Not necessarily. Right now GM's revenues are way down, and they're in an industry.

Business is all about adapting to survive, or going under. While I didn't agree with the cars manufacturer's bailout, its done, so they need to use that money wisely. Starting by downsizing just like the video said. Ive never understood why GM or Ford needed to make essentially the same vehicle, on two or three different platforms. It just didn't make sense to me. It will take time, but the American car companies will come around. With the way the economy is now, nobody can expect a radical change overnight.

i'm getting so sick of that commercial. here in canada we don't have a lot of commercials so we get the same fuckin ones over and over and i've been seeing this one every fucking commercial break.

if i ever buy american, it'll be because i'm rich and can afford a Noble or something. otherwise, i'm buying euro or jap. the american companies are always at least 5 years behind when it comes to innovation.

i've only seen it a handful of times, but then again, I don't watch much tv.

america's auto industry needs to adapt like mentioned, and in my opinion, become more like japanese.

i think ford will recover alright, with their lineup as of now they are okay, and all of their vehicles look pretty sweet, especially the flex

In order for GM to pay back their government loans they would need to have 20+ years of record breaking profits, that isn't going to happen any time soon. This company is heavily in debt not only to creditors but the the Federal Government. Their labor costs will  have not and will not go down enough because of the continued dominance of the UAW. If GM workers were smart they would all take massive pay and benefit cuts so there's a chance that they may still have a decent job in the future.

True. Other than pay cuts what do you suppose?

never buying a gm or chrysler everrrr.  and mitsubishi because they built the engines for the zero planes that bombed  pearl harbor.

Well what do you think of it? Does it inspire you? Does it make you think GM will come back dependable and stable?

having everyone in the UAW take a big paycut is a start, but gm will never be stable again unless they start building cars people actually want to drive. Nobody wants to drive a 2 tonne suv these days with the price of gas. We want safe small and economical cars that look good and are fun to drive. That is where the profit is to be made.

I agree with the SUV thing. People want reliable fuel efficient cars these days, and companies like GM have been producing gas guzzlers. Is GM's marketing and research and development team to blame? Honda and Toyota have been doing creating small, economical cars that are fun to drive for years, what is it that the Japanese have that America doesn't?

(For the record, I'm not trying to start arguments, I'm just trying to see what everyone thinks)

You asked will the American Auto Industry revive. I say yes it will and hopefully with alot of new companies in the mix. Why is it that Japan has almost 9 car manufactures and the United States (one of if not the biggest car market) only had 3. Only having 3 manufactures caused them to become stagnant and put them where they are today.

Just for the record, this whole ordal hasnt really effected ford. They almost had to file for bankrucpty not too long ago and they completely rebuilt their company. They are already through this and are doing the best out of all of them.

GM made a terrible bet with the ethanol thing, no one should be driving cars fueled by corn, it's inefficient because it takes to much energy to produce the ethanol and immoral. Also GM was already drowning under its debts and obligations way before this currant recession hit. It gave so many raises and benefits to its workers based on the demands of the UAW during the boom times when they were Americas preeminent car maker, but when demand started to shift to less labor intensive small cars the UAW refused to take the cuts in benefits and wages that correlated with the much lower price these small cars were made at.

There is simply no way that GM will ever make money as long as the UAW is around, much less has the power that Obama has given it. Really the only hope for GM and its workers is to abolish the UAW and let wages and benefits reflect the market price of the products that Americans are demanding and that they need to produce. As a poster said above this means more fuel efficient, safer, and in many cases smaller cars. The Volt is not something Americans are demanding and is at the hight of folly, this care will be 60,000$ base when it comes out and their are not to many people who are going to be spending Mercades money on a Chevy, even if it is electric.

I would propose that GM had gone into bankruptcy back in December when it should have instead of recieving billions in loans (gifts) from the Feds (all of us) that they will most likely never be able to pay back in full. That way the taxpayers wouldn't have wasted all that money just to keep the company afloat until may when it really did go bankrupt. I would like to see GM liquidated and have its plants and skilled labor bought up by new investors who want to build a resurgant American car industry, one that is dynamic and competitive and actually makes products people want to buy, like Hyundia is.
