What else do i need to edit HD?

k so i have a windows xp dell desktop. right now i'm running 6.5gb of RAM, 3.00 GHZ processer, and it still runs kinda choppy when editing the video from hd camera whichs films at 30 frames/sec on adobe premiere elements 7. but when i edit the video from my friends camera which runs at 60 frames/second it says i've run out of system memory then it terminates the program.

i have room for 2 more gigs of ram, but i'm thinking even with that it wont change it. i was wondering if i need to upgrade my video card on my computer, i dont know what it is but i'm sure its nothing special.

Something else is going on, you have plenty of speed for HD, im running a 2.33GHZ duo with 3gb of ram and i run 60p in final cut all day long.

i always thought you needed like 3 GHZ processor and 4 or 6 gb of ram to run final cut, the obvious solution is to get a macbook pro but that costs alot of cash

yeah you may have 6.5 gb or w/e but you may actually be limiting the usage. what happens is the processing speed or what ever the number is on it (6500rpm or w/e) is limited to the lowest one of all the ram in the computer. so if you have 5gb that are way higher than 1.5 gb then you will be running at the lowest speed of the 1.5gb. Its kinda like you can only hike so fast in a larger group because there is always someone that slows it down. you shouldn't have problems.

i know in some programs you can limit the amount of ram allocated to that program. maybe the default is low, so check out the settings and see if you can give the program more ram to work with.

i have nothing backing me up except the word of someone here. but he said xp can only deal with up to 3gb of ram.

that being said even with 3 you should be golden. so something is going wrong.

are you serious? i put probably 200 some dallars into that memory, and it still won't work.

anyone want to donae too the "Help Brett Buy A Macbook Pro Cause"?

On a completely different note, if you're recording HD onto tapes (HDV) you need to capture with an HD camcorder...

YEP, at least with xp..
vista supports 4gb without 64 bit version

ok, if you're running xp, i'm going to take a gander and guess that you're running a pentium 4.  it's true that xp can only take advantage of so much ram, so that's kind of a problem for you.  and it makes sense that editing is running pretty slow on your computer because most pentium 4s are single core, unless you have the extreme edition, so chances are that you're going to have to get a new video card if you want better performance for video editing.

to answer to the original question..

Are you sure you aren't running out of hard disk space somewhere?

I'm pretty sure Adobe Premiere is limited to 32-bit and thus limited to 4 Gb of RAM.

Also, changing your video card will only have a marginal influence in current editing software.

If you are serious about HD editing, you should consider switching to Mac.

If you're running an intel chip, there's a very good chance you can run the OS X iPC distro. You might need a few ktext hacks (you'll know what I mean if you research the topic).

Check this site: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page and scroll down to hardware. Look under the 10.5.6 version instead of 10.5.7. Most people get 10.5.6 running, then run software update to get 10.5.7.
