I think religious stories can provide a fair amount of insight into the religion, just as historic fables and stories with morals can provide insight into the communities they came from. But I agree that debate over legitimacy requires vastly more context and knowledge than does insight into a certain community.

this is the bottom line.  armadavaJJ, your logic is like giving credit to the organizers of a pep rally for winning the championship game.  i don't care how many fireworks and how sick it was - the players were the only ones on the court.  prop 8 was passed by voting.  very simple.  californians went and voted.  most of them voted for prop 8.  simple.

I have to say I do have quite a few Mormon friends because I live in Utah and really its not too bad, I don't bother them about religion and neither do they to me. Its really no big deal because its their own fucking religion and choice to believe in what they believe in and i expect them to show me the same respect. Which is what you would expect of everyone right? Even though the mormon religion is weird at best, who cares? MInd your own business dude, you are very ignorant for making this post. Its really not that hard to live around a bunch of them because they are all just about the nicest people you'll ever meet.

everyone is looking at the prop 8 thing the wrong way. Its perfectly ok for religious institutions to campaign for their beliefs, they are people just like us. the problem here is that the mormons lied about their involvement, they gave 100 times as much money as they first claimed.

 As a religious institution they are exempt from many taxes and also do not often have to disclose their financial records. With this cover they can bribe politicians, and hide from the taxes they do have to pay.

Basically people are finding out the mormons lied behind the cover of religion while meddling in public affairs. Now, people are suspicious of other things they have done.

Hey, I am just going off what I have seen.  They look down on you  if your not one of them.  Like there better than everyone.  My buddy tried to play baseball in HS and the coach was mormon, they didnt play him as much cause he was not in there ward.  You think what you want to, I will think and express what I want to.  there not as great as you make them out to be.

Again, a hell of alot of other people are and were trying to do that. I know theres a lot of fucked up stuff about the mormons and what they've done. and I agree they should learn a lesson about what they've done, but I was talking about the normal mormon person doesnt deserve to be talked shit about that is all, thats like going on about how all hindu people are pissing you off or whatever. Its ignorant!

I've dealt with that shit too, time and time again. but still all i'm saying is to show respect to other people! At least with what I've seen, as long as I show that respect to my mormon friends or to anyone they show the same respect to me.

Well everyone at my school is that way, including my friends. I have to say that I've moved a lot of different places in my life. Utah being the most recent. I fucking love it here because no one is rude. Like I would walk home from my old school and get flipped off from the kids on the bus. And even when people here and Utah are pissed off at me they don't do that shit

That's just not true. They are supposed to devote a year of their life to pushing their beliefs on you. They won't physically force you to believe but they will do anything short of that. They mostly convince you to let them help you so you later feel like you owe them.

Most missionaries are taught to offer help with chores to get in the door of a prospective convert. This sounds like a nice thing to do but its deception. Politicians used to hand out turkeys during thanksgiving in the 1920s. they would then go around and remind all the families who accepted a turkey that they owed the politician a vote. or like when you order girls gone wild and they keep sending you DVDs and expect you to pay for them hahaha.

 i identify most closely with the tenents of pastafarianism, but i feel that all organized religion is ridiculous on many levels.

however the impact religion has had on societal control and the development of folkways and mores throughout human existance can not be denied.
