alright before i post this, realize that I know it should be in regionals which it will be soon. I just figured that this is a pressing and important issue all the eyes on SG should see.

HELP SAVE BIG SKY PARK!
It has recently come to my attention through reliable sources that Big Sky, its employees and most importantly, the terrain park desperately need the community and it's support. Due to uncertainties surrounding the economy, Boyne has had to tighten down on budget which not only effects it's numerous other resorts, but us too here in Big Sky Montana.

The current proposal to maintain a low budget is to eliminate the Ambush park all together (including the superpipe). This would mean a smaller park restrained to only Swifty.

This threat is serious and needs much support, thought and effort to even begin to catch the ear of Boyne/Big Sky.

We need EVERYONE who loves Big Sky and their Park to stand up and make their voice heard.



Soon, a thoughtful and concerned letter will be written. At the bottom there will be room for signatures from each and everyone of you stressing the fact that if these cuts are made to the Park, all who sign will not be purchasing a Big Sky pass for the 09/10 season. This way Boyne and Big Sky will be able to fully realize what a negative impact no Terrain Park would have.

Keep your eyes peeled for a link to the letter or a date where the signing will occur. Thank you for the support.

That sucks! I got an old HS bud whose been shreddin there the past few years, and that would definitely be a bummer to loose the park. For the ones considering the cut, having a good park is critical, cause if you wanna attract people to visit, they are comming for the natural terrain and snow, but if thats not there, you NEED a park for the down days. If im gonna be stuck riding crapped out groomers all day, that would be a massive disapointment.

If cuts absolutely do need made, im sorry, but the super pipe would prolly be the one to let go. those are wicked expensive to maintain, and really, not as fun as a good park

i agree that a pipe with 24 foot walls is not necessary to a good park.  waste of snow, imho.

damn that sucks. i would agree, if anything get rid of the pipe. big sky's pipe really isn't that good and probably costs a lot to maintain. if they got rid of ambush though, i would end up just going to moonlight. i would sign that petition or whatever

I never use it, I only use the swifty park,  move the rails to swifty and I wouldn't care as much... Would be nice to see the swifty park extend longer down the hill

I've never skied Big Sky, but i'll put m name to any petition that involves protecting and enhancing terrain parks.

Though if talk of a 24ft superpipe it correct, it may be a bit excessive?


If cuts MUST be made, maybe suggest reducing the size of the pipe to cut maintenance costs?

alright, ill fill ya in on some more details.

in order to make up for deficits across many of their resorts, Boyne must make cuts. At Big Sky, it is around 2 million. I would agree to get rid of the pipe. It would reduce costs, but not nearly enough. What they wanna do it reduce the whole park to basically a mini park about half a run long. No big jumps and only a few rails.

The idea we are tossing around  to propose to the mtn manager is to move the park to a different run, which is less steep (less snowmaking) and on the back side of the mtn. No superpipe either.

The super pipe is already a dirt structure thats there year round, I doubt they'll bulldoze (which costs $$) to save money in the winter.  Maybe they just wont cut the pipe every day and wont blow the 17 feet of snow needed to fully cover it but you'll probably still have a natural pipe to hit anyways..

the problem with moving it to the backside of andesite is the sun. its gonna melt sooo fast back there, maintanence would be horrible. and is that even steep enough to get speed for jumps? i doubt it.

id agree, axe the pipe. this was the first year we had a legit one, toss it. but we have probably the best jumps in montana, id hate to see em go.

Moonlight had over 50 features in their park this year... a good alternative to big sky, although it doesn't have the terrain BS has

1st-eliminate the pipe.

2nd- even though i love em, reduce the park staff too a select few.

3rd-quite wasting time on Andisite mnt.  build the park in a location that recieves much more natural snow, maybe somewhere such as below the challenger face, where they built superpark a few years back.  This eliminates the need for man made snow, a little.

4th- instead of wasting time and money with the cat to build multiple small jumps and a couple medium sized jumps. limit cat time to a select two jumps that are actually worth time and money. 

5th and most important of all.  Get events organized and bring some hype to big sky, the same lame comp's haven't changed in the last 5 years.  Skiing has progressed a ton since the first edition of RUST and that progression is know where seen on Big Skys event schedule.

Granted the pow is unbelievable.

i mean were talking about the resort that TURNED DOWN snowboard mag superpark... clearly hype isnt what they are looking for. and what do you mean park by challenger? like in between challenger and iron horse?

The run they want to move the park to is called Southern Comfort. It is probly the best run in all of Montana for a park. The sun would hit the landings and not the lips, its the perfect pitch, width and length. This run would allow Big Sky to make a top to bottom park with big, medium and small features all in one run without a super pipe. I believe this move would help park skiing in Montana. As it stands now Ambush is too steep and the super pipe is a waist of money. Swifty is too narrow and to short. The features are fun but really small and if that was the only park left most of us would have to go elsewhere for some decent sized features. My signature will be on that petition and if nothing is done about this my money will go elsewhere.

^ small correction: southern comfort is a lift, not a run.  there are a few runs on the lift, but they all pretty much have the same southern aspect.

so this was shot after the season ended, i believe with very little snowmaking involved.  tons of spots for natural tranny. imo best spot for sick jumps.

apparently last year Boyne saw shortfalls in alot of resorts, esp the midwest. The same is not true for Big Sky and some others (dont know bout Loon), but all the resorts are paying the price. I believe what the resort cuts is dependant on the mtn manager. So it varies for each resort. Let hope no parks anywhere get cut!

This makes me sad, I went to Big Sky this winter and it was life changing, the place is unbelievable. What everyone is saying about the pipe is true, a good park doesn't need a pipe/huge pipe. and what the poster above with the three things numbered out, I think you said they should focus on a small number of bug jumps, but if tehy just mantain big jumps kids will be intimidated and scared of the park and wont want to ski/board in teh park, I think smaller features are almost essentail for a park to survive.

Sorry for the double post but I just remembered that Moonlight Basin( resort next to Big Sky) was/is owned by the Leyman Brothers(sp?) and they had to make huge cuts and fired a lot of people, but they're park seemed to be mantained as it was in past years.

They don't have the best jumps in Montana. I hope that if they're taking a serious look at the terrain park that maybe they could think about consolidating to one or two BIG jumps, but focus on good speed and pop.

Agreed. Except they tried to make two big hips, and failed miserably. They still had a good jump but they should've just made more jumps instead of the hips....

yeah, all at the bottom of challenger over there, the only problem i see with that, is interfering with traffic between Moonlight and Big Sky, since thats the only way for the average skier to get back and forth.

I like your thinking but that might be pretty tough. He was born in Kalispell, rode Big Mountain (Whitefish) and then moved to Utah pretty young to do the freestyle thing. But if you can convince Tanner to get on board, more power to ya.

A word of advice to you all:

Resorts like to hear what you have to say. But they don't just want to hear cries of "don't get rid of my park!" -- that doesn't get anything done. They want to hear your suggestions, not shouts of dismay. So consider viable alternatives that would be a win-win situation for both the skiers and the resort. Then present your ideas to the resort in an organized fashion. Like I said, resorts love to hear what their skiers have to say. And I see this dialogue happening in this thread already, which is great to see -- keep it up.

boyne just overtook sunday river last season as well. probably not a coincidence, but, condition and terrain-wise, it was the worst season i've seen in a while. i find boyne to be a terrible company.
