whats the best skiing in montana? im looking for powder and big mountains, also whens a good time to go? ive never been to montana before, so anything would be nice to know. plus any killer deals, thanks a lot...

come to big sky in late january/ early february.  the mountain is big, and there should be some nice pow by that point in the season.  i dont know about any "deals" though, unfortunately. 

or big mountain.  havent been, but i hear nothing but good stuff about it. 

if you are in bozeman and bridger bowl gets one of their classic, 20 + inch days, it would be worth it to ski there for a day.  if they dont have any fresh, i would not waste my time there.

big mountain is always a good choice up in whitefish. but bozeman is the best you have bridger bowl, bigsky and moonlight basin all of which are uncrowded and after the new year, round febuary usaly are loaded with awesome days. plus there is lots of back country to be hike and skied.

bridger bowl is definitely not uncrowded. i love the mountain on a pow day but if you get there after a dump be prepared to wait, then hike, then get face shots, then wait soem more.

The snow in Bozeman usually hits harder after January, and if your going to hit Bridger Bowl you'll NEED a Avy Becon to ski any of the "Ridge" terrain (as in its required or they yank your pass) or the new terrain under the slushmans lift (http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145299&highlight=bridger+bowl). 

I would recommend Big Sky however on the weekends.  Its less crowded, is a much bigger resort has a park and some nar terrain.  Just watch out for rocks, and be ready for a core shot if you don't watch for the rock bands.  My recommendation on a pow day is to only ski where there are already tracks and you should be fine.  The locals know where the rocks lurk.

this is excellent advice.  if there is an area with no tracks through it, there is usually a damn good reason for it

 to big mtn during a weekday.  it's nearly empty, there is lots of fresh snow, and if you find a local you're in for some awesome skiing.  Big sky sort of blows,  too many rocks, tourists, and park rats.

I agree with your Big Mtn statement but you're way off on Big Sky.

While there are certainly a good number of tourists, there are so many lifts that once you get off of the main two lifts you usually never have to wait in line. Even the two main lifts have a very very short wait. Most of the tourists are sitting around at the bottom of the lifts or eating and drinking in the mountain mall. Yes there are rocks, but I didn't get any core shots last winter and I wasn't being extremely careful about rocks. The key to avoiding them is common sense, for the most part. What do you mean by too many park rats? I don't see how people lapping the park affects someone skiing Bis Sky. Unless you just don't like interacting with them, which would make it more of a personal problem.

I really just like hating on big sky.   not for any reason, and park rats are fine by me as well.  but it's still fun to joke about.  big sky is massive, and it's easy to get away from tourists, but they are all still there.  and ticket prices SUCK.  I wouldn't dare go there when I could go to bridger or even moonlight.

and rocks?

c'mon, I made it like 3 turns before I smoked my first rock there.  The entire mountain is sharp pointy rocks.  well, actually only the top, other than that they get good coverage.

I just have fun picking on the most obvious mountain in Montana, when there are so many other hills to go to.

Yeah I can see that but the kid's looking for some serious information so I wanted him to know if you were joking. I would prefer Bridger on a deep pow day with avalanche gear, but no other time than that. Moonlight is just bleh in my opinion. I recommend Big Sky to whoever comes to ski in Bozeman.

i didnt have any real bad core shots. mind you im on moments, which from what i hear have basically indestructible bases. i have one deepish scratch, and its from full on skiing over a boulder like an idiot

yeah dude, i'm giving moment a run this season.  and really I'm just blasting out a lot of stereo types.  at least we're not in fucking colorado.

allthough at the moment I'm in california in the same building as Powder...  How the hell is powder in california?

and yeah, to the thread creator, just come ski montana, it'll change your life.

do it. im not gonna lie, we do have some rocks, and they held up great. as i said, the deep scratch i have is from a day me and pat were traversing to the same line over and over, and i was too lazy one time to take my skis off and hike over the exposed part, so i deserved what i got lol.

Both Big Sky and Bridger have rocks... Ive blown out entire edges (8+ inches) of my skis at both resorts.  You just have to know where your going and that takes a year or so.  Just stick to where it is already tracked and/or ski in the later season.  Wind also has a lot to do with how exposed certain faces are.
