you sir definitely know what you are talking about. i have a beared dragon and imo think hes the best pet you could ever have. they are so chill, and mine i basicly can control exactly what i want him to do. for example, if i want tim to eat alot, poop (which they only do once a week, very nice), run around, and have cool colors, all i have to do is get him really warm. which just means taking him outside or putting him under his light. this is because they are cold blooded, so the warmer they are the more active they are.
when they are room temp they will chill with you forever, and its just so sick because mine will stay on my sholder for like half an hour and not do a thing. also, they come in lots of different colors which makes them look even cooler, but also can change from light to dark, and thier beard to total black when they want. thier dont have any way to defend them selfs exept stay still, and will lick everything, hence are totally harmless. i give mine colored greens ever day and worms or crickets every few days.
i really hope this helps people deside to get one, they need more legit owners that arent 5 year olds that leave them to dye. also, as you said, birds are also really sick, and i would have gotten on instead if i was allawed. look at the parakets, basicly small parets and are supposed to be super down and chill. lastly, sorry for spelling, really not feeling editing this!
