That technique implies that you use an instrumental of the track and the normal version (vocals + instru). You then reverse the soundwaves of the instru (kinda make a negative of it) and add it to the normal track (vocals + instru). The "negative" instrumental will subract the sound from the normal version of the track you have, and the only sound you'll get will be the vocals. I highly suggest that you watch tutorials.

You'll need a program like Adobe Audition to do that.

There's good advice in here so far.

If you want to get the instrumental or acapella, then by the vinyl. Alot of times vinyls have seperate insturmental / vocal tracks included so that way DJ's can mix it.

If you don't have a turn table set up, then go to the acapella site suggested, or search limewire/torrentz.

Yes, you can use audio software to try and inverse the wav channels and snag the vocal track or cancel it out.. but it's not even worth your time.The final result is gonna be shitty, because no matter how good you are.. it's not gonna be exact. Alot of final radio mixes have gone through post production / mixing and mastering, which throws everything off if you try to invert the track.

What'll happen is you'll get an acapella with hihats, noise, and all kinds of garbage.. and if you are just trying to grab the beat, then you'll cancel out alot of the channels that you don't want to.


If you are looking to just get the instrumental beat.. well then you can listen through the whole song.. Hope that there's a good 4-5 second spot without vocals on it and loop it. Otherwise, no love ;p

ahha i thought i was way off about what a 12" was

ok here we go, its not to complicated but im not going to elaborate much so hopefully you can follow.
if you have the instrumental or the acapella for a song, you can use it to "extract" the other. lets say you have the instrumental for a track and want the acapella-  open up the original track and also the instrumental track. you need to get the waveforms to line up perfectly with each other, there are many ways you can do this i dont have time to explain you can figure it out on your own. using your audio editing software line up the waveforms for both tracks as precisely as possible, then select one of the tracks and invert it. you can invert either one and get the same result. since you have the instrumental and the original track cued with one of them inverted, you basically have 2 tracks playing the instrumental and 1 playing the vocals. the instrumental tracks will cancel each other out since one of them is inverted leaving only the vocals to be heard. this will only work if the waveforms are lined up perfectly, the worse they are lined up the worse your acapella will be. good luck figuring this out maybe ill elaborate later on if i have the time.
