Someone recommended me this book and after looking into it a bit further I have discovered the book has no real academic worth dispite being a #1 international best seller. Essentially the premise of the book is to discredit capitalism entirely and blame it for most of the worlds problems we face today. She claims that after "disasters" such as Iraq, Sept 11, and hurricane Katrina there are large corporations that sweep in to take advantage of the people and exploit them. This may be true on some small level but the way she equates globalization to this evil corporate take over is laughable.
She takes one of the most renown economists of the 20th century (Milton Friedman) and distorts his views blaming him for many international world problems. Capitalism does not cause these problems and free markets where people can make decisions for themselves have always been shown to promote developing social welfare. Friedman was one of the best thinkers of our times and he was instrumental in ending the conscription process in the US as it violates personal liberty which is of the upmost importance to him.
The main problem I have with books like this is that they support the general public of idiots who cant research anything for themselves. Klein has no education and she used to be an adamant consumer of brand names and living the material life. Sept 11 apparently shocked her into taking a deeper look at things. Since then she has written 3 or 4 books all of which are garbage best sellers. She even admits in interviews that books she wrote 5 years ago are outdated and not 100% correct. Why do people want to believe her opinion over someone like Milton Friedman? She is a journalist and it is her job to make a story out of nothing with little or educational background on the subject. Friedman studied this topic his entire life and worked with people who actually can and do make the world a better place. Globalization is not evil and anyone with an education realizes that it is going to be a major part of all our lives and future.
