Stereo faceplate connection problem

I have a stero system on my boat and while the boat is not in use, the connection on the front of the stereo itself has not become slightly weathered. Now, when the faceplate is on, i cannot control the volume or any of the buttons even with the remote. Im wondering if anyone can help me out on how to improve the connection or safely clean the (brass?) outlet that connects the faceplate to the stereo..thanks

if you see corrosion on the brass, you may be able to get ot off with some emery cloth, or very gently clean it with lemon juice or vinegar. when you put it back on, go to the auto store and pick up a small red and white can of CRC di-electric grease. it's the thickest stuff you can buy. put that on electrical contacts you dont want to get corroded (keeps salty and moist air from getting in). also helps the belt in ur car from squeaking.
