More homework help...does intent matter?

so i have to write my 4th in class English essay tomorrow, and i know that some ns'ers have some pretty good opinions on stuff.... so if you could come up with some quick smart sounding notes on "Does intent matter" then that would be great

for example, some guy built a nuculer power plant to help power the city, but it blew up because some guy messed and it killed a whole bunch of people, does the intent to help matter?

I mean most people say its the thought that counts. I have to agree. If you are doing something to help people and it backfires people are gonna see it both ways. Some people are just gonna see that they blew the world up, or whatever they did wrong, but others are gonna see the good side of it, see the way that they were helping people, see the good that they were trying to do.

honestly thought i wouldnt choose such a complex topic, unless you believe you can do it

i would choose somethign that is life applicable, like if i was to do this, id write about how i got 99 problems and bitches are all but 1, and id explain how texting has neutralized the world so that no matter what you say it comes across in a standard bland mood, that cannot be portrayed like a phone call or face to face, and how it creates more problems then it solves

obviously intent matters. If someone kills his friend accidently in a firing range accident it is considered an accident and the person is usually let go. (Bad example I know)

However the problem lies in the fact wether or not the person actually had not intended for something horrible to happen. Being able to find out this certain truth is the key to your problem.

In the end result intent doesn't matter at all. Intent is the difference between an accident and a murder but the victim is dead anyway.

I believe that Immanuel Kant (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) thought that the intent behind someone's actions is the only thing that really matters.  For example, if someone murders someone in order to save 2 people's lives, then the murderer's actions are justified.
