Yay for political threads. Ha just kidding, lets honestly not put too much politics in this thread and stick with facts. Here goes.

Obama made a a whole bunch of really important promises that got him elected. Only problem is he isn't really keeping to his word. How does the rest of NS feel about this?

Take for example gay rights and the military. Obama made the promise to end Don't Ask Don't Tell which won him probably millions of votes and he's yet to do anything about it. He says he still has to convince people to go with the change but he's Commander in Chief and could choose to end the enforcement of it but chooses not to.

He also promised to stop raids on the Medical Marijuana dispensaries which happened for a little bit but they're back at it prosecuting innocent people in the eyes of the state.

There's more but those are two big ones stuck in my head.

This video sums up a lot of my feelings towards Barry right now.

notice, that figure is "by 2020." Right now, it will cost American families thousands of dollars. And those estimates that are that far off are always way off. And I thought these energy saving ideas to increase energy were supposed to save Americans money using less resources and less energy through greater efficiency... By 2020 it shouldnt be costing americans anything if this bill is so great at making energy more effecient.

As for that western climate initiative, that is a states issue. Cap and trade is national. It will affect this country terribly. Look at how many businesses left california for arizona.

Basically, he's an ass. He won't suspend the act or even bother to help any soldiers caught in the DADT mire. At a time when we crucially need soldiers, and many gays are chomping at the bit to get DADT repealed so that they CAN fight for their country, Obama has left gays out in the rain and decided to go fuck up other things, rather than do something positive.

seriously he could of been telling us all these lies maybe why he is not taking action. Even though people do have a valid point about him only being in office for around six months. But still seems like he would be sharing his ideas with us, that he said he was going to do.

But esseintaly this thread is pointless because we have no idea what he is thinking or what he is planning for the future of the USA. We just have to wait to see what he does before we make asumtions about our "lieing sack of shit" know as our president.

Not a god. But he WAS supposed to be a good person. Someone who would accomplish all that he promised and was elected to accomplish.We don't need his story or his words, we need him to DO.

im gonna be critical but how long is the long run exactly?  i mean its great to think for future generations but if that means this generation is gonna end up all broke and homeless i personally dont think its worth it.....  but thats juts me being all narrow minded again.

a less than 2 grand isnt going to make people broke and homeless, not by a long shot. im not saying we should completely disregard the current generation, it just seems like conservatives problems with several of obamas ideas fail to take into account money that could be saved in the scheme of things, even if you might be paying for it now.

Um, the WCI is a cap-and-trade system. And it proposes almost exactly the same decreases in emissions. While the House bill proposes a 17% reduction below 2005 levels of emissions by 2020, the WCI proposes a 15% reduction below 2005 levels of emissions by 2020. Both initiatives propose an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

My point by highlighting the WCI is that it is a cap-and-trade system that is being implemented internationally (across Canada, the Western United States, and Northern Mexico). And no one across these states is hearing anything about costs increasing. Hell, very few people even know that it exists. I guess what I'm trying to say is that over 50% of the country (geographically, and perhaps population-wise as well considering the states involved), are onboard with some sort of cap-and-trade system already, be it the RGGI (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative -- across the Northeastern states) or the WCI. They are onboard with these programs NOW. AS WE SPEAK. And there has been no discussion of an increase in cost to citizens as a result of either of these initiatives. That's why I'm saying that much of the talk about increasing costs is being fabricated as part of the endless game of politics in Washington, D.C.

Didn't Obama also promise to renegotiate NAFTA before he was elected? Now THAT has to be done.

yes, but look at the economy right now. This legislation is terrible. This is the absolute worst time to pass it. It will just lose more jobs. thinking in the long term is good, and I understand that. But right now the economy needs to get in order, and this will not help and thinking in the short term is of more benefit to us.

Hugo Chavex explained that Obama may be further left than him and Castro. If Hugo Chavez is supporting the way the government is going, it is certainly not a good sign.


Saying Obama is a republican is laughable. Its a ridiculous statement, and at the same time a testament to how bad the republican party is for straying away from its conservative roots...Colin Powell (fuck him).

What are you complaining about the republicans? Democrats have a majority in everything right now. You should have no problem getting anything passed. Fortunately, there are level headed true democrats that have sense and are not flaming liberals that will hopefully stop some of this bullshit. YOu complain about republicans...8 voted for cap and trade in the house. For the record, I am not republican.

Be pissed off. I would be too if I supported that issue. (Im not against it. I just choose to care about other issues).

I just don't understand how we can put someone infront of our nation that has had no experience with our United States Military AT ALL.  As president you are commander in chief of the US.  In my eyes, Obama was a civilian who was into politics.  He never served our Nation so why should he be making huge decisions for our nation.

