Convincing parents to build jib.

Yeah well since I live in Ky, and I dont get to ski everyday I want to build a jib at least. Thing is my parents say no. Any of you have advice on how to convince them?

I kept asking my parents and they kept saying no.  One day my friend and I went out to clean foreclosed homes and there were tons of mint 2x4s and plywood.  We threw the wood in the truck and dumped it in the driveway, started building and my parents were just like, ah fuck it, if you want to build it, go for it.  Now I have a backyard jib, it's cool, but I would never put a dime into it.

I only spent money on PVC for the rails, but I will use the rails at my friend's cabin so it work out perfectly.

I don't have an idea how big your yard is, but I don't have a big yard like most Easterners.  Yeah, just put it where your parents are not constantly looking at it.  I cut the Bermuda (invasive grass) and put the jib on top of that and the tower is on the side of the year so they aren't looking that and I am helping to kill unwanted grass.  Your parents will be too lazy to take it to the dump or have you break it down, works perfectly.  Like I said, don't buy anything, it is in no way worth it.  I would never buy the wood/turf.  I got it all for free.

Dad's perspective: 

My kids aren't old enough yet, but I would be totally stoked to build them a backyard jib.  Granted I may not be typical, but the reasons I would do it may help you to convince your folks.

1) Already mentioned but problem solving.  Building a backyard setup is an awesome learning experience. 

2) Also already mentioned, but I would much rather have my kids out in the backyard working on k-feds than sitting in front of a PS3. 

3) Yes, they could get hurt, but at least they'd be close to the house, instead of out trying to earn a segment on Jackass or immortality as a Darwin Award recipient.

4) Assuming that my kids are into skiing and have their own equipment, building a jib is nothing compared to the cost of other summer sports.  If your parents are motivated by dollars and they say "no"; tell them that's OK, because you really want to take up competitive horse back riding instead.  That should do it. 

5) Entertainment- It'll give me something to watch when the cable goes out.  No really, I look forward to video taping my kids' jib sessions in the back yard.

6) Body and air awareness.  All the stuff that you guys are doing, actually help prevent serious injuries.  Yes you may get banged up and break some bones, but you will also learn how to fall.  This gives you a better chance of avoiding neck and back injuries. 

7) Drugs - I'm not going to lay an anti drug sermon on you, but most parents would probably choose to have your passion directed elsewhere.    Rails instead of tubes works for me. 

There's probably more, and if any of you still can't convince your folks, PM me.  I will gladly intervene for a small consulting fee.

i convinced my parents to let me build a summer setup by saying i would make it easily movable so it wouldnt be in the way. figure out a way to easily move it around and your parents might now care. mine just didnt want some huge thing in their yard all the time

that only works if you have a friend that will lie for you and say you were with them when it happens and you also need a nice and convenient body hiding spot that the police and neighbors wont find

That would be "rails instead of rails", but yes, I'd rather have my kids jibbing than doing drugs in general.  No sermon, just a parent thing.

How about both. Blow a line, get energized, slay backyard rail, smoke weed, nap time. They won't ever bother you again because they'll be so hyped up to jib and then they'll get sleepy and pass out. Winning combo for all.

If you have (or a friend) has access to a vehicle, one afternoon just buy the lumber and PVC and start all building.  Effort wise saying "no" is easy.  Stopping you from physically hammering in nails, and taking the thing apart, requires a lot more effort and time.  And like most parents, they have neither.

that's what my mom always said about me having a trampoline..no no and no if i wasn't leaving in a month for utah i would just go buy one instead of asking...she's not going to say no once its already assembled in the yard

You're not 9 years old, and immature, (I hope)  So I don't see why the hell you can't go ahead and do it.  Usually if your like, hey.  I am going to do this thing with my own money and time, than they won't give a shit.  Just stick it to the man, and be like; Yo mom.  I'm building this shit.

Nope, but you must be 9 years old because if I spent $500,000+ on a home and invested lots of time into the yard, I wouldn't want a big chunk of wood like that on my nice lawn either.  You have to understand why the parents are being debbie downers.

beg them endlessley for a Xbox 360 or a PS3, then  they will realize that time is better spent outside, on your new jib that costs 300X less

Dear Mom,

PVC Rails and carpet or turf ramps will not hurt your son's skis anymore than loading them up in a ski rack.
