ok, so i believe im going to purchase a refurbished D60 and im stuck between just the stock lens and the 18-135mm lens.
im relatively new to photography and im getting the D60 so i wont have to upgrade cameras anytime soon just get another lens (if i need to.)
i like taking pictures of pretty much everything. ill mostly stick to skiing, landscape and sometimes macro like flowers.

please dont suggest another camera im 95% sure im getting the D60 its just the lens im worried about. is it worth paying an extra $100 for the better lens?

yes, once you get a nicer lens then the stock kit lens, you dont ever use the kit lens, or thats what alot of people i know say, i skipped and got a 40D with a 28-135 IS USM lens for a steal

If its between the stock lense which is probably 18-55 and 18-135, its a no brianer the 18-135 because of the greater focal range. which means it will zoom farther

not true. lenses with a greater focal length range are of lesser optical quality (as a general principle). The 18-135 will be softer and maybe have more aberration than the 18-55. you have to decide if somewhat better optics or a long extension in range is more valuable to you.

i agree... if the 18-135 had a lower aperture then id say get it, but if you can try to find something with a wider aperture and buy it. but the kit lens is nothing special. if you have a tight budget id say stick with the kit and get a 50mm f/1.8 for low light situations and such (its like $130).

ohhh but the 50mm doesnt autofocus on the d60, thats the only downside

to answer your last question, it is worth it to spend 1200 more on a better lens....glass is where it's at, it makes all the difference, that being said, the longer focal length is all you're paying for, the image quality won't be great
neither lens will be awesome, you should consider spending a little more, i recommend the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as an all around lens, if you're on a tight budget then get the 50mm f/1.8 and for a zoom lens get the nikon equivalent of the canon 70-200 series, not sure what it is
