That's nuts man. I don't think I would ever consider even skiing the intended line, for the very reason that anything coming down slope would likely knock you off, and there is no way of avoiding it.

As far as liability and such, there definitely should have been a 'cliff' sign; I've seen them on way smaller cliffs, at W/B. Yes, the 'avalanche' size/type does matter, but I would suggest (from my understanding of the story) that even a slab would not be the fault of poor avy control on patrol's part. As I read it, the only access to that point was closed. While you believe it was roped due to exposed rocks (you can't assume why ropes are placed), the fact remains that you were skiing in a closed area. While I don't really see an issue with it, you'll have a hard time convincing the resort that they are liable to control ALL inbounds terrain (including that which is closed temporarily).

You could try it, and it's unlikely that anything bad would come of it, but be aware of what the resort might come back with, and that it may result in permanent, negative impacts on everyones skiing experience. W/B has, as of yet, done a pretty good job of not interfering to a stupid degree, but with enough complaints and such, they may change their ways. Just saying... but keep it in mind.

I'd definitely talk to them though, maybe just don't open with: "I want a pass because I almost killed myself and I think it's your fault."

Has anyone heard the Jackson Hole Local story of "Forest Jump?" Local skier at Jackson who had lived there for several years. Knew the place pretty well, great skier, was dropping a Double Stager that was closed off underneath Thunder Lift or the lift right next to Thunder I wana say- anyway it was like 20 on the first and 60 on the second. SO HE HITS THE 20 and HAD SO MUCH SPEED GOIN INTO THE 60 then it caused him to bury emself upon landing. Ski Patrol obviously was called, they came, and dug em out. They gave em CPR and he wakes up. Freaks out because he sees patrol and does not want his pass pulled so he grabs his shit and ditches patrol. He escaped them completey and did not get in trouble. UN FUCKING BELIEVEABLE if you ask me. Anyone heard this before?

shitty injuries and glad to hear you're still alive.  Seems like you're a bit of a gord though... why would you want to billy goat off cirque? I've skied both the lines you have outlined in your picture and they are slow, awkward traverses.  The top (fatter) one is a bit more of actually skiing than billy-goating, but still, you're just side cutting over to the bottom of coffin. Looks like your pic is taken in mid-may or something too... that bottom line isn't nearly as haggard in the winter.  I don't think you can really call a wet, spring snow slab/sluff and avi, but those spring snow sluffs will still take you down (as evidenced).  I free-ride whistler 50+ days a year so I know my zones.  That's a gay one.  There is a sick gap though on the right side of your picture (skiers left) that you can do in the winter where you gap from the top line, over the line you bailed off, into some tranny below.  It's much farther (skiers) left of where you bailed.  I don't know if you want to go back there though.  If you do, go in the winter, not the spring.  All the best with your recovery dude.

sorry, the gap is what looks like a nice double stage in your photo, but is actually just snowed over and you hit the bottom cliff off of the end of the thin line you bailed on.

i skiied 50 days this yr too

u know the area obviously.

i skiied that line maybe 3 days before the picture.

i didnt see the type of slide, it wasnt a slab tho.

i didnt have time to look.

that is a sick cliff on skiers right , yes

i wouldnt call that a gay zone, theres some nice turns coming out of there.

and the lower line is exciting

I skiied it in the winter too,

i was just trying to kill some time waiting for my buddy to come up from the day lots.

It was my 3rd run through that morning.

the traverse is the scary part, cuz of the exposure.

The avi was only triggered when i tripped on a hidden rock. my body impact triggered the slide.

could have been small, but who cares.

it fucked me up

remeber the guy who went over the 300fter.  His last few moments, he described how he said to himself that he could do it.  And he charged of the cliff.  In this case, he made the decision to front flip out of it and hit with his feet first.  People who have been skiing long enough don't "shit their pants," I would say.  They always make (sub)conscious  decisions to salvage their situation.  It becomes almost instinctive to get rightside-up, feet down hill, and the like

Update -

I have nerve damage which is causing severe atrophy...

I went to acupuncture and that was really neat, it works at linking up areas in the body to each other.

It also seems they couldnt get the bolt into my hip in all the way, so my muscle rubs on it, so they are going to take everything out!!!

The part above this cliff is perma-closed for obvious avalanche reasons... by "the lower part" i assume you're meaning the far right side of the cliff, which i've skied too... but just because you went below where the rope was set (higher up) doesn't mean it was fair game.

In retrospect you're really lucky you slid off it slow and hit rocks early because if you took ANY speed off that thing whatsoever you'd miss the extremely short transition and just land straight up flat. Lucky i say. +vibes on the recovery

Was this the cliff just to the lookers right going up the peak chair?  The landing off that is so flat, man you are lucky.  That cliff is no where near 160 ft though, if I am thinking of the right one.  Its not sheer either, you must have been coming in hot to clear the rocks.

Get better man and perfect that Peguin slide to front!
