ya its a much more immediate problem to us than the environment, I guess working in slums and saving lives is less appealing to the typical middle class north american... so they turned to environmentalism....

If you read the info about the app, they take into account deaths also, so that is an accurate (if that's the right word) statistic. That IS how fast the world population is growing. Keep in mind though it's hard to get accurate census data so the population number is only a close estimate, probably within a couple million?
