anyone else watching the US actually beating Spain?
i hate soccer but i'm watching it anyway

but have you notice that soccer players never score like its no big deal? baseball players will hit a bomb, jog with their head down and take a seat. soccer players feel the need to strip down and run into the stands and make a scene. Soccer players are The Antibang...

All this arguing is silly as it comes down to one simple thing.......at the end of the day do you play/have played the sport?

If you've ever played soccer you'll realize why games are still exciting even if the final score is 1-0.  Creativity, flicks, brilliant runs, emotion, tactics and more all keep a 90 minute game exciting even if the teams aren't great.

The same can be said about many other sports but the point being is soccer is the world's most popular sport because its the one the most people play.  As such, they understand whats happening and why its important even when players aren't scoring.

your being an idiot. although lacrosse is my favorite sport there isnt nearly as much running in lax than soccer. attack doesnt run much and same with defernse. middies run but only for 2 minutes. soccer is constant running for a whole game. and dont be an idiot acting like soccer is boring. its the most popular sport in the world and your probably to stupid to understand it. and by the way, i dont play soccer.

and what the fuck does fan attendance have to do with anything? i fucking hate that argument. im sorry lacrosse isn't as nationally/internationally recognized as other sports? It's fairly new compared to any other sport. but it was even a topic on an english regents exam, write a letter to your school trying to get lacrosse added, and use the graphs that show how lacrosse has grown almost 400% in some parts of the US. Its the fastest growing sport at the moment. and not to be racist at all, but ones black people start playing, its going to take off like you wouldnt believe. and pro lacrosse is not that great, its all about college. Lacrosse players dont for the big money like football and baseball and soccer players, they play for the love of the sport. pro players make like $1200 a game, the do not even make enough money to live off of, unlike your precious david beckham who could probably support 50+ families on his salary

its supply and demand dude. no one cares enough about lax to pay ppl millions of dollars. in a competitive club soccer match or international match the average midfielder will run 6-7 miles which I highly doubt a lax player even touches. also it is impossible for a player to sprint 75% of the time in any game let alone a lax game so that stat is completely wrong. you also don't play soccer so you don't understand anything about what it takes to score goals or the build up and precise passing necessary. until then you will never appreciate it like the rest of the world does. my 2 cents

ok but soccer players are built to run like that, obviously if you cant run like that you wont play pro soccer. and its a lot of jogging, lacrosse players sprint. I know attack and defense get their breaks, but when the ball is on their side of the field, they are sprinting the entire time.

and i seriously think soccer is boring, how does that make me an idiot? i think basketball is boring too, unless its like lebron making his shot with .4 seconds to win the game, otherwise its running back and fourth

and what do you mean i dont understand soccer? i played soccer, i understand it completely, its very similar to lacrosse to infact, except i just find it terribly boring. not as bad as baseball though

dude, ymca soccer and U19 soccer against the best teams of every state in the U.S. is a lot different, it is the opposite of slow, if you arent on your toes and thinking and observing the situation you will lose. Football you stop after every play and all you have to think about is your specific instructions, run this way block this guy, get the running back where he needs to go (not saying that is easy) but in soccer you dont have time to pause and get everyone on the same page and make plans and give instructions, everyone needs to know where everyone else is, where they are going, where the ball is, where you need to go, how you can get open, where the defenders are, etc. And to the part where you said its not exciting, if you understand the game and how it is played the entire game is intense. and when you are comparing sports dont be ignorant as fuck, i mean really, just a random kick doesnt win a game, first you have to beat your defender, get the ball, shield it from another defender, beat him, and then place a ball, with your foot in the upper or lower corners of the goal from 18 yards. It isnt easy i promise, so next time you hate on soccer think how much you would hate it if someone was like, in football all you have to do is catch a ball. all sports are extremely difficult at a pro level so dont hate. I respect football players and you need to respect soccer. If you arent a pro soccer player you cant say its easy. and dude, lacrosse and soccer are like the same, the only difference is field size, goal size, and you play with a stick, strategy and movement and teamwork are all comparable. so dude dont be hatin

i know how supply and demand works, and im saying that in a couple years, lacrosse will be huge with the rate its increasing. and why is it impossible to springt 75% of the time? i dont even understand why you said that...

and i did play soccer, and i quit because i didnt like it as much as the other sports i was playing, so i know lots about it, so donn't tell me i don't know anything....

But in football, its more than just running a ply and following assignments. You stop and have a short amount of time to pick the right play that will create the best outcome. and these plays have to be perfected in the week before the game, and you have to adjust your entire offense and defense to your opponent. When you say hike, you just just run, you have the quarterback has to decided in like 2 seconds whether to throw or hand it off or run it, all by surveying the entire field. then the running backs/recievers have to do this too, decided whether to block or get open. offenders have to block their guy, who could make any move he wants. defensive backs have to read plays and adjust. this is all within like 2 seconds time, if your not thinking on your toes your fucked.
In soccer, you can slow the ball down and call out a play and allow people to setup and calibrate and everything. I respect soccer players, i just dont really respect soccer.
and yeah, lacrosse and soccer as similar, yet so different at the same time

yea lacrosse is becoming more popular but not nearly like soccer is. i would say that lax is as popular as soccer was in the late 80s so there is a long way to go. as of a week ago, espn bought the rights to 45 english premier league games next season after setanta shit the bed and has the rights to all of the champions league games so obviously soccer is on the verge of becoming a HUGE sport in the US. i cant remember the last time I've ever seen pro lax on any channel. if you dont think that soccer is entertaining then you are entitled to your own preferences.

on another note, you cite pro football as being more entertaining. from my perspective, the game of football is 85% strength and 15% skill whereas soccer is almost the opposite. if i wanted to watch strength then id flip to mma. SKILL is more entertaining than how some fat 350 pound lineman is better at pushing another 350 pound piece of meat. this is not to take away from the qb's, rb's and wr's in the game

