Is my water filter still working?

I have a katadyn water purifier that I've been using to filter water while I camp, I was messing around and tried filtering some sea water (we were on the ocean) and didnt clean it before storing it away. There was some residue on the inside of some of the tubes and when I used it this week, I got a gnarly stomach bug like 2 days after using it last. anyone know if I got sick from something entirely different or if I need to get my filter replaced?

Sounds like its just dirty and isn't working its best. Give it a good scrub and test it out again is my advice.

i would say get a replacement filter. salt water is really hard on them especially if you have been using it all summer.

If water filters desalinated water, the world would be a better place.
But alas, they don't. I'd say just get a new filter.

probably one of my biggest pet peevs is when people come over and down my bottled water like its free. i have a big water jug that i just fill with tap water then put in the fridge and drink throughout the day, much better alternative.

Junk grows in those things if you don't clean them or wipe them out dry and then randomly store them for awhile. I've seen mold in Britas before. The salt water probably wasn't the hottest idea either, but just wash it out reaaaaally good a few times and ditch the old filter. If you're nervous then try running boiling water through it the first few times. Good luck!

A town in Australia just banned bottled water. Hopefully it will be the new cool thing to do.
If you aren't already boiling the water, try it too.

I'd love to see town in Canada and the US follow suit

That would be very good to see. It will never happen, though. Not part of the American way.
If your filter did not come with cleaning supplies, I would suggest checking out Camelbak's cleaning kit. It should have the right stuff to get your filter super clean, and it is well worth it to have your equipment in working order, especially something as critical to your health as a water filter.

I think it depends on how much water you fltered and how long you had gone before cleaning it after. It might be possible to clean out the filter but your filter was not meant for desalination, I think you might have to clean out your pump and replace the filter, that would be best if your really unsure.

Excuse my lack of specification, but the Camelbak kit will be good for cleaning the pump. It sounds near imperative that the filter is in need of replacement.
