Thats not true. My Windoze box has had top performance since I built the thing. All you have to do is maintain it. Make sure no spyware/adware/malware gets installed. Make sure 10 billion processes aren't running in the backround all the time. Also, make sure to always have the latest drivers. You're pretty much set. My uptime on my Win2k box RIGHT NOW is 43 days 12 hours and 10 minutes... No reboots and my computer runs fast as hell. I'm getting 29fps and a constant 40 ping in SW: Galaxies windowed WHILE replying to this message and I'm running on dated hardware, Athlon XP 1800+/Radeon 9700/512mb DDR.

All you have to do is take care of your computer. Theres a Linux box in the corner of my room which I have running as a fileserver has been up for months without touching it. Barely anyone knows its there! It doesn't even have a monitor attached, or a keyboard/mouse.

ALL OF YOU SHUT UP! i use both mac and pc and there both great computers but for different things! if u are a hardcore gamer go for a pc(even though basiclly every good game is available on mac too). if ure just an average computer user that doesnt know shit and just wants the internet and a typing program along with a family game pack, mac is easier but youll prolly wanna go with a piece of shit dell for that. if your a graphic artist or a huge video editing guy u'll want a mac. if your into music and audio editing and all that again mac. asnd if you are in buisness mac laptops are waaay better but u could manage on a pc i guess.
It really doesnt fucking matter there all great for different things! do u really feel good about yourself winnning a computer argument on the internet? mac are different from pcs it's like comparing a juice box to a bottle though similar in some ways ther just to different to compare. again i use both mac and pc and i like em both together.



p.s. whoever said mac only has one button is a fucking dumbass i bought a new mouse for my mac which was only $14 on sale and it has left click, right click, 2 extra programable buttons and a scroll wheel. plus its one of the most comfortable awesome mouses ive ever used.

^Hehe yeah, maybe if i get the urge to play again. I'm so burnt on that game... I just quit playing a while ago. Probly good cause it eats time. It'd take me forever to get the xp back up though, I don't think I have that kind of free time. I think I was the only master architect on Bria not in a clan.

Put it this way. Both operating systems can do the same thing. Its just personal preference. Neither is BETTER than the other one. Trust me, as someone who has used all 3 major OS's quite a lot. Both Windows and Mac can do the same damn things. They just look different.

Plus... I cant play SWG on a Mac, so what good is that?

One of the reasons Mac's appear to be more stable is that people don't generally write spyware, adware, or viruses for Mac's. The same also goes for Linux. A large majority of viruses on the Internet are made for the Windows operating system. You can make the argument that this is simply to exploit the security holes in XP. But the people writing viruses are generally people who defer radically to things other than Windows within the computer culture.

Another thing to think about is that there is a difference between operating performance and program performance. A poorly written program is going to make your comptuer seem screwy on Windows, Linux, or a Mac.

Obviously part of dealing with bad programs is having a smart OS that can somewhat manage the effects of bad program design. Usually, however, this comes in the form of programming restrictions through an API, and causes performance penalties for error checking and having to use higher level layers to accomplish what you could more easily do through straight machine or assembly coding.

The reason people write viruses, malware, adware, spyware for windows is because the majority of people use windows. If you're looking to reach a large audience you're going to write for windows.

Let's face it, the biggest problem with Macs is their affordability. Most consumers can't get over the price difference, and aren't well educated enough to know that though they're more expensive, a Mac will probably serve them better, and won't crash and get annoying. Andyrightcoast put up a good argument, but let's face it: I want my computer to turn on, do what it's supposed to do, and not crash WITHOUT having to fix security holes and download drivers all the fucking time. If I wanted to be working on computers all day, I'd major in computer science or software engineering.

If I could buy a new computer tomorrow, It'd be an Ibook.

yah my pc sucks.....runs so incredibly slower than it did when i bought it, freezes a lot, etc, etc......my nerd buddy says linux is where it's at (anyone see the linux commercials that are out?) but that linux is worthless unless you know quite a bit about computers, which i don't

I honestly feel that my intelligence is being questioned when I use a Mac. Its like a baby being put in a playpen with shiny toys to play with. Who cares if the GUI is pretty. I'd rather use a command line than OS X

^ Then use the darwin command line within OSX, dude... I do all the time. It's kinda funny that you feel insulted when the thing you're using works properly, efficiently and without any hassle. Doesn't make much sense to me.

About Red Hat 9. The reason for that is because you installed it without development packages and such. If you installed it with all that stuff checked, you wqouldnt have problems.

Now, about the computer. You can't compare it with a girl. A computer is a tool to get things done in the most efficiant way possible. Shiny graphics may be an Oooh and Ahh factor, but when it comes down to it, they mean jack shit to a poweruser. Sure, Ma and Pa Retard will spend time looking at the pretty pictures, but in the end, a simple, non intrusive interface is always the best.

JD May, the fact that you think that you think that Dells are better just makes it that much more abvous that you don't know enough about pcs to say that macs are so much better. Dells MAY be the best common, name brand computer company, but there are plenty of other great smaller PC computer companies. just check out www.cyberpowerinc.com to prove my point!

look at any magazine that has posted a review of the G5. It beat the windows competition by a landslide. And as far as macs being a little more expensive, add up the price of your computer (pc users) and now add up all the shit you had to do when it crashed or sent it in for repairs. I've had my iMac for a year and had no problems. Steve Jobs started the personal computer and now hes back on top again.

