To the OP: In my opinion, the just say no campaign is severely flawed. Teens by nature are rebellious, so if you tell them to say no, it won't work. Ideally, you use incentives -- like WDFY/IDFY (WA/ID Drug Free Youth). You get discounts at places and stuff. I really only joined that because I have no interest in weed or drugs and I wanted $4 footlongs at Subway and a pretty good discount at a local ski shop, along with a slew of other deals.

It's a Washington/Idaho voluntary thing. Basically random drug testing throughout the school year. I was only tested once. You can drop out anytime, and your school doesn't get notified if you fail a drug test. You get a membership card that you can show to certain local retailers and you can get discounts and stuff. Like I said, I really only joined for $4 footlongs at Subway and discounts at a local ski shop.

Just telling kids to say no to drugs isn't enough, telling kids the facts about drugs to me seems like a better way to keep people from doing drugs. Then again for kids (like 10 year olds) mindless mantras like Just Say No may be a good method. I think the answer is continuous drug education that starts off simple and clear, and becomes more complex and fair as kids grow older.

i cant say that any add on tv or my teachers telling me not to do drugs has had any impact on my life at all. i feel like i would be missing out if i had never smoked weed or done shrooms, im not particularly proud that ive done MDMA as much as i have but i havnt had any negative effects from drugs except being lazy back when i was a stoner.
no real point to that but i dont think drugs are a bad thing unless you really abuse them

it really didnt help me either.  when i was in 5th grade when they started all that crap i had no idea what any of it was, but once i knew i decided it looked fun. im not a super heavy smoker but ive still done it so guess DARE failed me.

exactly. if anything the program introduced me to thinking about drugs.

I rememberI went to a DARE hockey camp when I was young and I remember it sucked because after lunch we had like a 2 hour lecture on how drugs are bad. and I had no idea what they were talking about haha

"If you get really drunk, you should expect to find your piss in places where it shouldn't be"

Then they should show sketched out meth heads, and all kinds of real-life footage of people twitching and dying.

I wish I could go back in time and see what they told me about weed.

at my school DARE was such a failure not only because the program sucked so hard but also because the people who presented it were basically loser cops who got demoted and were required to. Basically they made people want to do drugs because of how annoying they were, along with the fact that the program sucks.

DARE fails so hard, it was taken out of my small private school after a few years because the percentage of kids doing drugs stayed the same and it was basically just a way for kids to know drugs were out there...before DARE I didn´t know what pot was, it might have been more useful in 7 or 8th grade.

Fuck yes!...i mean...since its the summer i get ripped and/ or drunk like every night lol, but i still respect a good iced tea. one might even say i'm a conniseur. and i wouldnt say those ads did anything for me, i just chose to start in gr.10(which is relatively late for kids where im from) because it looked fun. but the choice to not do it, and eventually, to do it was because of me, not some ad.

Yeah, and pretty much everything my parents/teachers have told me.  I've never smoked/done drugs and I'm pretty satisfied with that.  Seems like such a waste of money, and you can end up in some deep shit, the consequences of me getting caught would be horrendous too, so I just stay away from it.  I save my money and don't risk missing a year of skiing.

The guy who came in to talk to our class to talk about drugs basically said that he understood that we were going to experiment with things. He then told us to be careful when doing drugs.

The MADD presentations were pretty effective though. Step be step description of how we would die and how much it hurt if we got in a car crash. Then a bunch of photos and stories. I don't think I'll ever drive if I'm drunk.

I started smoking weed out of curiousity of how it would affect me and for the experience. It is not even close to as harmful as they make it seem. But it can be time consuming and cost you a lot of money if it ends up being something you do regularly. I stopped smoking a month or so ago to save me money and help me lose a little weight not because i was convinced it was a bad thing. But to the OP no i dont think D.A.R.E worked/works at all, its a persons own decision and at some point for i think almost everyone they will try it out whether its once or a long term thing.

I forgot to state my oppinion. i was to busy calling out runescape-jibba.

I feel it is a flawed campaign like the guy from idaho said, totaly agree. I feel that it is another propaganda campaign that will only work on religious freaks and the innocent. It isn't really aimed at teenagers but more towards the young to remind them of the dangers of a extremely safe plant. All they are targeting is cannabis use.
