They're giving despite a hard time with the portra thing. I think I read somewhere that the 400 speed of either variety might have more saturated colors than it's 160 speed counterpart, but I could just be making stuff up. Never heard of any color shifts though, like one's not more red than the other or something.

Used to the critiques are good but the camera recommendations are awful, I don't know why they keep recommending 10-15 year old camera that are SD

The photo section on SP is two toned: on one hand there are those people who know their shit and post sick pictures, but on the other there are those who need a four page thread to continually rephrase the question "how do you make good pictures with flash" or "teach me how to set up lighting so it's pretty, I want one model I can use for every shot. I have pocketwizards and sb-900s teach me how to make pretty pictures". And then they don't comprehend why their centered composition of a guy-in-the-sky is awful. I really wish people knew the slightest bit about art theory before asking for crits of photos of objects on their kitchen table nearest to where they unpacked their rebel xs.

I agree. But honestly every photography website I've been to is pretty bad in terms of people critiquing composition and lighting. Skateperception has been the most helpful by far with helping me understand how to use flashes. SP is seriously a 100x better when asking for a critique of a photo than NS. I can't stand how people make threads on here asking to critique their photos of a flower or a overexposed skier.

Of course there are bad sides of every forum, but I have to say that the photo sections have taught me so much about composition and, especially, MF photography. Going on there makes me really miss my Hassy (claim). I understand that its hard to compare ski filming and skate filming which causes the disrespect you see, but IMO skate photography is well above the level of ski photo
I am hstove on there, haven't posted in a long time though

No. The best place to help you understand flashes is strobist.com.
If you've never heard of it, I seriously reccommend you scope it out. SP is a whole shit ton better for critiques than NS though... the best I've ever seen is AS Cartel (formerly WheelsAndWax) because you have to pay to be a member. Consequently, only people who are serious about it post up, and often enough, after a quick critique, they go down for mag submission.
I am not a member because I am too cheap... I wish W&W were still alive.

And while we're on the topic of their photo section, too many people on there suggest getting flashes on skate shots. No matter how awful a photo may be they seem to think a flash will fix it. That's mostly the noobs though. Every once and a while I'll go in and say they need to look around at how the sun is, because they're completely oblivious to the nice natural light around.

The filming section is horrendous. It's a bunch of little kids and stuck up assholes who don't have the slightest clue about cinematography. Oh and they all copy each others shitty skate videos because they lack the creativity and skills to create something of their own.

I remember I used to go on there in 2006, and people would get livid because I would talk shit about Sony HDV cameras, saying they were only 580 lines of full frame imagery.
They've always been retards. NS is pretty bad, but skateperception is whole different low.
