Linux Programs?

so my windows xp media center totally pooped out. and i couldnt even format my hdd. i tried reinstalling xp with only a fail and some iStor.sys missing file. so now im running linux ubunto 9.04 or something right off of a cd which im fine with for now. but, installing programs is such a bitch, i downloaded wine but now i dont know how to proceed from there. anyone know of some video editing software or audio editing or something?

Applications (i think) - all the way to teh bottom at "Add-Remove", then check what ever you want.

or there's synaptic, but thats more complicated.

buuttt I dont really know how that will work since your running it off of a cd.

and there isn't really anything on linux video editing wise on par with premiere or final cut unfortunately.

Do you know how to get to the Application Download program?  I used Kubuntu (KDE instead of Gnome) for a while, and there was a program where you could download almost every Linux program you could imagine.  I'm sure Ubuntu has a similar system.

ah damn, Kino video editor wont recognize my camera to capture. i read something about linux only being compatible with a few firewire ports, guess i dont have one of them..
