So an NY style pizza is really an Italian style pizza, or just pizza? I'm from sweden, and even though we have some strange topping combos we still have that thin crispy crust of a real pizza. Didn't like the thick, doughy pizza I've had on your side of the pond.
Might sound cliché but the best pizza I've ever had was in Italy, you know you are eating a good pizza when you don't need any other toppings than tomato sauce, real buffalo mozzarella and some basil. If you need anything else, it would be a few slices of prosciutto crudo di parma.
Random google picture of a good looking margherita.
Without sounding like a douche, some of you might wonder why the cheese isn't all over. It's because real mozzarella often come in small balls, that you tare parts from since you can't use a grater since the cheese would only fall apart. The mozzarella used at pizza places is usually not real and/or fresh mozzarella.
If you go to like say, Rome, it is hard to find a good pizza since most of the places focus on tourists that think that it is a good pizza just because they are in italy. In fact, I don't think there is anywhere else with that many bad restaurants as Rome has. Not saying that they don't have a lot of good ones as well. The best pizza is said to be found in Napoli, but I haven't been there yet. Mostly because it is a shady area with a lot of corruption and involvement from the Camorra (mafia). But the best pizza I've had was in a little town in the region Umbria. The town has like 4 restaurants, and one of them had this amazing pizza.
Haha, didn't mean to wright a book but I got so fired up. Pizza truly can be the best dish in the world, and hopefully this post made someone psyched to find that perfect pizza. I think that it is so fascinating with dishes that doesn't need that many ingredients, as long as it is fresh ones and good ones. It's like finding the perfect burger. When the meat is so good and juicy you don't need anything else than the patty, buns and a slice of cheese.
Well shit, I might have to book myself a ticket to Italy right now..