All the people argueing about macs are like 'PC's are ugly. Oh, my mac came with a prebundled lcd screen.' Sure, if you buy a prebundled pc, its gonna suck. Dell, gateway, all of those make crappy computers. Get some real computer knowledge and make your own fucking pc. Totally customizable. And if you really care about how fucking good it looks, buy a nice case. Macs are mainly for people who don't know what they're doing. You get a bunch of worthless crap you don't need but with pc's you can choose everything. Motherboard, cpu, graphics card, everything. I'm all about PC's. My school finally switch over most of they're computers to PC's. They're better.

Sure a G5 is the fastest, but if you're paying that much for a computer. IT BETTER be the fastest. I'll still hold that an Athlon64 system running Linux would be the best system to have.

Saying Mac's don't need upgrades is really dumb. What about 3-4 years down the road. As you go on in a PC you can swap parts in and out... It's much harder to upgrade a Mac as you go on like that. PC's are the best bang for your buck.

^ have you ever tried upgrading a mac and compared it to upgrading a pc? then dont talk. I find it easier to upgrade the mac because everything is so neatly put in and easy to find.

I agree that the Athalon64 FX setup with linux would be the best!


also, I just got windows XP Pro and that is just enhancing my support for PCs in this arguement.
I have a really good new computer from Cyber Power INC. They have some really good cases (I got the X-Dreamer in Green) it is a Athalon XP 2600 processor, 80 gig hard drive, ATI Radeon 9600 with 256mb, 512 mb of ram, and Nvidia Nforce2 mobo all for $640! The only reason I didn't have Windows XP come with it is becuase I didn't have them format the hard drive because I wanted to save money. I have to say that site and company are really awsome. You choose EXACTLY what you want for every aspect of the computer and that alone makes it better than a mac. I have it overclocked from 2.08 ghz to 2.25ghz (somthing close to that abyway) and it runs perfectly. (can you overclock a mac, I don't know but I would think not!) It is also cheaper on that site than any name brand pc which makes it a thousand times cheaper than a mac.

^I didn't say dell was the best, I said it was stable, and they have good warrantee programs. But it's nice to see you've decided the company that makes your (fairly lacking) computer is the best one possible. AMD 2600..and you're proud of that... oookkk. To each his own.

By the way, not only are macs JUST as easy to upgrade (except Imacs...w/e), but to the guy who said 'What about 3-4 years down the road', well 3-4 years from now macs still work like the day they were bought. PCs slow down. Quickly.

And I'm sorry you've decided that macs are for people who don't know what they're doing, because even if that were true, it's more than a little sad that you look at a computer and say 'If I use this, I'll look like I'm clueless!' ...how about thinking about how it works?

Anyways I'm done with this thread, because some of you people are just going to keep spouting the same inane bullshit, totaly in denial of 2 basic facts:
1. Apple computers are technologically superior.
2. Apples have greater longevity.

By the way, I use both Apples and PCs consistently, I have several of each for different purposes.

At the end of the day, i suppose its what you are used to. If you've got a pc, and like how it runs and it does everything you want, then there is no need to go for amac. Same other way round too. I have a pc, and have never used a mac, nor do i want to. Why? because i have no need to, my pc does everything i need it to, and does it well. Im sure modern macs are good, but so are modern pc's. So in the end, its down to what your used to and like. Its all good.

^^I'm also gettin a G5 and the good thing about the G5 is (for those who said macs arent easy to upgrade) incredibly easy to upgrade. It fucking plug and play for memory or a new hard drive or anything. i'm biased because i numerous problems with my pc for 3 years and my mac has been great for what i'm doing which is primarily film editing.

i really have to agree with manwiththemetal leg.
'to each his own' is the saying. i personally am a fan of the PC and after building my own i dont think i would have it any other way. im sure the macs are good for a lot of things but until im unsatisifed with my PC, im staying with it.
and to jaros, im running close to the same set up as you with the 2600, very happy and id like to talk to you about cyberpower, those prices are so cheap

Dude, PC's don't slow down with age. Only a 'clogged up' OS causes a PC to slow down and that comes from a shitty user. If you regularly maintain a PC it will be perfectly fine.

See, its not the OS that I'm considering when I choose a PC over a Mac. I could care less what company manufactures the components in my computer. I believe more in the x86 architecture than I do in the PPC architecture, that is all. I'm only running Win2k so I can play Galaxies. If i did not play Galaxies I would be running Gentoo Linux, as I used to. No matter which architecture I had I would be running Linux anyways.

When I can build a brand new PPC pc for under 300 dollars, then I might consider switching. Until then I find it cheaper and easier to build a 300 dollar brand new x86 based PC to throw a finely tuned distro of Gentoo Linux on. That is all.

thats bullshit about the upgrading. my dad has used mac for 15 years in fact his old old old old mac se still works as good as the day he bought it! he boviously doesnt use it anymore but it still fucking works perfectly! we recently got a brand new g4 with duall operating systems since most of his peripherals only run on 9. but it is incredibly easy to upgrade all u do is unplug it pull a lever and the whole side and components slide right out smoothly and then u just pop in your ram and whatever else and plug it back in and bam!
but i still do have some respect for pc's i just hate people saying there a million times better and mac people are idiots. it's like snowboarders saying skiing sucks snowboarding is still cool just not as cool.
