Canon, Panasonic, or Sony

I'm getting an HD Camcorder, someone who knows camcorders PLEASE steer me towards a good one

Main Use: recording backcountry/park skiing & lifestyle edits
Willing to spend: At most $1000

I've been doing a lot of research cuz i want to get the best for my money. I've found these three that I think are of similar quality but different companies. But im open for any other suggestions. Thanks NS

hv30

excellent image quality, amazing price, decent manual controls. Not worth the upgrade to the hv40 practically the exact same camera with minor changes for quite a bit more money.

i own an hv20, and can say it is an amazing camera, especially for the price. i cannot say that i have owned the other two, but i have done a ton of research into them and found a few cool things out.
canons colors are arguably much better than most of the higher end panasonic and sony cams out there, and its auto features are much better ( in most cases) heres a video to show what i mean

sony has a cool feature with slow mo. you just select it while filming and you can shoot up to 240 fps i think is?
and panasonic im not sure what is better about it, other than i have seen some great stuff shot on it.

but for your money id go with an HV30, they have amazing colours, lots of cool manual features, and hey, they are really cheap

also you can check out reviews on google, just type in hv30 vs. sr-7 or w.e you want to compare, or look at vimeo. tons of great places.

panasonic deffinatly because it has a 3cmos instead of one. meaning much better colors. Im sure it has similar manny controls as the hv30 as well.

thanks for the input man! I'm leaning towards the Canon. I went to PC Richards today and in stock they had the HG20 for $600 and they told me the HV20 has been discontinued. If I can find the HV30 online for a reasonable price I think I'll jump on that.

If its too good to be true then it is. Only buy from b&h and selected other legit websites. Be very careful buying expensive video and photo equipment online.

sorry for threadjack, but if i were to buy a hv30, would i be in trouble without a firewire port? my macbook dosent have one im pretty sure, so would i have trouble getting footage on my comp? thanks

Waaaaaaaaait a minute. An hv30 can work with USB? Sheesh i thought it couldnt. maby i'll get one cus i can deal with painfully slow.

you need a firewire for the hv30, you can only use the usb to transfer images from the miniSD card

Be careful with that. We used to use Sony V1U's (3CMOS HDV cam) and they had that feature on it too, but is not even usable quality. I believe it records at 320x180 when it does that.
Just want to throw that out there.

I have a few friends who shoot with Panasonic HVX's and they like them a lot. If you got the skrilla buy that camera because it is fucking sick.

One should only buy a HVX if one has the skill to possess it. I found that out the hard way and luckly had a lot of help on the way. I would have been fucked if i didn't get outside help, shit is confusing and really hard to learn, if you're looking at cameras like these then you should stray away from high end cameras because you're probably not ready.

ive never seen good colors from a one chip camera. I have a small 3chip panasonic and it works great. destroys any single chip ive ever seen. May not be as good as a larger 3 chip camcorder but better than single imo
