How to get a Park?

Really, parks bring in lots of money. Make sure you have some stuff for beginners, because otherwise it will be useless and all the big shit will get owned.

I'm probably going to have to focus on small hits, I've only ever seen 3 pairs of twins, but there is lots of boarders (95% of them suck)

Its a great idea, but unless you know how to work a Bombardier Park Builder, im pretty sure its going to be tough to build those feature by yourself. Your going to need to amass a Terrain Park Crew first, the hill most likely wouldn't accept your proposal unless you had a crew anyways. I'm all for it though man, you've got a great idea. Keep it going and you should be fine. They may want to test you or validate your skills of some sort because a sketchy park can make for liability reasons too, so be prepared. Rock on man.

I set up a proposal for our ski hill. This is what i wrote to them....

I am Ryan Flett and I am an avid skier up at Whitewater. Just the other day you released the plans for the hill over the next 25 years. I was moderately pleased with the ideas. One thing that struck me that was not there was plans for a terrain park. This baffles me. A terrain park would be a great addition to Whitewater for many different reasons.
Over the last few years my friends and I have going out into the backcountry to build jumps and are capable with dealing with situations that arise. Avalanche danger, rocks in landings, poor jumping spots and other important observations. We have been noticing that more and more younger kids are heading out also with very little skill or knowledge about the terrain that they are in and totally surrounded by. The reason they are headed out there is to build jumps. I know this as a fact. They are going to get hurt because they do not have the experience or the air sense that a park would allow kids to improve on. My friends and I go out to build jumps all the time with the knowledge about the dangers of skiing out of bounds, but this year alone we have had 4 injuries between us, because out there the stakes are much higher. Imagine what might happen with younger kids. A park would keep kids in bounds and away from danger.

Another thing is that we get bored at the mountain. Yes, we do get great snow most of the year but there are those times where all we do is ski the same runs for weeks on end. It would add much enjoyment to our ski season and bring tourists all the way up to the last weekend. A park would attract so many more people, especially kids, to come to Whitewater. I know a lot of kids who do not buy passes because of the lack of a park. A Park would also attract a lot of tourists here. Great snow, great terrain, and a great park, this is a winning combination. If you have not noticed, most mountains that are a decent size have parks. Parks bring people to the mountains.

Tending to the park on a daily basis is not mandatory. I know you are saying that with all the snow that we get, grooming the park would take a lot of effort and money. Well then, during the time that it snows a lot groom every few days. It does not really matter that much. We will all be just skiing on those days. Possibly even groom twice a week. Fridays would be good so the park for the weekend would be well set up. Tuesday is another prime day because not too many people come during the week so grooming it for one day would probably be fine for the rest of the week.

I have heard from many reliable sources that you are dead against parks. Why is this? I know liability is a big thing but a great way to get money is to charge for the park. When people buy a seasons pass, have an extra charge to be allowed in the park. I guarantee that all of the kids I know why ski and board would pay that extra money to have full admission into a park.

Kids are wanting to do more jumps because of the recent explosion of twin tip skis. For kids that are under seventeen, this is all that we have known since we have been seriously into skiing. All of the big name movies have terrain parks and jumps. This is the direction that skiing is heading and you should embrace it. If you are worried about kids hurting themselves all you have to worry about is the design of a park. If a park is designed well then accidents are down to a minimum. I have visited many other mountains in the past two years and gone out of my way to ask patrols how many accidents that they have in the park. It is shocking that it is not that many. It is mostly people that have no experience at all in skiing that do not know how handle the park.

All I ask is for you to take this proposal into consideration. I know it takes a lot to keep a terrain park running but Whitewater could benefit greatly from it. If you have any interest in this I have other plans where the park could be set up and a design for it

Geoff, get one of them grooming rake things and write up a proposal for the idea. Use Shames for examples of how much the park has done for the mountain and how there are opportunities for events and all that and, if they say yes, get out there and start shovelling like a mad man.

Mike told me that there was no need for a park at whitewater and how it would drive no more people to the hill. I also including a petition with 300 signatures, and not just anyones signatures but of people who actually ski or snowboard on a regular basis. I gave him design plans, liability options and ways it would increase safety on his mountain. Sadly, it did nothing for him.

^That sounds more like the snobby skiing-is-going-down-a-hill and turning kinda guy... just because he doesn't hit it he doesn't get it. Seriously every hill should have a park, especially the shitty ones... if you have bad terrain there's nothing else to do.

^well..we def do not not have bad terrain by any means, he just wants to keep the hill the same way it has been for 25 years. This attitude is making people quite angry. Last year, my friends and i were so bored that we slid a picnic table just after the ski hill closed because we had nothing else to do. No one was sitting near them or anything. The patrols were even watchin us do it. Well some fuckin asshole who works at the hill and hates all the kids comes over and takes my pass away! No warning, no asking us not to do it. I talked to him for a bit about how we need a park and all, and to my face he said ' You kids shouldn't even be allowed on the hill'...WTF man...we are what is going to be running and spupporting this place in the next ten years and he says this load of fuckin crap. Really at our hill there are only about 3 people who are holding back the building of a park, sadly they are the 3 people at the top.

Well, another thing to keep in mind is that as far as liablility goes, something like less than 1% of all lawsuits (customers suing ski areas) are because of rails. I cannot offer proof to this, but it was said at a PSIA event, and I might be able to dig up some specifics if ya need. At least it could help an area get some rails (if nothing else, at least it would be a start).

just start building jumps on the groomers and pulling logs on the trail to grind. Eventually you'll get enough jumps and stuff that the ski patrol won't care anymore.

hugeairkid, I'll probably write a letter similar to that, except for the fact that I'm voluteering myself to do most of the work.

^^ all of these are good suggestions. With these big companies it's all about money. You have to make it look like they will make a ton of money with having to spend a lot. I'm sure there are other insurance concerns and stuff but as long as you sell the hell out of it it just might work.

The probably is that my hill is small 'mom and pop' operation doesn't even want to change the menu..let alone build a park

Our mountain jumped on the bandwagon very quickly.. I'm pretty lucky. We've got about 15 slopes and 4 of them are terrain features.. 2 pipes, 2 parks. And they just put up a pretty sweet park and pipes site!

you know what you do.... go find a hill that is public property. and find a way to set up some of your own features. and let kids hit them. the only thing is that you probably cant charge people to use it (b/c its public property that your using) and you may have to have kids sign liability wavers or whatnot before they use it, that way if one of them breaks their hip or something they cant sue. that might work, but i be the PO-PO would have a different view on how things work.

it is the insurance unless you can come up with the extra say 100,000 a year depending on the size of the hill i dont think that they are going to be giving you a park sorry

true that it is the insurance that creates the problem, but another thing to keep in mind is that PSIA, CSIA, and AASI are all providing training on how to teach in the park/pipe and the skill/fundamentals needed, as well as progressions and all based on safety first. As far as insurance goes, the area itself can cover their ass a little by being able to say that they have instructors trained on how to teach park/pipe skiing with a focus on safety. Basically, that then takes some liability away from the ski area and places it back on the customer (at least a little) because propery instruction is available.

Also, the idea (similar to Whistler's) about a secondary pass, that is considered a legal binding document (Highest Level park) where you have to sign for a pass granting you access to the park should also cover/limit the ski areas liabilty (so long as the park is properly maintained).

yeah...make a video with interviews in it of kids from the community asking questions about their skiing/boarding and like, if they would use the park and stuff, and then also include yourself/yourselves doing stuff just to show what could happen and everything...a bunch of my friends did a project just like this and it's finally coming together
