Iran vs US

The House recently passed a non-binding resolution in support of the protesters in Iran who have been protesting the  results of the recent election there.

My question is this, why does the house support Iranian protesters when their rights are abused but completely ignore it when American citizens rights are abused while protesting here in America. Case and point the near barbaric treatment of protesters and the media during the Republican National Convention in Minnesota in 2008.

Why are the so concerned with the freedoms of Iranians when they are actively trying to suppress the freedoms of their own citizens?

Barbaric would refer to outside the constrains of the constitution in my mind, maybe like upwards of 30 journalists who had committed no crimes who were working for legitimate news organizations being arrested. Silencing media and imprisoning innocent journalists for political reasons is barbaric in my book.

Yeah, there were protesters kicking and hitting cops, and the cops didnt respond back with any force. Completely barbaric.

Do you really think that the cops didn't respond with force? This is a quote from a Huffington Post article about the protests.

"By the time I was able to show my press badge to get past the line of armed guards, two protesters were face down on the street with their hands tied behind their back, and another two were sitting against a brick wall. About a dozen police officers, some in riot gear, waited with them until an ambulance arrived. Up and down the streets -- virtually deserted except for media -- groups of other uniformed officers, presumably on stand-by, waited to learn what was next."

Why were the protesters laying in the street while surrounded by cops waiting for ambulances to arrive? The protesters certainly didn't hurt themselves to the point where they would be needed to be hospitalized.

And does that sound like a scene from a country that is free? City streets empty except for police?

I'm Iranian myself so im real fucking biased but in opposition of ahmadinejad and everything he has done to the country and same with the ayatollah. my family was fucked in the iranian revolution so if the US helps Iran, their government can become what it used to be-a non militant, peaceful country.

i havent watched any of king obama's speeches or even a whole lot of CNN for that matter my dad has just been updating me on whats been going on.

so really im not trying to argue with you here for once just trynna tell you why it would be beneficial to me and my bias you can say whatever you want i dont care

word... i didnt realize you had a horse in the race...

still IMO we dont need to be starting another war, and it would seem using the rational of the people are oppressed (which is horrible) then Irac was perfectly justifiable under those terms.... as we as a war in Burma, any number of places.......

and yeah i wasnt trying to argue with ya, it just seemed very out of place on NS for someone to be making some agressive type posts in terms of foreign policy, so my interest was peaked.

I rarely agree with Olbermann but if you wanted to boil my view of this conflict down to a video clip that would be it. Non interventionism is the only way to go.

question for Alex,

with the history of the US's intervention in Iranian politics, do you think that we could really have a positive impact? I mean is it possible for the US to provide true aid without (overtly) pursuing US interests? And even if we could really aid Musavi's movement, how do we foster a positive perception of the US with the rest of the population?

IMO we've already meddled in the past and it'll be difficult for anyone to trust US intervention while recalling this history.

I guess what my question boils down to is, whats your take on the appropriate approach, and what's the most significant risk attached?

have you seen the SNL mockery of him.. its so spot on its hilarious...


my take, the US does not need to be in the business of validating foreign countries elections... however, lets say our country was in harms way by actions iran might or might not be taking. like Israel for instance. then i will hold by my belief that we can and in some cases should act proactivly to protect ourselvs...
