a hardcore skier or anything like that, but i still do it, so i'm a skier.

Does your life revolve around driving?  People driving cars are called drivers, but I'm sure most of their lives don't revolve around driving.  If you buy a house you are a home owner, does your life revolve around that purchase, it might, it affects you life, just as driving and skiing do.  Tell her to just shut the fuck up.
