going to school at university of utah next yeah and looking for a mountain bike for cruising trails and around campus in the price range of $500-1000

If you're gonna be keeping it on campus, make sure you can keep it inside your dorm. Some places have rules about it, and you definitely don't want to be leaving a rockhopper outside, or any bike for that matter.

For that price, you won't find any decent full sus.  Go for a hardtail, you could get a pretty nice setup at the upper end of that price range. 

Hoodslayer's got it.  The hardrock is just about the best deal for your money, and it'll last forever.  I've seen one take gnarlier crashes than anyone should ever have to witness.  While parts come and go, the frame should last you for a long, long, long time.

However, the tires that come stock on the rockhopper are perfectly fine, and I wouldn't get new ones until those die.

When that happens, I'd reccomend slightly more mountain-oriented tires than he did.  Go for kenda small block 8's

although they'll cost you about $35 each, they are well worth it.

By the way, that website is legit, so feel free to buy from there.  I haven't personally, but I know many people who have had happy endings in buying bike stuff from there.

check out like a canondale f4 or something in the f series.  they are good entry level bikes, great quality,  and reasonably priced

Yeah ill be living in Chapel Glen and i believe that have inside bike storage and you can keep them in your room if your really want.

yo start looking real hard for any used bike deals were the bike was lightly used
i got nice pro specialized enduro for 1100 only 300 miles on it

honestly you can't really find a good mountain bike for 500 to 1000. You could get an OK hardtail or a not so great used fully. try pinkbike.com your best bet is to get a used bike and that site is pretty trustworthy.

How tall are you/how much do you weigh?  What kind of riding do you want to do?  How much will you be riding on trails vs. concrete?

Also, I have two bikes for sale if you're interested.  If your response to the above fits my bikes descriptions i'll post 'em.  I'm selling them right in your price range too and they're dope ass bikes.  Don't want to give them up, I just need some moneyz.

Never mind my bikes are wayy to small for you.  If you want a good bike for new that can take a beating and can handle pretty much any type of riding I'd go wtih a Giant STP.  You can get the nicer one for under $1000 since it's a hardtail.  I used to have one but it got jacked.  Best all-round bike I've ever ridden.
