Driving to NYC First time Driving in USA

So im driving to NYC from toronto tmrw.

wondering what the laws are like down in the states, never driving in the USA before.

Just like the general rules, like in Canada if you do 120 KM on a 100 KM road your pretty much fine, not going to get pulled over. do any more and your likely to get booked.

so yea, anyone done this before and how long does it actually take google maps says about 8 hours, but ive done trips in much less than they have said before

it really depends on the area.  some towns and highways the cops are real lenient, and others they pull people over for going 4 mph over the limit.

I usually drive around 5-10 mph over

if you are nervous just don't do anything stupid and you will be fine

you'll get pulled over if you're going 10+ mph over the speed limit, i usually cruise at around 9 mph over, i still have a junior license so if i'm pulled over going 10+ over then i get it taken away

on the highway it's much less likely to get pulled over if you're in the right lane, try to stay there. you'll notice down in CT and NY that everyone drives in the left lane, it's because they're dumbasses, stay in the right

you have to be 18 y/o to drive in manhattan and a tip for driving there is just drive like a total asshole, gun it when you get the chance, slam on the brakes, honk the horn, if you're not pushy you'll never get anywhere

try to drive into the city, park somewhere, and never use your car again until you leave, take the subway, walk, and a cab as a last resort, but don't drive yourself around

well the rule is usually 5-10 over the limit, but over that your going to get a ticket.
If your driving in the city, GET READY. Its scary shit man. You can't be a bitch, but you cant be stupid at the same time. People will cut you off, not let you in, all you can think of. but thats whats its like, so if your someone who doesnt know whats going on, you will get shunned. dont be afraid to stand your ground and make moves and shit, just dont slow other people down and dont let horns discourage you.

btw, let me know how that chinese restaurant is

yeah my first time ever driving in the city the first thing i did was gently rear end someone and then get rear ended myself, this dumbass gypsy cab stopped in the middle of the highway, right smack in the middle so i slammed on my brakes and slowed down enough that it only bent my license plate and the guy behind me clipped my light as he swerved out of the way

turns out the cab driver was fucked up on something and thought he was driving into a pole when there was nothing

5-10 over and you should be fine. When on the highway, go with the flow, if everyone is doing 80 in a 65, roll with them. Its when you are the only one doing 85 that you are asking to get pulled over. When in the city, anticipate the unexpected, be aggressive, and always be on the lookout for people and bikes.

DEFINITELY LOOK OUT FOR CABS. my dad drives like a cab, i get so nervous in the car with him. CAB WILL OWN YOU. they drive crazy, cut you off, stop in the middle of nowhere, squeeze into tight places, just crazy accident prone shit. watch out

im guessing youll be taking the i-90?  the limit is 65 so you can go around 75mph without getting pulled over, but no higher than that because the state troopers will rape you...usually traffic moves in the lower 70s, so if you go with the flow you will be fine

yea cabs are brutal, but gypsy cabs are worse, the fake cabs that are super sketch
haha the car i hit had basically no bumper because it had backed into so many things
it still sucked tho, it made me never want to drive again

and the severity of the ticket goes up in 10 mph increments so if you going to go 11mph over you'll get basically the same ticket as if you were going 19 over. I usually speed but I consider 7mph as the safety zone like 63 is closer to 65 than it is to 60 so I dont consider it safe. but I usually go like 80ish anyway (had a few tickets lol) but enjoy the nice roads (we have these things called shoulders, its like extra pavment on the otherside of the white line)  and the time with your girlie in NYC.

the ticket price is 10 times the mph you were going over the speed limit, so if you were going 12 mph over your ticket would be 120 bucks

no. i got clocked at 105 in a 55, that's 50 over and the ticket was only $3xx. according to you it should have been 5xx. but it got lowered to 71 in a 55 and that' sixteen over so it should have been $160 but it was $128. and i only got 4 points. 6 and i'm fucked with my junior license so i lucked out BIG TIME. but anyways you're wrong.

Definitely best advice for interstate and highway travel. Coming from Toronto though, I assume you'll be traveling on highways...generally 55mph...go 70 and you're asking for a ticket. 65 is pretty safe. And obviously have respect for the speed limits through towns, as you would your own neighborhood.

Well, I am assuming you have driven in Toronto, so you are likely pretty well versed in city/urban driving.

Highways, it's been said. Stick with the flow. And keep in mind the cops will more than likely target you when deciding cars to pull over. Out of staters or foreigners for that matter are easy revenue generators.

And avoid driving in Manhattan at ALL costs. Walking is practically faster than driving there.

Well, they do drive more like responsible, considerate people instead of arrogant, self-absorbed assfucks. I will agree with that. But it's still a hell of a lot more hectic than a suburban area.

very true, that way you're less likely to show up in court to appeal the ticket because you live further away from the courthouse, cops have much more of a chance to get paid that way than if they take out a local

also in nyc be really careful opening your door for cars and especially bikers

i live in the heart of downtown toronto, so the urban driving is no worries for me, im sure new york is more fucked up, but i'm no country bumpkin, i love city driving

just trying to get an idea of the "unwritten rules" if you will like this 9 and your fine 10 and your mine rule, up in canada doing 20 over KM and your fine anymore and your fucked

NO RIGHT TURNS ON RED LIGHTS IN NYC, I've seen countless pedestrians be inches away from getting clipped by some asshole who doesn't know how to drive in a city.

watch out for NY state Troopers on 90 (NYS Thurway), they ticket for going 10 over the limit.
and dont speed in construction zones! NY is strict about their road work speed limits, they will arrest you