No way, soccer is already huge, lacrosse is GROWING so much faster than soccer and eventually will be huge. Lacrosse is on ESPNU and CSN (fox college sports network i think?), and only the big college games are on normal ESPN/2. there are also like 12 pro games a season on normal ESPN/2.

from your perspective, what prospective is that? its takes a lot of strength and a ton of skill to play football. Yeah you need to be able to bench like 500+ lbs to play offensive line, but its not like pushing around a bar, the guy your defending is not just going to let you push him, there is tactic to it. and there is pulling and hitting a extremely athletic linebacker too. Running backs/receivers need to be fast as fuck, while also strong, and extremely agile. they have to dodge so many people, look at the field for openings and where to run for the best result. quarterbacks have to know sooo much different shit, and be quick and agile and be able to place a ball perfectly, that takes sooo much talent, especiallly when 11 guys want to kill you.

dude the reason they go so nuts is because you only score probly one goal a game, so it all just builds up during the time your trying to score, then everyone erupts when they score. in baseball like ten runs are scored in an average game.

Honestly I've read everything you have to say and you're still either an outright idiot or just ignorant beyond imagination.

With my meanness out of the way. Please answer the question I asked you a while back, when is the last time you played soccer and at what level? Honestly it sounds like you played either in elementary or middle school and played for a shitty team.

Anyway, all of your arguments why football are so great work with soccer. You say you only have a few short seconds to call a play in football. Guess what? You don't get a timeout to call your plays in soccer. You have to constantly be communicating with your players verbally and non-verbally to set up plays on the fly. Players in soccer perfect their "plays" for the game throughout the week also. They just don't get a pep-talk from their coach every couple of minutes.

And since when does a team actually score from slowing the game down in soccer? Seriously, watch a game and realize that most goals are scored from absolute brilliant maneuvers that happen in an instant. Slowing down a game gives the players time to regroup and plan an attack. Much like a time-out in football, except we still have to watch out for the opposing team when we regroup. Also counter-attacks are incredibly important in soccer which football really can't do because you get a break every possession.

I'm not bashing football either. I'm just trying to point out how wrong you are. How very wrong. I like football and most other sports as well. But I'm smart enough to realize you can't compare apples to oranges which you are trying so desperately to do.

Honestly I still don't know who the hell you think you are to completely bash a sport like this when every argument you make doesn't work.

i tell ya there is not greater feeling like taking the ball through 5 ot 6 people and your 1v1 with the keeper, and then you just put it in the upper 90.  To be honest i played keeper all my life, and my last game of my season i decided i wanted to play the field.  I took the ball all the way from sweeper, up to the 18 and scored.  it was the greatest feeling in the world, i would say its better then sex!  you just get so so excited, and something takes over and you go crazy.  thats why football(soccer) celebrations are so crazy.

last time i played was middle school so like 4 or 5 years ago. but thats doesnt mean shit, the kid i was playing with now happen to be on the best highschool teams in the state so it was still competitive then. when was the last time you players real tackle orgnaized football?

i know you dont have a time out to call in soccer, and i know you dont score goals walking around, thats not what i said, you didnt read that right. but you can slow the ball down, just keep posestion of it a dont attack while getting things set up, we do it in lacrosse all the time. and you think the time inbetween plays in football is long, buts its not. you sprting back to a huddle and call a play and get right to it, its not like you sit there and converse... and you have to constantly communicate in football, on the fly, in the 2 or 3 seconds you have before the ball is snapped, and during the short time of the play. and what do you mean pep talk? half time, just like in soccer, is the only real break we get, timeouts arent like orange slices and gatoraid time...

if you know the practice and planning behind a single play in football, you would be amazed too. its a fucking syncronized sort of art behind a football play, one person and the whole thing falls apart. all you see if a lineman pushing and a running back running, but its sooooo much more than that.

im not bashing soccer, im just saying i think there are better sports and i find it boring. except fifa on xbox, thats a fun game.

the best celebration i've ever seen in a soccer match was a player who had recently returned from a suspension for cocaine use.

the opposing fans were taunting him as they do, and then he scored a goal.

to shut everyone up he ran to the end line in front of the other clubs supporters, got on his hands and knees, put his head down and took a rip of the goal line.

Dubsman35, your obvious argumentative flaw is that you claim to know about soccer from playing in the youth league. This is the biggest load of bull ever, because none of the exciting elements are present at that level. When you're that young you don't play real soccer. Like many people in this thread have already said (but you haven't accepted yet), when you play in the older, more competitive leagues, new dimensions in the game start to appear. These are what makes soccer the world's most popular sport, along with the fact that it's extremely cheap and accessible. You don't get the real thing, with all the excitement, suspense, and intensity when you play youth soccer; nobody has any ball control and you still haven't filtered out all the kids who won't pursue the sport (just about everyone plays soccer when they are that age). Please revise your argument because the fact that you tried soccer amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

not really...set pieces just happen to be the only ones where its literally set up in a "you go here, i'll go here, and the ball will be sent right here" manner.

i play as a keeper, and trust me, there's always something going on. They aren't exactly plays like in american football, but thats because the game is less predictable, but there are definitely still organized efforts. Hell, just playing as keeper you spend most of your time coordinating and organizing just your defensive line which takes a fair bit of practice and ability.

yeah i understand, I play soccer at a high level year round and have a large knowledge for the game. that post was pretty dumb on my part, and as I was just getting sicks of dubsmans posts I just wanted to shut him up for a minute. I play center mid. for my team and I am constantly making sure people are picking up marks on the fly, telling people where to make their runs, and when the ball should be played.
