wow just plain wow.
'Bush held us together during 9/11'
'Bush helped the economy'
'Bush is very intelligent'
'The War on Terror is a good thing.'
All baseless statements.
If any one person held us together during 9/11 it would have to be Rudy Guliani. George did his part, but its truly senseless to attribute the togetherness of our nation to one man, especially Bush.
Bush helped the economy eh? (I can feel SUpilot licking his chops right now) As I recall Clinton left us with a federal budget SURPLUS and lower unemployment rates than, ironically, Bush Sr. Bush's tax cut to the RICH killed our surplus as the gov't was forced to dish out more money than we brought in with taxes. Thereby, hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost and the stock market fell 2000 points (Dow Jones). Granted, in the past few quarter's we've been on an upswing. But once again, as JD pointed out the mindless hordes attribute this to the wrong person - Bush. It is the epitome of ignorance to attribute the turnaround of an economy to one man.
Bush is not a brilliant man. But he is not a dumb monkey like some of make him out to be. His years at Yale were spent getting drunk and getting 'lower than average' grades. Ah, a dedicated student. His cabinet is an even more all star playlist we got Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft. The Chicken Hawks. Now I'm not saying theres something wrong with conservatism - b/c theres not, but there is a huge problem with narrowmindedness. When a President and his cabinet plan and carry out a war on loose intelligence and old dreams theres a problem. As Paul O'Neil pointed out a memo about a 'Post Iraq War Budget Memo' circulated back BEFORE September 11 you know theres a big problem.
The War on Terror is a good thing? Yes. BUT not like Bush's plan. Should we keep terror out of our nation - yes, unquestionably so. However, is it our duty to police the world and make war on Iraq because they are an 'imminent' threat? No not at all. Fact is, this war is based on loose intelligence, there was no real garuntee we'd find anything. And we haven't yet. And I won't be surprised if we do. But look at it this way if it took us this long to find any sort of weapons then his program must not have been big enough to make a war over.
Fact is there are alot of terrorist factions out there, and many leaders could sick his army on them and squash them. But what does that show? Might? Whoop de doo. Just because we ambiguously lead up to a war with Iraq and squash that terrorist threat, doesn't say much more than we've got a powerful army. The North Koreans openly stated that they are making nuclear weapons, and they are right next door to two of our hugest trading partners China and Japan. The Houto and Tootsui wage war and genocide on each other, yet we don't go off and make war there.
The fruits of this war are obvious - another democracy, a new trade partner, a democratic base in a tumultuous region. But you know squashing any dictator reaps benefits. This war was rushed, uncalculated, and we are stuck in a seemingly hapless position.
PS - props to DL member JD for layin it down.
