Red = yellow = purple = green = blue?

We are born.
We see things. All sorts of crazy things.
We go to school for the first time.
What do they teach us? Colors.
"This apple is red. This sun is yellow."
We match what we see with the name we have been given.

What if, we all saw yellow as a different visual representation as everybody else?
What I see as red might be purple to you, but you don't know any better because there's no way for you to see what I see.
We are seeing the same object, but perhaps for some girl, the object is covered in horizontal stripes.
She calls those stripes "red" because she matches those stripes with the word "red".
She assumes that everybody sees this so-called "red" as horizontal stripes.

Each individual human might have a completly different "personal color spectrum" than every other person on this Earth.


Think about it...

life is already formed on perception. how life began, where it began, who made it, what is right, or wrong, who is powerful, or weak, body vs image. standards of beauty. personal preference of sports, flowers, images, movies, hobbies, art, clothing, fashion, etc

variety is the spice of life! cue cheese.

everyone is different, and most people dont see same colors in the same shades :P

This must have been posted about 1000 times. Im pretty sure its actually not the case if you look into it scientifically... theres a way to know what colours people can see and whatnot... just like we know that some animals only see in the red/green spectrum and some only see in the blue spectrum and some only see in the dark etc. etc....
im pretty sure we all see the same colours... maybe someone who knows more about eye biology could help me out here?

no, the cones and rods your eyes receive red, green, and blue, EVERYONE does, and then you see other variations of those colors from there. its scientifically proven. otherwise your color blind or part of the Westboro Baptist church

My cousin was pushin this theory on me a little while ago. Personally I don't enjoy thinking about it. It has no answer really and doesn't matter. It's a thinker for sure though.

everyone sees all colors the same and it is proven scientifically. have you ever heard of a thing called the visible spectrum? to lazy to type but here is wikipedia

The visible spectrum is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to (can be detected by) the human eye. Electromagnetic radiation in this range of wavelengths is called visible light or simply light. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 380 to 750 nm.[1] In terms of frequency, this corresponds to a band in the vicinity of 790–400 terahertz. A light-adapted eye generally has its maximum sensitivity at around 555 nm (540 THz), in the green region of the optical spectrum (see: luminosity function). The spectrum does not, however, contain all the colors that the human eyes and brain can distinguish. Unsaturated colors such as pink, and purple colors such as magenta are absent, for example, because they can only be made by a mix of multiple wavelengths.

objects have a color because they reflect light a different wavelengths as explained above. so red does not equal yellow purple green and blue.

right, and x amount of wavelength gives out a certain color, like blue is 445 nm, but who says that what everyone sees as 445nm is the same? It is impossible to prove.

Sure, scientifically it puts out the same "color" but what if someone else's brain perceives that color differently? Like people have said, no way to prove it, but just because there is a "visible spectrum" doesn't mean it isn't backwards for someone else, but yet completely normal to them.

I have thought about this before, maybe even made a thread on it...but yeah it is very possible. even when you look at the physics of it and how colours work, it is still a possibilty since it all comes down to when the light enters the eye, and transmits to the brain.

iv thought about this before... but what bugs me about the idea is bright colors and dark colors. and how in shadows its harder to see the diff colors sometimes and just when it comes to stuff like that. and how two colors can look very very similar, what are the chances everyone's spectrum's would have the same two colors looking almost the same? and so many people agreeing that two colors work really well together?
thats just what has bugged me about the idea.

i get what youre saying.  youre saying that we all se the same colors, but what if we labeled them differently.  like, i see a red ball, and know its red, but if some other person was taught that what i perceived as "red" was their blue. 

the flaw is that we all have common, unifying objects that bring eachothers spectrums together.  for example, if i went into a room and said "the sky is blue", everyone would agree.  in the situation described above, everyone would disagree and say "no way, dude, its definitely (insert their perspective)". 

Its a really interesting theory, but it has huge faults.  i spent a lot of time sitting up at like 1 in the morning thinking about this exact same subject.

Pretty much putting a name to something we precieve or see does not truly do antyig except make it easier to communicate to others.  Labeling and giving names to things is mainly just ised for communicating with others so they understand what you see.

ok for the brain argument this is from my art background... almost  everyone know about the warm/cool color combinations and the color wheel. the warm colors all flow together and it makes sense. cool colors  purple, blue, green part of the color wheel and the warm colors red orange and yellow side of the wheel. and they all tend to go together and also how certain color combinations work and others dont. and with the color wheel how when you mix red+blue you get purple and it is a noticable blend between the two colors. i know this is no physical proof and there is no way to prove it but it makes sense and it hase been agreeable throuout time

because the rods and cones in EVERYONES eyes recieve these colors the same ways, so we do all see 445nm as blue

i think about this all the time, a catholic preschool in kansas could tell the kids that a carrot is blue and it doesn't mean that the carrot is not blue it's just that we perceive it to be blue because that's the generally accepted truth. the color spectrum still shows all the colors so they are different we just are taught which objects are associated with certain colors that conforms to the generally accepted knowledge. we can take a carrot and match it with its color on the spectrum but that name could be anything, we could say that this carrot is gay and that could describe the color, it's not that all colors equal eachother it's simply that our names for them rely on everyone learning the same thing, just like vocabulary, that the word carrot is a vegetable and not a homosexual, but someone could easily be taught otherwise

yes we see shit all the same because we were taught that way, but if everyone had to figure it out on their own or if everyone was taught something different then we would get into massive arguments. think about more complex issues than colors that we view as concrete, like string theory or anything, everyone sees it differently but the exact same things are laid out in front of us, it's just how we interpret them and how we're taught to interpret them

i think teaching and generally accepted knowledge play massive roles in all of this

you would grow up with whatever color the sky appears to you connected to the word blue. there could be twelve different people in a room one sees the sky as what another would think is red or what another would think as white etc but everyone in the room would have learned that that color to them is connected to the word blue.
