theres only 7 cases in vermont and 2 of them are kids in my town that i went to school with.

swine flu is LESS LETHAL than the common flu. Common flu kills some 45k people a year, swine flu has killed what like 20-40?

There is one confirmed in my county now. I am not really worried. The cure is sprite, crackers, soup and the internet to make the boredom go by quicker.

I think the difference is that lots of people who die each year from influenza are elderly and were nearing the end of their life anyway. swine flu seems to affect much younger people - who normally don't die from the flu.

in saying that though, there don't seem to be many people dying from it in developed countries. I think its only like 10 deaths outside mexico?

a hell of a lot more people get the common flu than swine flue though. if you looked at fatality percentage it wouldn't even be close

H1N1 influenza can undergo reassortment, due to its segmented genome.  Which is why this strain is of interest.  Not only that, but the vaccine issued this year is not effective due to different capsid proteins (the virus looks different).

While it is not very virulent, if it underwent several mutations it could be ultra-virulent.

lets use the 1918 flu epidemic that killed a lot of people.  It killed people our age (15-30 year olds).  This is because it caused a hyperactive reaction of the immune system called a cytokine storm.  The elderly and young were not as severely affected due to the same reason they are usually at high risk for normal flu strains;  the lack of a good immune system. 

When young people die from a flu infection, it is because of the host's immune response, not from the actual infection. 

Work has been done to identify the cause of this mutation, and it has been located as a single amino acid mutation, related to a point mutation in the genome.



The hype around the swine flu was due to preliminary action by the CDC.  They want to flex their muscles and make sure they are doing all they can to control such epidemics. 

So yes, you probably shouldnt worry too much about dying or contracting the swine flu, but the reason for it's popularity is due to inter-government cooperation in practicing disease control on a global scale.

There have been at least 10 cases at my school so far and actually there was one person who was in my art class who had it. The university felt like telling us after he had come back to class and told us that we should not worry because if we would have caught the flu symptoms would have been seen by now.

the regular flu is way more serious as far as I'm concerned. I know it's scary for elders and infants because there isn't technically a vaccination (or maybe there is by now) but it's not even worth mentioning anymore.

there have been 4 or 5 confirmed cases at my brothers high school. but all good so far. yet last year a girl died from the regular flu. hmmmmmmm interesting...

a friend of mine is in quarantine right now, gotta wait for test results to see if it is really bad flu or swine flu but if she is positive she has to be another 7-10 days quarantine. She prescribed to that Tamflu medication except there is a shortage and they will only give it to u if u are confirmed, so she is waiting it out atm dead sick :/
