Insane- Dan Osman speed climbing w/o ropes (poss repost)

Alot of you have probably seen this already but whatever, its summer and I know at least a couple kids will be stoked to see it.

I did a report on this guy back in college, he was a nut. Unfortunately he died (no he wasn't climbing, he was doing something similar to bungee jumping when his equipment failed)

Go to 1:11 to see the sickest dyno in the history of climbing. Also, if this video makes your hands sweat, leave a comment saying so, haha.

that was a cool video i hadnt seen it and really impressive such good athleticism. i was thinking how pathetic it is that there are probablly a ton of people who couldnt walk up a 400 set of stairs in the time he just climbed 400 ft.

also that slackline vid was badass. i see people doing that on campus all the time and even tried it a bit myself. its fun and once you have it down solid doing it over a huge cliff wouldnt make it any harder. but jeez that dude must have the biggest balls and like what a sweet rush im sure he got doing that. so cool and the music was perfect

That was ridiculous.  Just one mistake and your life is over.  One slip, and you are done.  Where do you get the guts to do that.  Same goes for the slackline video.  Shit.  One mistake and it's lights out.  It's cool he made it to the middle, but now you have to go back.  haha.  I'm sure he had a different way to get back, or he climbed down that "island" rock.  Amazing.  Thanks for posting that.

not to be insensitive, but he was just pointing out the irony that he didnt rely on ropes during his climbing, and the one time he did he died.

I'm going to give steve the benefit of the doubt and say he wasn't trying to mock or make fun at Dan's death.

dude, you already know he didnt die free climbing, so there is no point in even mentioning that part of his life. "Reasonable calculated risks" don't really exist in these type of feats, as both were pioneers in what they were doing. They both decided to do something dangerous and unpredictable, they both jumped off a cliff, both deaths were the result of equipment failure, they both left families behind. Not seeing much of a difference here.

They did inspect them, and they worked fine the day before.
I'm not saying that Dan Osman didn't take ridiculous and selfish risks, I'm simply saying that Shane did the exact same thing. You can say that Shane made "reasonable calculations" or whatever, but he still died doing something completely unnecessary, just like Dan.

I understand the point you're trying to make. But no one can argue the subtle similarities and differences between how Dan and Shane died. None of us have experience with rope jumping or base jumping so arguing whether or not he was taking a calculated risk or not is purposeless.

We take a calculated risk everytime we go skiing.  You might not consider freeskiing a death risk.  But almost every year you hear about someone who died skiing while doing something thats hardly insane.  Look at that girl that died on the bunny slope this past season.  And theres been a few other kids who have died freeskiing these past few years. RIP

I understand that every day I could go skiing could be my last day living.  But hell, getting in a car, even walking to the store could be your last moment alive.  I don't NEED to freeski, but I do.  Some people say that it is crazy.  But to me I couldn't imagine not skiing.

I'm sure its the same for Shane and the rock climbing guy (also RIP).  They definitly understood that they could die any day and leave their families behind.  I'm sure Shane's wife understood that too.  He knew this, but he still did it because its something he could just not live without.

Its terribly said for these people to die, but I don't think they were necessarily selfish or stupid.

like I said, they inspected them, and used them the day before he died. Its not like he just rolled up after a month, strapped in, and died on the first jump.

This thread went to shit but thats still a sick video no matter what people think about Dan Osman as a person.
