Anyone know how much terrain usually gets closed off to the public for the Winter Olympics? Obviously they have the olympic runs, but i assume they have training areas, and cordon off nearby areas? Is it best to avoid the Winter Olympics host resort if you just want to ski there?
You do not want to be at an Olympic host resort at the time of the Olympics. Not only will a portion of the mountain be closed off, but the whole entire place will be super-crowded. There will be gapers galore, and you will never be able to find elbow room. If you go just after the Olympics, however, the numbers should be super low. Or, just go somewhere that the Olympics aren't taking place. But, if you are bent on going to Whistler (I assume) then wait until after the Olympics.
not sure the full details of how they will try to manage the situation... they won't let anyone drive up to whistler during the olympics unless they can prove they live there, and therefor have a parking spot for their car. now i would like to think that if you manage to get your ass up to whistler a month or so before the olympics with a car, then they won't kick you out of town (maybe).
Well it's not gonna be crappy all season and Whistler is a BIG place with lots of terrain that gapers will definitely not be skiing on.
I'd say go if you have the money (it's super expensive there) it's kind of the chance of a lifetime even if the skiing isn't the best ever... You won't regret it