This isn't WW2, we don't need our Generals to become President anymore. So maybe as a nation we wanted a man of the people who had a general interest in our well-being. Hopefully that's what we got and this dude is just trying to get through all the politics, but it isn't looking good.

He was a member of the Socialist New Party (every mention of his name was deleted off their website before the election, but the web archiver thing, the one everyone looks at what NS used to look like, found him on there as a member).

Bail outs...I know a lot of this shit started under Bush and Mccain supported it, but its fucking stupid. government has no place having that big of a role in the private sector.

No one has heard anything because cap and trade is a much bigger thing. No one complained, but possibly citizens of massachusetts started health care in their state. If a few states want to do it. That is fine. That is there state. Same with states taking stimulus money. I believe in state's rights to vote for what they want. If Utah opts out, thats great, if they dont, well, theyll get fucked.

This is a naitonal issue that will damage the economy. Implying that since no one has heard about costs rising for the WCI doesnt mean prices wont skyrocket for cap and tax. The data is there, and cap and trade is a terrible thing for america and the economy. It is a shithouse piece of legislation too. Look at the points of the Bill, it talks about compensating for decreases in funding for medicare/medicaid and social security...know what that means? Job losses. They know this legislation will destroy jobs. Its obvious.

I took that as a good thing. I thought of it as a guy who had the interest of the people in mind and while he didn't have 30 years of political history. He was going to be honest and tell people what was going on and let us decide how we wanted our lives to go.

the problem i have is i give a decent reason, i think so at least, and they keep harping on the same question of "why does your dad want guns?"  because its one of our rights that couldnt be taken away but the dirty liberal hippies in my town dont understand that.

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying; WCI and RGGI are cap-and-trade systems. Also, it's important to note that over 100 countries already have cap-and-trade systems in effect. The US signed the Kyoto Protocol, so we have a duty/responsibiliy to make concessions to fight climate change. And we've had similar cap-and-trade systems in effect to fight acid rain for years. And it hasn't caused Americans one penny. And finally, you have not yet shown me one objective, nonpartisan study or source (i.e. not FOX News) that claims that average annual increase in cost to Americans will be over $3,000.

Ok, I'm about to go hiking on this beautiful day but I couldn't let this one slide by.  There are too many misconceptions around the two issues you talked about here.

The cap and trade system is compltely bogus.  It does nothing for the environment other than keep corporations paying extra taxes.  I get the incentives of it but fuck, if I don't pollute, does that give me the right to trade you the amount that I don't pollute so that you can?  That's fucking ridiculous.   You shouldn't be allowed to pay to pollute more than you're allowed to no-matter who gains from it.  Yes, I know, I'm oversimplifying it but the fact o the matter is that is how it works.

As for the "fighting" global climate change? Give me a fucking break.  I'm a Natural Resource Management Major so if anybody hears the endless daily rhetoric of the idea that we need to "fight" climate change it's me.  What too many people fail to realize is that climate change is a natural occurrence.  The earth goes through cycles.  You cannot fight the natural cycles of the earth, it will only cause more unforseen problems in the future.  The only thing we can do is work WITH the earth to create a sustainable, earth friendly future in terms of energy and materials.  The idea of fighting climate change is proposterous and fighting the earth is what got us in this problem in the first place. 

You want to fight climate change? Elect a fucking leader with a backbone that will rid the world of the corrupt special interest groups that keep truly sustainable technology under wraps and keeping us in a perpetual state of fear by making outlandish claims through the media about we need to fight global warming.  Better, yet, since this is an idealist claim, take it into your own hands and make the change from outside the overly corrupt government.  If there's anything we need to fight right now (hint, it's not wars for oil or the environment to suite our narrow needs as a species) it's the special interest groups that keep us from achieving true change, not Obama change which has left people changeless, both monetarily and in manner he promised.

We emit CO2 and other greenhouse gases when we burn fossil fuels.
The CO2 stays in the atmosphere.
With more CO2 in the atmosphere, less heat (the sun's energy) is bounced back into space.
Thus, with more CO2 in the atmosphere, the Earth warms.
This causes ice caps to melt into the ocean. Ice caps reflect the sun's energy.
Because more and more of the polar ice caps are water (which is darker), more heat is absorbed.
The system accelerates.

How then, would capping CO2 not benefit the environment?

There has been a cap-and-trade system in effect for years to fight acid rain. It has worked exactly as it was supposed to. And it hasn't costed consumers a penny.

I should add that in my region, the only major energy company already draws much of its power from renewable sources (mainly hydroelectric and wind). And there hasn't been a major cost increase in our area as a direct result of that.
