Obsethed's In The Park...

Coming from Australia I rarely get to ski deep pow, but come December i'm heading to Japan for 3 months. Before I head to Japan though i'm spending 2 1/2 months living at the snow in Australia, where i'll be skiing 80% park and 20% groom runs.

I've been looking at Pipe Cleaners or Obsethed's as a do-it-all ski to have in Aus as well as overseas, but can't decide which. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy two pairs.

I'm leaning toward the K2's as they'll handle the deep stuff, but really don't know how they'll go in the park.

Any recommendations on which I should go for?

They're super fun in the park. The pretty much kill everything except heavy crud due to the med/soft flex.

When I did a season in whistler I had both the seths and invaders. Compared to the invaders in the, I didn't like the seths in the park - bit too heavy and slow to manoeuvre on. But that would have been because invaders are at the extreme of lightness, and coz im not a superstar in the park.

If i were you, get the pipecleaners in aus, sell em on ebay then fund your purchase of the seths for japan.

some pretty good twin tips up on Aus ebay at the moment, should check em out...

It would be easier if you posted a little more information about how much park and pow you're going to ski and how good you are and any more relevant info.

I had exactly the same problem when i went to do a season. I think this years kung fujas are the perfet ski for what you want. With the schizo binding you can't go worng however if you can afford to buy them in Aus then you can probs afford to buy two pairs of skis. If you only have the choice between these 2 skis i would get the pipecleaners and take them over to Japan then check out what skis are on offer over there and maybe look into getting another pair then.

i have the OBSETHEDS and i dont think i have ever loved a ski more. they are awesome on the gromers in the powder and pretty much everywhere. if i could only have one ski this would be it. i did take them threw the park some and found that they are alot heavier than my park ski so lighter bindings would be a must and i did not try and rails with them just a box or two and some jumps. but if your looking to just slay what you ride this is the ski for you.

I'm In the same boat as you. I ski perisher but going to fernie and japan at end of year. I've been looking  at the Kung fujas. For what your doing they sound good

Solid advice.

Info: In Australia we don't get powder. And when we do it's not like European, American, Canadian or Asian pow...it's thick and wet. So i'm guessing my 2 1/2 months skiing this season in Thredbo will be spent 80% in the park, and 20% skiing the groom runs the resort has.

When I go to Japan in December for 3 months i'll probably be skiing non-stop powder, as, well, y'know, Japan has the stuff.

My skiing ability is, I would say, advanced. There's rarely a jump or rail in Australia I won't hit. 360ing 40 foot tables is about where I draw the line though, if that gives you an idea of my ability.

I'm 170cm tall, weigh 65kg, or about 140 pounds, and have been skiing for 9 years.

I'm doubting my ability to purchase the Kung Fujas' due to a lack of funds, but can get new Pipe Cleaners or Obsethed's for around the same price as each other.

I'll probably take your advice and get the PC's, take them to Japan and just see what happens. If the PC's are light and sweet for jumps and rails i'd prefer them over a heavier ski that will eventually help me ski pow.

Glad i could help.. I ended up getting the 90 under foot line blend a couple of years back. I really loved it as a one ski quiver. I would look for an all mountain type twin tip probably between 90-95 and mount it a little back from centre closer to free ride. They'll be sweet in the park and they'll be fine in the pow. if you could get the ARV, Blend, kung fujas, bridge thgat would be ideal.

kung fujas with skitzaphrentic bindings. the setup is a bit pricey bit eith the adjustable mount system you will effectively kill it in the park or the powder.

i tried out obsetheds in the park and they were sick my only problems were that they could have used a
little more width in the tails for landing switch but that could probably have been solved by mounting them more forward than what they were at

Im just saying,
i havn't ever heard how they work in pow but from what i've heard,
reno rockers.
There rockerd so you will float in pow,
and they have a 92 waist.
There fairly decent on groomers and the most fun ski in park.
Once you get used to them though they will feel normal on groomers (as i've heard)
But theyer good for jumps under 60 and there so sick on rails.
So maybe consider them.
(they are cheaper then pipecleaners. Atleast in Canada)

I've got some.

They are a totally unique ski, but a LOT of fun. Very surfy, and absolute noodles because of the rocker. They have the stability to take on jumps too though. I personally wouldn't go over 40 with themn, but thats b/c I'm a pussy

obsetheds would be sick, but i would go for something like the last years kung fujas, still wide, but lighter and better for rails then the obsetheds, but if your looking for rocker, then chec the new fujas and the obseths, or i would get line blends/or bacons

Personally, if you are going to be spending 80% of your time in the park, DO NOT get Seths.  Yes, you will get used to them and you will do fine in the park.  But if you skied those a few runs in the park, then skied a few runs on a ski like the Pipe Cleaner as you mentioned, you would hate the Seths.  Again they will suffice, but isn't what they are meant for.  I think the advice of buying a pair and selling them in a few months was the best given so far.  Snag some park specific skis, or an all-mountain ski that does pretty well in the park.  Top choice for your conditons for me would be the anthem - killer park ski with extra width, great sidecut for groomed runs, and will do okay on your few pow days.  They are also pretty cheap compared to most skis.  Then sell them and pick up a pair of Seths for your Japan adventures.

next years kung fujas' would be a really good ski to take a look at. K2 has given them rocker, from what it looked like it was pretty similar to the rocker on this years obsetheds. they are also 10mm skinnier under foot so they would be a little more managable in the park. they sound like theyr gonna be a really sick ski to rip around on.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've decided to get Pipe Cleaners. Way off what everyone has been suggesting, reason being though, in Aus it's super hard to find skis like Line Blend's, Kung Fujas', etc, etc. I think when I head to Japan i'll either sell them and buy something new, or hang onto them and see what I can pick up over there for pow. My local ski shop has '09 Pipe Cleaners relatively cheap, so i'm hoping they suit well in the park (i'm sure they will).

As I said, thanks for all the suggestions.

i love mine in the park, i woulda gone with the seths. oh well!

you will still be happy with the cleaners, from what i hear; they are a pretty sweet park ski.

im the opposite,I think you made the right choice and I have skied 50+ days on Obsetheds. I ski whistler and love them there as an all-around ski but in aus which I gather is similar to nz (where I spent a season) I would want the Pcleaners.

In fact next season Im really thinking of going with 181 Pcleaners as my park skis. The obsethed are good, but they lack pop, dont hold well on ice and are heavy as fuck even with some of the lightest bindings out there (salomon drivers).

Unfortunately the 1 ski quiver is but a myth and reallly 2 pairs is the best, one for park, one for pow. Just buy a double fall-line/concourse or armada anchorage bag and you'll be sweet probably no need for excess baggage charges even. Buy both.
