First Core Shot ever, help needed

I was testing my summer setup for the first time today, 3rd time hitting the rail I come off with this....
I have no idea exactly, but I assume it was a screw a millimeter to far out (I have 2-3 screws on the kicker, but there screwed into a layer of carpet under another layer of carpet). How can I go about fixing this so I can get back to shredding, after the setup is modified of coarse.

I went to the local REI and bought a couple p-tex candles and just got them going by holding them to a candle and dripped them onto my skis. THen scraped off with a metal scraper.

Take a ptex stick or candle and get it lit and burning, holding it over something like a metal scraper so it doesnt drip everywhere. when its got a flame on the end, get it as close to the spot as possible and drip it in, overfilling by a bit. blow the candle out and let the fix sit, the longer the better. when cooled, take your metal scraper or a sharp razor blade, i even use a file sometimes, and shave/scrape the new ptex down to the base level.

With any core shot you'll loose a lot of the bonding strength that the original base material had when the ski was manufactured.  Using drip P-Tex is great for fixing scratches, but when that much core is exposed, you can expect a drip P-Tex job to pop out fairly quickly.

Taking the ski to a shop that has a base-weld gun, or getting a "welding stick" piece of P-Tex and a craft iron that goes up to at least 750° would give you the best results.  Since the core shot isn't near the edge it should be a pretty quick fix.

The only advice I would add to this is to score the core shot area first so that the new dripped p-tex bonds to it better.

umm actually using regular ptex is not recommended for core shots considering it does not have the actual strength of the existing base. there are specific core shot epoxy glue guns that have a mix of ptex and epoxy that will bond to your base for a more permanent fix. the regular ptex may work for a short term fix but dont expect anything permament again. The whole point of the core shot gun is to super heat the matieral around the core shot so when you inject the new matieral into the hole it bonds more effectively with the previously existing base.

As said before, if you're self P-texing, then don't even bother. It WILL fall out, and will not make your skis perform any better. Take it to a shop.

Definitly take that to the shop. I had a core shot about that big on my skis and filled it myself with a p tex candle and it popped out and the core shot ripped to about 3 times the size

BASE WELD IT.

If you fuck around, get water into that core shot, then you can fuck your ski permanently, and rot your wood core.


I've seen it in my shop and felt bad for the guy who took it to a bad tech.

Decent skishop has ptex guns that inject ptex under pressure, obviously this is a much better repair than you DIY ptex candle repair... however if you do it yourself, it wont be bad for the ski, it just might look uglier (since you have black bases it doesnt matter, i have orange bases and my repairs are all decent but oh so ugly) and it might come out after time, but no worries, just ptex it again....

One last tip for using ptex candles, when you drip in the superhot plastic and you think youre done, immediately press your cold metal scraper on the hot ptex, this will thermoshock it+ youll press the ptex in your base, this makes your base harder and denser where you ptexed....

have fun! coreshots arent that bad at all, just get it repaired as soon as possible...
